Social Security 1099 Form missing from mail delivery - how to get one for tax filing?

I'm frustrated because I didn't receive my Social Security 1099 form in the mail this year. I need it for filing taxes! I checked my mailbox repeatedly throughout January but nothing came. My husband didn't receive his either which makes me think something's wrong. I've already downloaded mine from my online Social Security account (finally figured that out after an hour), but my husband doesn't have an online account set up. Anyone else missing their 1099 forms? Is this happening to lots of people? Does SSA have a problem with mailing them this year? What's the fastest way for my husband to get his 1099 without creating an online account? Tax deadline is approaching and we need this document!

This has been a widespread issue this year. SSA had some mailing delays with the 1099-SSA forms. You did the right thing by downloading yours online. For your husband, he has three options: 1) Create his own my Social Security account (fastest), 2) Call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 to request a replacement (expect long wait times), or 3) Visit a local SSA office in person (appointment recommended). If you need it urgently, option 1 is definitely best.

Thank you! He's pretty reluctant about creating online accounts - always worried about security. I tried convincing him to set one up. Maybe the tax deadline will motivate him! How long does it typically take to get the 1099 if we call and request it?

same thing happened to me!! neither me or my wife got ours in the mail. i had to go to the social security office and wait for 3 HOURS to get a copy. its ridiculous. they said something about a mailing issue affecting "certain regions" whatever that means

The mailing issues aren't actually SSA's fault this time. It's related to USPS regional distribution center problems. I work with seniors on tax prep and about 30% of my clients didn't receive their 1099-SSA forms this year. SSA is aware of the problem but their solution is basically "just download it online" which doesn't help people without internet access or computer skills.

I had the exact same problem! If your husband calls, be prepared for a LONG wait. I spent almost 2 hours on hold last week trying to get mine. If he's not tech-savvy, you might want to help him create an account. It's honestly not that complicated and the website security is actually pretty good.

2 HOURS?! That's crazy. I'm going to try harder to convince him to create an account. We're filing jointly so we really need his 1099 soon. Did they give you any estimate of when they'd mail a new one after you called?

They told me 5-7 business days but it's been 8 days now and still nothing in my mailbox. I ended up creating an online account anyway just to get it done with.

Don't waste your time calling SSA directly. I tried calling over and over for two weeks and couldn't get through to anyone. The wait times are crazy this time of year. I found this service called Claimyr that got me connected to a real SSA agent in about 25 minutes instead of waiting for hours. Check out their demo video: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU - their website is claimyr.com. They basically call SSA for you and connect you when an agent is on the line. Saved me a ton of frustration.

I've used Claimyr before too when I needed to sort out an underpayment issue. It definitely works to get through to SSA faster. That said, for something like a 1099 replacement, creating a my Social Security account is still going to be your fastest solution. It literally takes about 10 minutes to set up an account, and then you can instantly download the 1099 form. If your husband is concerned about security, SSA's website uses the same level of encryption as banking websites.

Thanks both of you! I'll look into that service if we can't get through. I'm working on my husband to create an account, but he's really stubborn about these things. Might end up being worth it to use the service just to avoid the headache.

I've been a tax preparer for 15 years, and this issue comes up EVERY SINGLE YEAR. SSA is supposed to mail the 1099s by January 31st, but many never arrive. For 2025, they started a phased distribution in early January, but COVID staffing issues plus USPS problems created delays. Your fastest options, in order: 1. My Social Security account - instant download 2. Visit local office - same day (with potential long wait) 3. Call SSA - 5-10 business days for mailed replacement If you can't get through on the phone, try calling right when they open at 8am or right before they close at 5:30pm. Those tend to be slightly less busy times.

This is really helpful, thank you! Do you know if we absolutely need the official form, or if there's some way to file without it? We have the total amount from his bank deposits, just not the official form.

You technically can file without it if you know the exact amount, but I don't recommend it. The 1099-SSA shows more than just the total - it shows how much was withheld for Medicare premiums and any tax withholding, which affects your return. Without those details, you could end up with an incorrect filing that might trigger an IRS notice later.

Has your husband checked his informed delivery from USPS? Sometimes the SSA 1099 comes in an envelope that doesn't look official and gets tossed accidentally. Also, if he moved in the last year and didn't update his address with SSA directly (separate from USPS change of address), that could be why. They don't always get the address updates from postal service.

We haven't moved and we don't have informed delivery set up. But that's a good point about it maybe not looking important. I'll check our recycling bin just in case we missed it! Would it say Social Security on the envelope or come in a plain one?

Just want to update - I just got my 1099-SSA in the mail TODAY after requesting it 3 weeks ago. So it's taking way longer than they say. I would definitely push your husband to create an online account, it's so much faster!!

Thanks for the update! 3 weeks is way too long to wait. I've been pestering him about creating an account. I might just sit him down tonight and help him set it up whether he likes it or not!
