Social Security 1099 missing for deceased mother - Should we have received it by now?

My mother passed away last June and was receiving Social Security benefits until then. I've been waiting for her SSA-1099 form to arrive since I need it for filing her final tax return, but nothing's shown up yet. Her address was the same as mine (she lived with me), so the form should have come to my mailbox. It's already February - aren't these forms supposed to be sent out by the end of January? Should I be concerned it hasn't arrived? Do I need to contact SSA specifically about a deceased beneficiary's 1099? Any advice would be appreciated!

I went through this last year with my father who passed away. You should have received the 1099-SSA by now, as they're required to mail them by January 31st. The form would be issued in your mother's name and SSN, not yours, even though she shared your address. You have a few options: 1. Call SSA directly at 1-800-772-1213 (though prepare for long wait times) 2. Visit your local SSA office in person (bring your ID and proof you're handling her affairs) 3. If you have access to your mother's my Social Security account online, you can download the 1099 directly Be prepared to provide her Social Security number, death certificate information, and proof that you're authorized to handle her affairs (executor documents, etc).

Thank you for the detailed advice. I don't have access to her online account, and honestly, I'm dreading those long phone wait times. Do you know if they'll issue a replacement quickly once I reach them? I'm trying to file her taxes soon.

When taxpayers die, the SSA is supposed to send their final 1099-SSA to the last address on record. Since your mother lived with you, that's why you expected to receive it. Here are a few important things to know: 1. The SSA sometimes has processing delays with deceased beneficiaries 2. They occasionally hold these forms for estate representatives rather than sending to the last address 3. In some cases, the death may not have been properly processed in their system Definitely contact the SSA asap since tax deadlines are approaching. If you have her death certificate and letters testamentary/letters of administration (or whatever your state uses to designate the person handling the estate), have those ready when you call.

I had a NIGHTMARE trying to get my husband's final 1099 after he died!!! Called SSA for WEEKS and could never get through! Kept getting disconnected or put on hold for HOURS!!!! Finally had to take a day off work and go to the local office. Even then they made me wait 3 hours just to request the form. Then another TWO WEEKS before it came in the mail. The whole system is BROKEN!!!

I've been helping people connect with SSA for their 1099 forms and other urgent needs. Have you tried using Claimyr? It's a service that gets you through to an actual SSA representative without the endless waiting. I was skeptical at first, but it worked amazingly well for getting my aunt's missing 1099 last year. Just go to claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU showing how it works. Saved me hours of frustration and I got the form reissued within days.

Yes, it absolutely works! I was able to get through to a representative in about 15 minutes instead of spending hours on hold or getting disconnected. They connected me directly to SSA and I stayed on the line the whole time. For something time-sensitive like getting a replacement 1099 for tax filing, it's definitely worth it. My aunt's replacement form arrived about 7 days after I made the call.

Update: I finally got through to someone at SSA this morning after trying for two days. They confirmed they sent the 1099-SSA in January but it may have been lost in the mail. They're sending a replacement that should arrive within 10 business days. The representative mentioned they've had numerous calls about missing 1099s this year. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!
