Filed for VEC unemployment benefits online - no response yet. How long until I hear back?
I filed for unemployment benefits online a few days ago and haven't heard anything back yet. Has anyone else experienced this? How long does it usually take to get an update on your claim status? I'm getting worried because I really need this money soon.

Welcome to the club, buddy. I filed 3 weeks ago and still crickets. The VEC is a black hole where claims go to die 💀

3 weeks? You're still a newbie. Try 2 months with no update. This system is beyond broken.

6 weeks?! Some of us cant afford to wait that long. Bills don't pay themselves 🙄

Here's what you need to do: 1. Keep checking your online account daily 2. Make sure you file your weekly claim every week, even if you haven't heard back about your initial claim 3. Double-check that you entered all your information correctly 4. If you don't hear anything after 2 weeks, try calling them (good luck with that tho) 5. Consider reaching out to your local delegate or senator if it goes on too long Hang in there, the system is overwhelmed but they'll get to you eventually!

This is solid advice. I'd add: document EVERYTHING. Every call, every letter, every online interaction. You might need it later.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/GK1CFuX4p2k

Sounds sketchy. Why should we have to pay to talk to VEC? That's ridiculous.

Idk man, $20 to save hours of frustration? Might be worth it. How long did you wait?

I get the skepticism, but it saved me days of trying. I was connected in about 2 hours. Way better than constantly redialing.

Does it actually work tho? Like, did you get your issue resolved?

Yeah, it worked for me. Got my claim sorted out. The agent I spoke to was actually helpful once I got through.

Pro tip: if you're having trouble online, try filing by phone. Sometimes the systems don't sync up and phone claims can go through faster. Worked for me!

Anybody else notice that the VEC website is always "under maintenance" when you actually need to use it? 🙄 It's like they're trying to make this as difficult as possible.

PREACH 👏 I swear they do it on purpose to discourage people from filing

Tinfoil hat much? It's probably just old tech that can't handle the volume.

Old tech or not, it's 2024. They need to get it together.

Has anyone tried contacting their state representative about this? I've heard some people have had success getting their claims pushed through that way.

I did! My delegate's office was actually super helpful. They can't work miracles, but they did get me some answers.

How do you even find out who your state rep is?

Just Google "Find my Virginia state representative" - there are websites where you can enter your address and it'll tell you.

LPT: Set up direct deposit as soon as you can. Once your claim is approved, it's way faster than waiting for a debit card in the mail.

This! I made the mistake of not doing this and had to wait an extra week for that stupid card.
