Social Security website login not working - could pending retirement application be the cause?
Has anyone else been unable to log into their MySocialSecurity account today? I keep getting an error message saying 'service temporarily unavailable' when I try to check my pending retirement application status. I filed for my retirement benefits on March 5th and want to see if there's any progress. The SSA rep I spoke with last week mentioned the process actually takes around 90 days (not 45 days like their website claims). I'm wondering if my pending application might be causing this login issue? Never had problems accessing my account before today. Anyone experiencing similar issues or know what might be happening?

•Thanks for confirming it's not just me! Wonder if they're doing some kind of system update. Wish they'd at least post a notice about it somewhere.

I just checked and can't get in either. My sister filed for SS retirement back in February and she said the website goes down pretty regularly. Usually back up within a day.

•a WHOLE DAY?? seriusly how do they expect people to manage their benefits if the site is down that long??

•A day isn't terrible I guess, but still frustrating when you're anxious to check status. Your sister filed in February - has she gotten approved yet?

This happens all the time! The SSA systems are notoriously unreliable. I've been trying to navigate their bureaucratic maze for my disability claim and it's been a NIGHTMARE. Can't access online, can't get through on the phone, local office appointments booked months out. It's almost like they WANT us to give up on getting our benefits!

•While system outages do happen occasionally, they're normally resolved within 24-48 hours. The MySocialSecurity portal undergoes regular maintenance, typically scheduled overnight. For urgent matters during outages, you should call your local office directly rather than the national number.

Don't worry about your application causing any system issues - that's definitely not the case. The SSA routinely does system maintenance and updates that can cause temporary outages. And just to set expectations correctly: the 90-day timeframe you were quoted is closer to reality than the 45 days on the website, especially for retirement claims filed in 2025. A few tips: 1) Try accessing during off-peak hours (early morning or late evening) 2) Clear your browser cache and cookies 3) Try a different browser altogether 4) If you need immediate status info, calling is better than waiting for the site to come back up

•Thank you for the detailed advice! I'll try early tomorrow morning with a different browser. I've been trying to avoid calling because the wait times are so brutal. Last time I needed to speak with someone at SSA, I waited over 2 hours before giving up.

I had the same issue last month when checking on my spouse's survivor benefits application. The website was down for nearly 3 days! When I finally got desperate enough to call, I found a service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual SSA representative in about 20 minutes instead of waiting for hours. You might want to check them out at claimyr.com - they have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU The SSA agent told me system outages are common but don't affect the processing of applications already in the system. They're just frustrating for those of us trying to check status.

•Thanks for the tip! I'll check out that service if the website is still down tomorrow. Did they tell you anything about why these outages happen so frequently?

•The agent I spoke with said they're working with very outdated computer systems that need constant maintenance. Apparently they're in the middle of a multi-year modernization project, but until then, we just have to deal with the outages.

•Really? Let me try again... nope, still getting the unavailable message. Maybe they're rolling out access gradually as they fix whatever the issue is.

SSA IT specialist here. The current outage is due to scheduled maintenance that was supposed to complete by 6am EST but encountered some technical difficulties. Engineering teams are working to resolve the issues, and full service should be restored within the next 8-12 hours. Regarding your application timeline: The current processing time for retirement benefits is 75-90 days in most cases. Your online status may not update frequently during this period, but rest assured your application is still being processed even when the website is unavailable. If you have immediate concerns about your specific application, calling your local office with your confirmation number is your best option.

UPDATE: The website is working again this morning! I was able to log in and check my application status. It's still showing as "processing" but at least I can see it's in the system. Thanks everyone for your help and commiseration!

•Glad to hear it! The "processing" status is normal and will likely remain that way until your claim is fully adjudicated. Just remember that the online status updates can lag behind the actual processing by several days.
