Still haven't received my Social Security 1099-SSA for taxes - SSA website says 'currently being mailed'
Has anyone received their Social Security 1099 forms yet? I usually get mine by mid-January, but it's already February and nothing in my mailbox! When I checked the MySocialSecurity website, it just says they're 'currently being mailed.' I need to file my taxes soon and my accountant is asking for this form. Anyone else still waiting? Is there a specific date when they're supposed to finish mailing them all out? Getting a bit anxious since I had some benefit changes last year and really need to verify the numbers.

•It's a physical form that comes in the mail, not an email... so no spam folder to check unfortunately.

The SSA is required to mail all 1099-SSA forms by January 31st, but they often run behind schedule. You can actually download and print your 1099-SSA directly from your MySocialSecurity account instead of waiting for the mail. Just log in, go to the 'Replacement Documents' section, and you should see an option to get your tax forms. The online version is identical to what you'd receive in the mail and is perfectly acceptable for tax filing purposes.

•Thank you! I tried looking in my online account but couldn't find that section. I'll look again - maybe I missed it. Really appreciate the help!

•I had the SAME EXACT PROBLEM last year and ended up waiting until mid-February for nothing!!! Then I called SSA and they told me my address wasn't updated in their system even though I had moved TWO YEARS before and had been receiving my benefits at the new address!!! Their systems don't talk to each other apparently. So frustrating!!

My brother and I both get SS, he got his form last week but I'm still waiting. Always seems random when they arrive. Not sure why some go out before others.

•The SSA typically sends out 1099-SSA forms in batches based on geographic regions and alphabetical order of last names. That's why family members sometimes receive them at different times. If you don't receive yours by February 15th, I'd recommend calling the SSA directly or requesting a replacement through your online account.

I waited 3 weeks for mine and finally gave up and called SSA. Got disconnected twice, then waited on hold for 2.5 hours! Finally used this service called Claimyr that got me through to an agent in about 20 minutes. They made a request to mail me a replacement form, which arrived 4 days later. You can check them out at claimyr.com - there's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU. Saved me a lot of frustration!

•That actually sounds useful. I've been calling for THREE DAYS trying to get through to someone about my missing 1099. I'm going to check this out because tax deadline isn't getting any further away and my CPA is getting annoyed with me for the delay.

This is SO TYPICAL of the SSA!!! They expect us to file our taxes on time but can't even get their forms out when they're supposed to! I had to file for an extension last year because of this exact issue. The worst part is that the IRS doesn't care that it's not your fault - they'll still charge penalties if you file late! I ended up having to print mine from my online account, but the numbers were wrong and had to be corrected anyway. The whole system is broken!!!

•While it can be frustrating, you can avoid these issues by downloading your 1099-SSA directly from your MySocialSecurity account. If you notice any discrepancies in the amounts, you should call the SSA immediately to request a correction. And if you're having trouble accessing your online account, you can visit your local SSA office with proper identification to get a printed copy in person.

•I had wrong numbers on mine once too. They counted some back pay from the previous year in the wrong tax year. Took months to fix.

I work with a lot of seniors on their taxes, and this is a common issue every year. A few important points: 1. The SSA is required to mail them by January 31st, but they don't always meet this deadline 2. You can print an official copy from your MySocialSecurity account under "Replacement Documents" > "Get a 1099" 3. If you don't have an online account, call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 4. Local SSA offices can print your 1099-SSA on the spot if you visit in person 5. The form is officially called the SSA-1099 (different from regular 1099s) If you're claiming Social Security benefits, the IRS requires this information, so don't file without it. Hope this helps!

•This is super helpful! I just logged in again and found the replacement documents section. Got my 1099 printed out now! You saved me a lot of worry.

my neighbor said they sending them late this year cuz of the cola increase? had to recalculate everything or something

•That's not accurate. The 2023 COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment) of 8.7% was already calculated and implemented in January 2023, so it wouldn't affect the timing of the 2023 tax forms being sent in January 2024. The SSA typically mails all forms by January 31st, though individual delivery times vary.

I had this problem every year until I finally created my MySocialSecurity account online. Now I just download the PDF version and give it to my tax preparer. Much easier than waiting for the mail! The SSA customer service rep told me they mail them out in batches throughout January, and some don't go out until early February. But the online version is available by January 31st for everyone.

•Thanks for this tip! I was able to log in and download mine. Wish I'd known about this years ago - would have saved me a lot of stress waiting by the mailbox!
