Social Security website down for 2 weeks - anyone else having access issues?

Has anyone else been completely locked out of the Social Security website since their 'system update'? I've been trying to check my benefit calculation for over 2 weeks now and keep getting a technical error message that says 'We apologize, but our system is currently unavailable. Please try again later.' I've tried multiple browsers, cleared my cache, even used my daughter's laptop - nothing works! I need to verify some earning records before my FRA next month and this is incredibly frustrating. I've called the 800 number FIVE times but the hold times are ridiculous (3+ hours according to the recording). I'm not physically able to sit at the local office for hours. Does anyone know if there's a widespread outage or is it just my account? Any tricks to getting through on the phone without wasting an entire day? I'm at my wit's end here.

The SSA definitely did a system update around the 15th that's caused widespread problems. I work with seniors and about half my clients can't access their accounts right now. The SSA hasn't officially acknowledged it on their site, but when I called on behalf of a client, the rep confirmed they're having 'technical difficulties with the online portal' affecting 'a significant number of users.' She couldn't give a timeframe for fixing it. The phone lines are overwhelmed because everyone who can't use the website is calling instead.

Thank you for confirming this! I thought I was going crazy or doing something wrong. Did they give any suggestions for urgent matters? My benefit calculation seems wrong based on my last statement and I need to fix it before my FRA next month.

SAME PROBLEM HERE!!! Been trying for 9 days straight. Called 3 times and got disconnected TWICE after waiting over an hour each time!!! Third time I waited 2.5 hours and finally got someone who had NO CLUE when it would be fixed. This is RIDICULOUS!!! How are we supposed to manage our benefits if we can't even access the system?? I need to change my direct deposit information and can't do it!!

The whole system is a joke. My dad had the same thing happen last year - couldn't change his address online for 3 weeks after he moved. SS needs to hire some actual tech people instead of using systems from 1995

I experienced the same issue last week but found a workaround that might help some of you. The main mySocialSecurity login page is having problems, but if you go through the SSA homepage and click on

Thank you for the workaround suggestion! I just tried the alternate login method and still got the error, but I'll keep trying at different times of day. That Claimyr service sounds interesting - I'll check out the video. At this point I'd try anything to avoid sitting on hold for 3+ hours.

I'm actually logged in right now with no problems. Try accessing the site between 4:30-5:30am Eastern time. The system is least busy then and that's when I've had success. Also, if you're trying to check earnings records specifically, you can request that by mail using form SSA-7004 (Request for Social Security Statement). Takes about 4-6 weeks to receive, but might be faster than waiting for the website issues to be fixed.

4:30 IN THE MORNING??? You gotta be kidding me!!! Why should we have to wake up at ridiculous hours just to access OUR information? This is insane! And waiting 4-6 weeks for mail? I need to change my direct deposit NOW not in 6 weeks! Completely unacceptable!!

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try early morning tomorrow. Unfortunately the mail option won't work for me since I need to address this before my FRA next month. I appreciate the form number though - good to have as backup.

Had the same problem but mine magically started working today! Try checking if you have any browser extensions that might be blocking it. I turned off my ad blocker and that seemed to help. Also my neighbor said they're doing maintenance on weekends so maybe try Monday?

Building on this advice - I've found that the SSA website often has compatibility issues with certain browsers. For the most reliable access, use Microsoft Edge (unfortunately) or Firefox. Chrome seems to have the most problems with the SSA website, especially if you have any security extensions active. Also, try accessing through a desktop/laptop rather than a mobile device, as the mobile version has more frequent technical issues.Regarding the system update, I spoke with an agent yesterday who confirmed they're still working through some database integration issues that are affecting about 30% of accounts. They're prioritizing fixes for beneficiaries with immediate payment issues, so if you're just checking records, you might experience longer delays.

I'll definitely try Firefox - I've been using Chrome with several extensions. And good to know about the database issues affecting some accounts. Mine might be in that 30%. Really appreciate the detailed information!

That's good to know. Maybe I'll try the local office if I can't get through online or by phone this week. I was avoiding it because the last time I went (about a year ago), I waited over 3 hours. But maybe it's better now.

Just a quick update - I checked the SSA's Twitter account and they finally acknowledged the website issues. They posted about an hour ago that they're

Thank you for this update! I don't use Twitter so I would have missed this. At least there's an official timeline now. I appreciate everyone's help and suggestions!
