Social Security online account login loop between SSA and Login.gov - need help breaking the cycle!

I'm completely frustrated trying to access my Social Security account online. I keep getting stuck in this ridiculous loop between my SSA account and Login.gov. Every time I try to sign in, it bounces me back and forth between the two sites, then eventually displays a message saying I only need ONE ID. But I can't figure out which one it wants me to use! I've tried clearing cookies, using different browsers, even my daughter's laptop. Nothing works. Has anyone else dealt with this Login.gov/SSA authentication nightmare? Is there some trick to breaking this cycle so I can actually access my benefits information? I need to check on my recent application status but can't get through by phone either.

I had the EXACT same problem last month! The SSA website and Login.gov kept sending me in circles. What finally worked was completely signing out of BOTH services, clearing my browser cache (not just cookies), and then starting fresh at the SSA.gov homepage. When prompted, I chose to use my Login.gov account, but made sure to check the 'remember this device' option. For some reason that broke the loop. Hope this helps!

Thanks! I'll try the complete sign-out approach. Did you have to wait any specific amount of time between signing out and trying again? I'm desperate to check my application status.

this happens to lots of people. the websites don't talk to each other right. i had to use firefox instead of chrome and it worked. weird but true!

I've been using Safari - maybe I'll download Firefox and give that a try. These government websites are so frustrating!

This is a common issue happening since SSA integrated with Login.gov. Here's what you need to do: 1. Clear ALL browsing data (not just cookies) 2. Restart your computer completely 3. Go directly to ssa.gov (not Login.gov) 4. Click "Sign In" and select "Sign in with Login.gov" 5. When prompted, use the Login.gov credentials that you've previously linked to your SSA account 6. Important: Do NOT try to create a new account or connection If that doesn't work, the issue might be that you have multiple Login.gov accounts or multiple my Social Security accounts that are creating a conflict. In that case, you may need to contact either Login.gov support or SSA directly.

Thank you for these detailed steps! I'm going to try this right now. I might have accidentally created multiple accounts when I was getting frustrated with the process.

If you're still having trouble after trying the technical solutions, you might want to try Claimyr to get through to an actual SSA agent by phone. I was stuck in this same Login.gov/mySocialSecurity loop for weeks and couldn't get anyone on the phone. I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me connected to an agent who fixed my account issues on the spot. They have a video that shows how it works at https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU - Basically saves you from waiting on hold for hours. The agent I spoke with said they're seeing this login issue a lot lately and they can fix it from their end.

Thank you for this suggestion! I've been trying to call the SSA for days with no luck. I'll check out that service if my next attempts to log in don't work. At this point I just need to talk to an actual human who can help me.

This login loop problem is due to the incomplete integration between Login.gov and the SSA systems. I work in IT (not for SSA) and can confirm a few technical details that might help: 1. The SSA systems can sometimes cache your authentication status incorrectly 2. Login.gov uses specific security tokens that can get corrupted in transit 3. Sometimes your account gets flagged for additional verification when there's a pattern of multiple login attempts Besides the browser clearing suggestions already mentioned, make sure you're not using any VPN services when trying to log in, as this can trigger security flags. Also, try accessing during off-peak hours (early morning or late evening) when the authentication servers have less traffic. If you continue having problems, you may need to request an account reset through the SSA's phone system, though I know that can be its own challenge.

Thank you for explaining the technical side of things! I was using a VPN, so that might be part of the problem. I'll try again with it turned off and during early morning hours.

ANYONE ELSE NOTICE how the SSA website gets worse every time they "improve" it??? Used to be able to log in no problem before they added this login.gov nonsense.

0 coins

Completely agree. Every new security layer they add creates more problems than it solves. I understand they need to protect our information, but they need to test these systems better before rolling them out to millions of beneficiaries.

UPDATE: I finally got in!! What worked for me was a combination of things: 1) Completely signed out of both SSA and Login.gov, 2) Cleared ALL browsing data as suggested, 3) Turned off my VPN, 4) Used Firefox instead of Safari, and 5) Made sure to use EXACTLY the same email address on both sites. Apparently I had been using my gmail with and without a period in different places, and the system was treating them as different accounts. Thanks everyone for your help!

Great to hear you solved it! The email address consistency is a key point many people miss. For anyone else reading this thread with similar issues, always use exactly the same email format across both systems. The SSA system and Login.gov can interpret email variations differently (like username@gmail vs username+ssa@gmail or user.name@gmail vs username@gmail).

So glad you got it working! Your solution about the email address consistency is really important - I bet that trips up a lot of people. The gmail with/without periods thing is such a subtle issue that most wouldn't think to check. Thanks for updating us with what finally worked, it'll definitely help others who run into this same login loop nightmare.

I'm so grateful to everyone who shared their solutions here! I've been dealing with this exact same login loop issue for about 3 weeks now and was getting nowhere with the phone lines. Reading through all these suggestions gives me hope that I can finally get back into my account. I'm going to try the complete sign-out method first, then move on to the Firefox browser suggestion if that doesn't work. The email consistency tip is something I never would have thought of - I probably do have slight variations in how I've entered my email across different sites. It's frustrating that such a critical system has these kinds of integration issues, but at least this community is helping each other work around them. Thank you all for taking the time to share what worked for you!

Welcome to the struggle! I just joined this community after dealing with my own SSA login issues. Reading through everyone's solutions here has been incredibly helpful - it's reassuring to know we're not alone in this frustrating situation. The step-by-step troubleshooting approaches people have shared are so much more detailed than anything I could find on the official SSA website. I'm definitely going to bookmark this thread and try the browser clearing + Firefox method myself. It's amazing how this community has basically created a better troubleshooting guide than the government provides! Good luck getting your account access sorted out.

I've been battling this same login loop for almost a month now! Reading through everyone's experiences here makes me feel less crazy - I was starting to think I was the only one dealing with this SSA/Login.gov nightmare. I've tried most of the browser-clearing suggestions but haven't had success yet. The email consistency tip from @Anna Xian is brilliant though - I just realized I might have used different variations of my email when setting up my accounts initially. Going to try that along with the Firefox browser switch this weekend. It's ridiculous that we need a whole community troubleshooting guide just to access our own benefits information, but I'm so grateful everyone is sharing their solutions here. The official SSA help resources are basically useless for this specific issue. Fingers crossed one of these methods finally breaks the cycle for me!

Hey there! I just joined this community after struggling with my own government service issues, and wow - this thread has been a lifesaver! It's so frustrating when you need to access your own benefits and the system keeps failing you. I haven't dealt with this specific SSA/Login.gov loop yet, but I've had similar authentication nightmares with other government sites. The email consistency issue that @Anna Xian discovered is such a great catch - those tiny variations in how we enter our emails can really mess up these integrated systems. I m'bookmarking all these solutions in case I run into this problem myself. Really hoping the Firefox + email check combo works for you! This community is doing better customer support than the actual government agencies.

This thread has been incredibly helpful! I'm dealing with a similar SSA/Login.gov loop issue right now and was getting nowhere on my own. The troubleshooting steps everyone has shared here are way more comprehensive than anything I could find on the official government websites. I'm particularly interested in trying the email consistency fix that @Anna Xian discovered - I never would have thought that slight variations in email formatting could cause such major authentication problems. It's honestly ridiculous that we need to become IT experts just to access our own Social Security information, but I'm so grateful this community exists to help each other navigate these broken systems. Going to try the complete sign-out + Firefox browser method this evening. Thank you all for sharing your experiences and solutions!

Just wanted to jump in as someone new to this community - this whole thread has been such a relief to find! I've been stuck in the same SSA/Login.gov authentication loop for over two weeks now and was starting to feel like I was losing my mind. Seeing all these detailed solutions from everyone gives me so much hope. The email consistency issue that @Anna Xian figured out is something I definitely need to check - I have a feeling I might have used different formats when setting up my accounts originally. I m'planning to try the complete browser clearing + Firefox method tonight, and if that doesn t'work, I ll'definitely look into that Claimyr service @Ev Luca mentioned for getting through to an actual agent. It s both'frustrating and reassuring to know this is such a widespread problem. Thank you all for creating this incredibly helpful troubleshooting guide through your shared experiences!

Wow, I just stumbled across this thread and I'm so relieved I'm not the only one dealing with this Login.gov/SSA nightmare! I've been stuck in the same endless loop for about 10 days now and was getting absolutely nowhere. Reading through everyone's solutions has been incredibly enlightening - especially the email consistency issue that @Anna Xian discovered. I never would have thought that something as simple as having a period in my Gmail address in one place but not another could cause such chaos with the authentication system. I'm definitely going to try the complete sign-out + clear all browsing data + Firefox browser combo this weekend. It's honestly embarrassing that we need a community-created troubleshooting guide just to access our own government benefits, but I'm so grateful everyone here has shared their experiences and solutions. The official SSA help documentation is practically useless for this specific integration problem. Thank you all for taking the time to help fellow community members navigate these broken systems!

Welcome to the community! I just joined recently too and this thread has been an absolute goldmine of information. It's incredible how many people are dealing with this exact same SSA/Login.gov loop issue - really shows how widespread the integration problems are. The collective troubleshooting wisdom here is honestly better than anything you'll find on the official government sites. I'm also planning to try that email consistency fix that @Anna Xian discovered, along with the Firefox browser switch. It s'wild that such small details like email formatting can completely break these systems. Good luck with your attempts this weekend, and definitely keep us updated on what works for you! This community support has been a lifesaver compared to trying to navigate this mess alone.

I just joined this community and found this thread while searching for solutions to my own SSA login nightmare - thank you all for sharing such detailed troubleshooting steps! I've been stuck in this same Login.gov/SSA authentication loop for almost 2 weeks now and was starting to think I was going crazy. The email consistency discovery by @Anna Xian is absolutely brilliant - I just realized I probably have slight variations in how I entered my email across the different systems (sometimes with periods, sometimes without, maybe even different capitalization). It's mind-boggling that such tiny details can completely break the authentication between two government systems that are supposed to work together seamlessly. I'm going to try the complete sign-out + clear all browsing data + Firefox browser method tonight, and I'll definitely double-check that my email formatting is identical across both platforms. If that doesn't work, I might look into the Claimyr service that @Ev Luca mentioned since I've had zero luck getting through on the phone lines. It's honestly ridiculous that we need this level of community detective work just to access our own Social Security information, but I'm so grateful this discussion exists. The official government help resources are basically useless for this specific integration problem. Will definitely report back with results - fingers crossed!

Just discovered this community while frantically searching for SSA login help - what perfect timing! I've been trapped in this exact same Login.gov/SSA authentication loop for about 5 days now and was seriously starting to question my sanity. Reading through all these detailed solutions has been like finding a goldmine of actual useful information. The email consistency discovery by @Anna Xian is absolutely genius - I just had a lightbulb moment realizing I definitely used different variations of my email address when setting up these accounts (probably gmail vs g-mail or with/without dots). It's incredible that such tiny formatting differences can completely break the connection between two government systems that are supposedly integrated. I'm going to try the complete logout + clear all browser data + Firefox method tonight, making sure my email addresses are formatted identically on both platforms. If that fails, I'll definitely check out the Claimyr service for phone support since I've had zero luck with the regular SSA phone lines. It's honestly ridiculous that we need this level of community troubleshooting just to access our own benefits, but I'm so grateful everyone here has shared their hard-won solutions. Welcome everyone who's joined this community recently to help with these SSA login issues! As someone who's been dealing with government website problems for a while now, I can say this thread has become the most comprehensive troubleshooting guide I've ever seen for the SSA/Login.gov authentication loop problem. It's incredible how this community has basically reverse-engineered solutions that the official support channels couldn't provide. The email consistency issue that @Anna Xian discovered really highlights how poorly these integrated systems handle even minor formatting differences - it's a perfect example of why government IT implementations need better testing before rollout. For anyone new to this thread, I'd definitely recommend starting with the complete sign-out + clear all browsing data + Firefox browser method, while making absolutely sure your email formatting is identical across both SSA and Login.gov accounts. The fact that we've all had to become amateur tech support agents just to access our own benefits is frustrating, but the collaborative problem-solving here has been amazing.
