When can I access my Social Security 1099 form online for tax season?
I need to file my taxes soon and I'm trying to find my Social Security 1099 form. Does anyone know when these become available on the MySocialSecurity website? I logged in yesterday but couldn't find it anywhere. Is there a specific date when they upload the new forms each year? This is my first year filing taxes with SS benefits and I don't want to miss any deadlines.

SSA makes the 1099s available online by the end of January each year. You can access yours by logging into your MySocialSecurity account, going to the "Message Center" section, and then looking under "Tax Information". If you don't see it yet, give it until February 1st before getting worried. They're usually very reliable about having them ready before the IRS even starts accepting returns.

•Thank you! I'll check the Message Center. I was only looking under the Benefits section. Do they also mail paper copies or is it only available online now?

Does anyone know if the SSA website will show previous years' 1099s too? I accidentally threw away my 2023 form and now I'm paranoid I might need it for some reason even though I already filed last year's taxes. When I finally find where they keep the current form I want to see if I can get the old one too. I HATE tax season so much!!

•Yes, your MySocialSecurity account should show 1099s for multiple previous years. When you go to the Tax Information section, you'll usually see a dropdown menu where you can select different tax years. Most accounts show at least 3-5 years of history.

I NEVER could get the stupid online account to work for me!! Been trying for 2 years and they always say my information doesn't match their records. I think because I moved 3 times in 2 years. So I have to wait for paper copies of EVERYTHING and sometimes they get lost in the mail. Last year I had to go to the SS office in person to get a copy of my 1099.

•I had the same issue with my account after moving. Have you tried using Claimyr to reach an SSA agent by phone? I used it last week when I couldn't access my account and they were able to verify my identity and fix the issue in one call. It saved me from driving to the office. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU - much better than waiting on hold for hours or dealing with the busy signals.

Just to add some detail to what others have said - the SSA Form 1099 (officially called the SSA-1099 or Benefit Statement) is typically available in your online account by January 31st. If you're receiving SSDI or retirement benefits, you'll get the SSA-1099. If you receive SSI, you won't get a 1099 because SSI is not taxable. When you log in to your account, click on "My Home" and then look for "Message Center" near the bottom of the page. The tax forms should be in there. They do still mail paper copies, but those usually arrive in early February.

•Thank you for the detailed instructions! I found it exactly where you said. I didn't realize SSI doesn't get 1099s - I'm on retirement benefits so I needed one. Really appreciate the help!

Has anyone else noticed that sometimes the amounts on the 1099 don't match what you actually got? My dad swears he got $245 more than what his form says. Do they take taxes out before listing the total?

•The SSA-1099 shows the total benefits paid before any deductions. What your father might be seeing is the difference between gross benefits and net benefits after deductions like Medicare premiums, tax withholding, or other adjustments. Box 3 shows the total benefits, while Box 4 shows benefits repaid. The difference (Box 5) is what's reported to the IRS as taxable. He should compare his bank deposits to the monthly benefit amounts after deductions, not to the gross amount on the 1099.

I just wanted to update - I found my 1099 today! It wasn't there yesterday but showed up this morning. So I guess they're still uploading them. Anyway if anyone else is still waiting just keep checking.
