SSA.gov website down? Can't access my Social Security account today

Is anybody else having trouble accessing the SSA.gov website today? I've been trying to log into my mySocialSecurity account since 8AM to check on my disability application status, but the site keeps timing out or giving me error messages. Tried different browsers (Chrome and Edge) but no luck. Called the SSA helpline but there's a 2+ hour wait time just to speak to someone! Really frustrated because I need to submit some additional medical documentation before my deadline this Friday. Anyone else experiencing issues or know if there's a system outage?

Yes! I've been having the same problem since yesterday afternoon. The main SSA.gov page loads but as soon as I try to log in, it crashes. I called my local office and they said they're aware of 'technical difficulties' with the online portal but couldn't give me an ETA for when it'll be fixed. Something about server maintenance that's taking longer than expected. If you need to submit documents urgently, you might want to fax them or drop them off at your local office instead of waiting for the site to come back up.

Thank you! At least I know it's not just me. I'll try calling my local office directly instead of the main number. Do you know if they accept emailed documents? My scanner isn't working and I don't have a fax machine.

Same here. I've been trying all morning. This is the third time this month that the website has had issues! It's becoming a pattern - seems like every time there's a benefits payment week approaching, the system crashes. Just another example of our outdated government infrastructure...

The website issues are definitely widespread right now. I just got off the phone with my local SSA office (took 45 minutes to get through) and they confirmed they're experiencing a nationwide system outage affecting both the public website and their internal systems. The representative said they're hoping to have everything back online by tomorrow morning, but couldn't make any guarantees. For anyone with urgent submission deadlines, they're being flexible with the timeframes due to the technical issues. If you absolutely need to submit something today, you'll need to visit your local office in person with paper copies. They're not accepting emailed documents for security reasons, and even their fax system is tied to the same network that's having problems.

This is so helpful, thank you! I'll call my local office now and see if they'll extend my deadline. Really appreciate the information!

Not working for me either!! Been trying since 7am. Why don't they ever warn us when they're doing maintenance??? Some of us have important deadlines!

They actually do post maintenance notices on the homepage, but this doesn't sound like planned maintenance. Seems like an unexpected outage. I work in IT (not for SSA) and sometimes these things happen despite the best planning. The SSA systems are notoriously outdated - they're still running some applications on COBOL programming from the 1980s! Congress hasn't properly funded their technology updates in decades.

If you need to reach SSA urgently, I had good luck using Claimyr last month when the phone lines had 3+ hour waits. It's a service that holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me literally hours of waiting on hold. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU I used it when I needed to verify my earnings record after finding some discrepancies. The website was working but I needed to talk to an actual human, and this service was a lifesaver.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll check that out if I can't get through to my local office. Anything to avoid sitting on hold for hours while trying to work.

I used this service too when dealing with my retirement application issues. Definitely worth it - the SSA phone system is absolutely terrible. I got disconnected three times after waiting over an hour each time before I found Claimyr.

For future reference, the SSA system status page at https://www.ssa.gov/systemstatus/ sometimes provides information during outages (though ironically, this page can also go down during major outages). Another option is to check their social media accounts as they sometimes post updates about technical issues there faster than they update their website. Glad to hear it's working again for everyone!

Great tip about the system status page! I've bookmarked it. Also, following them on Twitter/X is helpful since they usually post announcements about outages there first.

This is exactly why I always keep backup methods ready when dealing with SSA! I learned the hard way after missing a deadline last year due to a similar outage. Now I keep my local office number saved, know their walk-in hours, and even have a fax service app on my phone just in case. The SSA systems are unfortunately prone to these issues, especially during high-traffic periods like benefit payment weeks or tax season. Glad everyone was able to get back online and that the community shared such helpful workarounds!

That's really smart planning! I wish I had thought of that earlier. This outage caught me completely off guard and I was panicking about my deadline. Your backup strategy is definitely something I'll implement going forward - especially keeping the local office info handy and knowing their walk-in hours. Thanks for sharing that tip about the fax app too, I had no idea those existed! It's clear that dealing with SSA requires some extra preparation given how frequently these technical issues seem to happen.

This is such excellent advice! I'm definitely going to set up a backup plan like yours. I had never considered keeping a fax app on my phone - that's brilliant. It's frustrating that we have to work around these system failures, but your proactive approach really makes sense given how often SSA has these outages. I'm also going to write down my local office's hours and keep their direct number saved. Thanks for sharing your experience - it'll save a lot of us from similar stress in the future!

Just wanted to add my experience - I've been dealing with SSA for my elderly mother's benefits and we've encountered this same issue multiple times over the past year. What I've learned is that the SSA website tends to have problems during the first few days of each month (when benefits are processed) and around major holidays when there's increased traffic. One thing that's helped us is creating accounts on multiple devices and browsers ahead of time, so if one doesn't work we can try another. Also, if you're helping a family member, make sure you have their Representative Payee paperwork ready because the local offices always ask for it when you visit in person. The SSA really needs to invest in better infrastructure - it's 2025 and we're still dealing with systems that can't handle normal user loads. But in the meantime, having those backup plans like Oliver mentioned is absolutely essential!

This is incredibly helpful, especially the tip about creating accounts on multiple devices and browsers beforehand! I never would have thought of that. Your point about the timing patterns is really valuable too - knowing that the first few days of the month and holidays are more prone to outages will help me plan better. I'm also dealing with SSA matters for my aging father, so the Representative Payee paperwork reminder is spot on. It's frustrating that we have to work around such outdated systems, but your practical advice makes navigating these challenges much more manageable. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I just wanted to thank everyone who shared their experiences and solutions in this thread! As someone who's relatively new to navigating SSA services, this was incredibly eye-opening. I had no idea these outages were so common or that there were workarounds like Claimyr or keeping backup plans ready. The tips about timing patterns, having multiple browser accounts set up, and knowing local office details are all things I'm going to implement right away. It's unfortunate that we have to work around such unreliable systems, but this community's collective knowledge really shows how we can support each other through these frustrating situations. I'm definitely bookmarking this thread for future reference!

Welcome to the community! I'm new here too and this thread has been such a learning experience. It's really reassuring to see how helpful everyone is and how much practical knowledge gets shared. I had the same reaction - I had no idea SSA outages were this frequent or that there were so many workarounds available. The fact that people are willing to share specific tools like Claimyr and detailed backup strategies really shows what a supportive community this is. I'm also going to bookmark this thread and start implementing these tips right away. Thanks for putting into words what I was thinking - it really does make navigating these government service challenges feel less overwhelming when we can learn from each other's experiences!

As a newcomer to this community, I'm really impressed by how quickly everyone jumped in to help Felix with this issue! I've been lurking here for a while but this is my first time posting. I actually experienced the same SSA website problems yesterday when trying to check on my SSDI review status. Like others mentioned, I got the timeout errors and couldn't log into my account at all. What really struck me reading through all these responses is how knowledgeable everyone is about workarounds and backup strategies. I had never heard of services like Claimyr or thought about keeping local office numbers handy. The tip about SSA systems having more issues during the first few days of each month is something I wish I'd known earlier - I always seem to try accessing my account at the worst possible times! It's frustrating that in 2025 we're still dealing with these outdated government systems, but this community's collective wisdom really makes navigating SSA challenges feel much more manageable. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences and solutions - I'm definitely going to implement several of these backup strategies going forward!

Hi Cynthia, and welcome to posting in our community! I'm also fairly new to actively participating here, though I've been dealing with SSA issues for a while now. Your experience with the SSDI review status check sounds exactly like what many of us went through yesterday - those timeout errors were so frustrating! I totally agree about being impressed by everyone's knowledge and willingness to help. When I first joined this community, I was amazed at how much practical information gets shared that you just can't find in official SSA documentation. The timing tip about avoiding the first few days of the month is gold - I wish someone had told me that months ago when I was constantly running into issues! It really is unfortunate that we have to develop all these workarounds for basic government services, but I'm grateful we have this space to share strategies and support each other. Looking forward to seeing more of your posts and experiences as you navigate the SSA system!
