When will Social Security mail 2024 SSA-1099 tax forms? Haven't received mine yet
I need to file my taxes soon and I'm still waiting on my SSA-1099 from Social Security. Does anyone know if they've mailed them out yet for 2024? My neighbor said she already got hers last week, but I haven't received anything. Do they mail them automatically or do I need to request it? This is my second year receiving benefits, and I can't remember when it arrived last year. Also, is there a way to get it online if mail is delayed in my area?

SSA doesn't send W2 forms, they send SSA-1099 forms for Social Security benefits. They're required to mail them by January 31st each year. They should be arriving now, but you can also print a replacement online by logging into your my Social Security account at ssa.gov. Just go to your account and look for the 'Replacement Documents' or 'Tax Information' section. Much easier than waiting for mail!

•Oh thank you! You're right, it's the SSA-1099, not a W2. I tried logging into my account but I'm locked out because I forgot my password. Guess I'll have to call them.

•I check my mail every day, so I don't think it was stolen. Maybe mine is just delayed in the mail. I'll give it a few more days before I panic.

If you need your SSA-1099 right away and can't access your online account, you can also call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 to request a replacement. However, be prepared for extremely long wait times (often 1-2 hours) or getting disconnected. I had to try multiple times last year when I needed a replacement form. The phone system is incredibly frustrating.

•If you need to actually reach someone at Social Security without the endless hold times, try Claimyr.com - it got me through to a rep in about 20 minutes instead of the 2+ hours I was facing. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU showing how it works. Saved me a massive headache when I needed my 1099 reissued last month because I lost the original one.

Just to clarify some misinformation in this thread: The SSA-1099 is NOT a W2 form. W2s come from employers and show wages. The SSA-1099 shows Social Security benefits received and is what you need for tax filing if you received SS benefits. They're totally different forms for different purposes. And yes, they should all be mailed by January 31st as required by law. If you haven't received yours by mid-February, you should definitely request a replacement either online or by phone.

I had the SAME PROBLEM last year!!! Never got my form in the mail and then had to scramble right before tax deadline. The SSA customer service is TERRIBLE - I waited on hold for 3 HOURS and then got disconnected!!! The whole system is broken. I ended up having to go to my local office and wait for 4 hours just to get a stupid piece of paper they should have mailed me. This government is so incompetent it's ridiculous.

•While the frustration is understandable, you actually don't need to visit an office for this. The online my Social Security account gives you immediate access to print your 1099. If you can't access your account, calling early in the morning (right when they open) often means shorter wait times. The local offices are overwhelmed with cases that truly can't be handled online or by phone.

Thank you all for the helpful responses! I was able to reset my password and log into my my Social Security account. Found the SSA-1099 under the Replacement Documents section just like you said. I printed it out and now I'm good to go with my taxes. Really appreciate everyone's help!

•Good point! I do have some other retirement income so I'll probably owe taxes on part of my Social Security. I'll make sure to account for that when I file.
