Missing 2024 SSA-1099 for December Social Security payment - when will it appear?

My husband just started receiving Social Security retirement benefits and got his first payment on December 31, 2024. I'm trying to help him prepare our taxes, but I can't find his SSA-1099 form anywhere. I've looked all over the mySocialSecurity portal and don't see any link or option to view/download it. Nothing has come in the mail either. Since he only received one payment in 2024, would he even get a 1099 for that year? If so, when are they typically available online? I'm not sure if we should keep waiting or if there's somewhere specific I need to look. Any help would be appreciated!

SSA-1099s for 2024 are typically available by the end of January 2025, but they're sometimes delayed until early February. Since your husband only received one payment in December 2024, he should still receive a 1099 for that amount. On the mySocialSecurity portal, look under the "Replacement Documents" section - that's where they appear once posted. The SSA sends these out automatically, but they prioritize beneficiaries who've been receiving payments all year, so newer recipients sometimes get theirs a bit later.

Thank you! I checked under Replacement Documents but didn't see anything there yet. I guess we'll need to be patient and check back in early February. Do you know if they'll mail a paper copy too, or just make it available online?

That's reassuring to hear. I was starting to worry that maybe they don't issue them for just one month of payments. We'll keep an eye out around mid-February then. Thanks!

The SSA is completely overwhelmed right now with all the new retirees. I had to wait FOREVER to get my 1099 when I started back in 2023. Called SSA about ten times and could never get through to a real person. Kept getting disconnected or was on hold for hours. Absolutely maddening when you're trying to file your taxes on time! They really need to hire more people or fix their phone systems.

I had the same frustration trying to get through to SSA about a 1099 issue last year. Finally used a service called Claimyr that got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of waiting for hours. Saved me so much stress! You can see how it works at claimyr.com or watch their demo video: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU - it basically holds your place in line so you don't have to stay on hold forever. The agent I spoke with confirmed that 1099s for December-only beneficiaries do get processed but are often in the last batch.

Technically your husband's December benefit might actually be considered a January 2025 payment for tax purposes, depending on the exact timing. Social Security benefits are paid in the month following the month for which they are due. So a December 31 payment could actually be for January 2025, in which case it would appear on NEXT year's 1099. Check the payment description in his mySocialSecurity account to confirm which month that payment was actually for.

I just checked and it definitely says "December 2024 benefit payment" in his account. So I guess we do need the 2024 1099 after all. This is all new to us!

In that case, yes, you'll need the 2024 1099. And since it was deposited in 2024, it counts for 2024 taxes regardless. The SSA has until January 31st to make these available by law, but as others have mentioned, they often run behind for new beneficiaries. If it's not available by mid-February, I would recommend calling them.

Is anyone else having MAJOR ISSUES with the mySocialSecurity site lately?? It keeps logging me out while I'm trying to access documents. The whole system seems broken. I've been trying for DAYS to get my husband's 1099 and it's just a nightmare!!!

Just to clarify for everyone - the SSA is required by law to issue a Form SSA-1099 (or SSA-1042S for nonresident aliens) to each beneficiary who received Social Security benefits during the previous calendar year. Even if your husband only received one payment in December 2024, he will get a 1099 for tax year 2024. The official deadline is January 31st, but new beneficiaries often have to wait a bit longer. If you don't see it by February 15th, then I would recommend contacting SSA directly.

Thank you so much for the specific information! We'll wait until mid-February before taking any further action. It's our first time dealing with Social Security benefits, so we're still learning how everything works.

btw if u really need the info before the 1099 comes u can calculate it yourself... just look at the deposit amount in his bank account, that's what my tax guy told us to do last year when we were in the same boat

While you can use the payment amount as an estimate, I would caution against filing taxes using only the bank deposit information. The SSA-1099 might include other adjustments or withholdings that aren't obvious from the payment amount alone. It's best to wait for the official form to ensure accuracy.

Good point - we're not in a huge rush, so I think we'll wait for the official form. Just wanted to make sure we weren't missing something obvious. Thanks everyone for all the helpful information!
