Social Security tax statements (SSA-1099) still not received - April filing deadline approaching
Has anyone else still not received their SSA-1099 for 2024 tax filing? My husband and I both collect retirement benefits, and neither of us has gotten our statements yet. It's already mid-March and we're trying to get our taxes done before the April deadline! We've always received them by mid-January in previous years. I tried checking the MySocialSecurity portal, but neither of our 1099s are available to download there either. I've tried calling SSA three times but can't get through - just disconnected after waiting 45+ minutes each time. Anyone else experiencing delays this year or know what's going on? Getting worried about filing on time!

•Have you been able to reach anyone at SSA? I'm wondering if I should just go to my local office at this point.

Yes, there's definitely a widespread delay this year. According to the SSA website, they had some printing and distribution issues with the 1099s. You have three options: 1. Keep checking your mySocialSecurity account online - they're uploading them in batches 2. Request a replacement through the online portal (this might trigger faster processing) 3. Call the dedicated 1099 request line at 1-800-772-1213 (though as you've experienced, wait times are extreme) Remember, you can always file for an extension if needed. Form 4868 gives you until October 15th to file.

•This is RIDICULOUS!! This is the 3rd year in a row with 1099 problems. I got mine late January but my wife's still hasn't arrived. When I went to the local office they just told me to "keep waiting" or "check online" - USELESS!!! The government expects us to file on time but can't even send the forms we need?!?

•I mentioned in my post that I checked online and they're not available there either. Have you been able to see yours online?

I was having the same issue and spent WEEKS trying to get through to anyone at Social Security with no luck. After getting disconnected multiple times, I found a service called Claimyr that got me connected to a real SSA agent in about 20 minutes. They have this system that holds your place in line and calls you back when an agent is available. I was skeptical but desperate and it actually worked! The agent was able to send me replacement 1099s right away. Check out their video here if you want to see how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU or their website claimyr.com

•Did that service cost money? I'm already annoyed that I might have to file an extension because SSA can't get their act together. Not sure I want to pay for something that should be provided as a basic service.

If you don't want to wait, here's a practical workaround: your December 2024 bank statement should show your deposit amount, and you can calculate the annual total by multiplying by 12 (or however many months you received benefits). If your benefit amount changed during the year, you'll need to account for that. Another option: if you received a COLA notice in December 2023, it usually shows your total benefits for the past year and the coming year's monthly amount. Most tax software allows you to enter this information manually without needing the actual 1099-SSA form. The IRS computers will match it up on their end.

•That's really helpful, thank you! My husband's benefit did change when he turned 67 in August, so I'd need to calculate each period separately. I didn't know the tax software would allow manual entry - that's good to know. I might try the replacement request online first and see if that triggers them to process ours.

•Your tax preparer is being overly cautious. The IRS doesn't require you to attach the actual SSA-1099 to your return. You just need to report the correct amount of benefits received and taxes withheld (if any). If you can calculate your total benefits accurately from bank statements, you can absolutely file without the physical form.

This happens LITERALLY every year! The SSA is the most dysfunctional agency in government. Last year they sent my 1099 to my old address even though I had updated my information TWICE with them. The year before they had the wrong SSN printed on my form!!! I've learned to just file an extension automatically every year because something always goes wrong with these forms. And yes, I'm still waiting for mine this year too.

Update: I took the advice about requesting a replacement through the online portal, and it worked! Both our 1099s were available to download within 48 hours of making the request. For anyone else still waiting, definitely try the replacement request option instead of just checking for the original. Thanks everyone for your help!
