When does SSA send Form 1099 for 2024? Mine always arrived in December before

I've been receiving Social Security retirement benefits for 6 years now and I've always gotten my SSA-1099 form in December of each year. It's now mid-January 2025 and I still don't have mine. Has the SSA changed their schedule for sending these out? I need it for my taxes and my accountant is already asking for all my documents. Should I be worried that something's wrong with my account? Anyone else still waiting for theirs?

The SSA-1099 forms are actually supposed to be sent by January 31st, not in December. You've been lucky in previous years to get them early! According to the official SSA timeline, they mail these forms out in batches throughout January, so many people don't receive them until mid to late January. If you don't have yours by February 1st, then you should follow up with SSA.

Thanks for this info! I guess I was confused because I always seemed to get mine in December. I'll wait a couple more weeks before I start worrying.

I NEVER get mine until the last week of January. Every. Single. Year. And I've been collecting SS for 12 years!!! The SSA is ALWAYS slow with these things. Don't expect any government agency to be efficient LOL. One year I didn't get mine until February 10th and had to call them 5 TIMES before they resent it.

You can actually download your SSA-1099 online if you have a my Social Security account. Log in at ssa.gov and look under the "Replacement Documents" section. The online 1099s are typically available by mid-January, sometimes before the paper copies are mailed out. This is much faster than waiting for mail delivery.

I tried logging into my account but it says my password is expired. When I try to reset it, the system keeps timing out. Very frustrating!

I had the exact same issue with my online account! After trying for days to get through on the phone, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to a real SSA agent in about 15 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU. The agent helped me reset my account and I was able to download my 1099 right away instead of waiting for the mail. Definitely worth it when you need to talk to someone at SSA quickly.

My neighbor works for the IRS and he told me that they don't even start processing tax returns until February 15th anyway, so don't stress about it. As long as you get your 1099 by early February, you're fine.

That's not entirely accurate. The IRS typically begins accepting returns in late January. For 2025 taxes (2024 tax year), they'll likely start processing returns around January 27-29th. It's true they may hold refunds for certain credits, but regular processing starts much earlier than February 15th.

No, I've been at the same address for 12 years. That's why I was concerned something might be wrong with my account.

u can also get transcript of the 1099 info from irs website if u have account there. sometimes easier than dealing with ssa website

The IRS transcript DOESN'T show all the same details as the actual SSA-1099 form!!! My tax preparer said he needs the ACTUAL FORM, not just the numbers from the transcript. Don't spread misinformation!!!

I've been getting Social Security disability for about 8 years now, and I've noticed they seem to send them out in batches based on your Social Security number. People with numbers ending in certain digits get theirs first. My husband and I almost always get ours about 10 days apart even though we're at the same address. Maybe your SSN just puts you in a later batch this year?

That's interesting! I never realized they might send them in batches by SSN. That could explain why mine came earlier in previous years.
