Social Security survivor benefits payment date - will it follow my husband's birthday or mine?
I recently applied for survivor benefits after losing my husband last December. I'm turning 60 next month and decided to file for the early survivor benefits even though I know they're reduced. The SSA rep I spoke with was super busy and rushed through my questions. What I forgot to ask was: when I start receiving the monthly payments, will they come on the date determined by MY birth date or my late HUSBAND'S birth date? His birthday was on the 11th so he always got his disability payment on the second Wednesday. My birthday is on the 28th which would put me in the 4th Wednesday group. I'm trying to plan my bill payments accordingly, and the difference of 2 weeks matters for my budget planning. Has anyone gone through this who can tell me which schedule they'll use?

I'm in the exact same situation! Applied for survivor benefits when I turned 60 last year (my hubby passed in 2022). They go by YOUR birth date, not your husband's. My husband was paid on 3rd Wednesday, but my survivor check comes on 1st Wednesday based on my birth date. It took about 8 weeks for my first payment to arrive after approval, and they included some back pay to my application date.

•Thank you! That's exactly what I needed to know. Did they notify you when your application was approved or did you just suddenly see the deposit? I've been checking my bank account daily like a crazy person.

The SSA website is USELESS on explaining this clearly!! I spent 3 HOURS trying to find this information when my wife died. You'll get paid based on YOUR birthday, not his. They restructure it as if it's YOUR benefit now, even though it's calculated from his earnings record. The whole system is needlessly confusing and they make it impossible to get simple answers without waiting on hold for hours!!

To answer your question clearly: Survivor benefits payment dates follow YOUR birth date, not your deceased spouse's. The payment schedule is: - Born on 1st-10th: Second Wednesday - Born on 11th-20th: Third Wednesday - Born on 21st-31st: Fourth Wednesday Since your birthday is on the 28th, you'll receive payments on the fourth Wednesday of each month. Also, be aware that when you first start receiving benefits, there might be an adjustment period, so the first payment might not follow this schedule exactly. After that, it should regularize to the fourth Wednesday pattern.

•Thanks for laying it out so clearly. So I'll need to adjust my bill payment schedule since I was used to having money come in earlier in the month when my husband was alive. I appreciate the confirmation!

•3 months! I was hoping it would be faster than that. Did she have to keep calling them for updates or did they just notify her eventually?

I've been trying to reach SSA for weeks about my own survivor benefits question, and it's been IMPOSSIBLE. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to a real person at SSA in under 10 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU. Saved me hours of redial hell. The agent confirmed that survivor benefits follow YOUR birth date for payment scheduling, not your spouse's.

•I can confirm this is correct information. As a financial planner who works with many widowed clients, I always advise them that survivor benefits follow the recipient's birth date for payment scheduling. This is true regardless of when the deceased spouse received their benefits. The Social Security Administration treats it as your benefit (based on your spouse's earnings record) once you start receiving it, so all aspects of payment - including deposit date - follow your information.

I just wanted to update everyone - my application was approved! It took about 5 weeks from application to approval. And yes, they are scheduling my payments based on MY birth date (4th Wednesday). I got a letter in the mail with all the details. The first payment included some back pay to the application date. Thanks everyone for your help!

•Congrats! So happy for you. One thing to keep in mind - if you ever go back to work while receiving these early survivor benefits, make sure you understand the earnings limit. I got hit with an overpayment notice because I earned too much part-time income and nobody warned me about it!

That's wonderful news! Congratulations on getting approved so quickly - 5 weeks is actually pretty fast from what I've seen others experience. I'm glad this thread helped clarify the payment schedule question. It's such a relief when you can finally plan your budget around knowing exactly when the money will come in. The back pay is a nice bonus too. Thanks for updating us - it's really helpful for others going through the same process to see how it worked out for you.

So glad to hear you got approved quickly! I'm still waiting on my survivor benefits application - it's been about 3 weeks now. Your post gives me hope that I'll hear back soon. I had the same confusion about payment dates when I applied. The SSA rep I spoke with also seemed rushed and didn't explain much. It's frustrating that such basic information isn't clearly available on their website. Thanks for sharing your experience and congrats on getting through the process!

•Hang in there! Three weeks is still within the normal timeframe from what I've seen others post about. I know the waiting is stressful, especially when you're dealing with everything else after losing your spouse. You're right that the SSA website could be much clearer about these basic details - it shouldn't take a community forum to get straightforward answers about payment schedules. Hopefully you'll hear back soon with good news!

I'm so sorry for your loss and glad to hear you got approved! Your update is really helpful for others going through this process. I'm actually in a similar situation - my husband passed away in January and I'll be turning 60 in a few months. I've been hesitant to apply because I wasn't sure about all the details, but seeing your experience makes me feel more confident about moving forward. The fact that you got approved in 5 weeks and received back pay is encouraging. Did you apply online or did you have to go into an office? I'm trying to figure out the best way to start the process.

•I'm so sorry for your loss too. I applied online through the SSA website - it was actually pretty straightforward once I got started. The online application walked me through all the required documents I needed to upload (death certificate, marriage certificate, etc.). I didn't have to go into an office at all, which was a relief since I wasn't ready to deal with waiting rooms and crowds while still grieving. The hardest part was just gathering all the paperwork, but once I had everything together, the actual application only took about an hour to complete. Don't hesitate too long - you can apply up to 4 months before you turn 60, and the sooner you apply, the sooner you'll start receiving benefits. Feel free to ask if you have other questions about the process!

•@Genevieve Cavalier I m'so sorry for your loss as well. Just wanted to add that when you do apply, make sure you have all your documents ready beforehand - it really does speed up the process. Besides what Amina mentioned death (certificate, marriage certificate ,)you ll'also need your husband s'Social Security number and your own employment history if you ve'worked. The online system will save your progress if you need to take breaks, which was helpful for me since I got emotional going through all the paperwork. Also, don t'worry about making the perfect "decision" on timing - you can always change your mind later about when to start benefits if your circumstances change. The most important thing is getting the application in so you have options.

I'm really glad you shared this update! As someone who went through a similar process last year after my spouse passed, I know how stressful it can be when you're trying to figure out basic details like payment schedules while dealing with grief. It's such a relief when you finally get that approval letter and can start planning your finances accordingly. Five weeks is actually quite good timing - mine took about 7 weeks. The back pay to your application date is standard practice, which is why it's worth applying as soon as you're eligible rather than waiting. Thanks for taking the time to update everyone here - these real experiences are so much more helpful than trying to decode the official SSA website!

•Thank you so much for sharing your experience! As someone who's new to this community and just starting to research survivor benefits, it's incredibly reassuring to hear real stories from people who've actually been through the process. The official government websites can be so confusing and impersonal - it really helps to see how it actually works in practice. I'm sorry for everyone's losses in this thread, but I'm grateful that you're all willing to share your experiences to help others navigate this difficult time. The fact that you got approval in 5 weeks and the payment schedule follows your birth date are exactly the kind of practical details that are so hard to find elsewhere. This community seems like such a valuable resource for people dealing with these complex government benefits.

Thanks for sharing your update! It's so helpful to see real experiences from people who've gone through this process. I'm sorry for your loss, but I'm glad to hear your application was approved relatively quickly. As someone who works with seniors navigating government benefits, I can confirm that 5 weeks is actually pretty good timing - I've seen cases take much longer. The payment schedule information you've shared is spot-on too. One tip for anyone else reading this: once you start receiving survivor benefits, make sure to keep SSA informed if you have any major life changes (like getting remarried or returning to work) as these can affect your benefits. The earnings limit that NeonNinja mentioned is particularly important if you're under full retirement age and decide to work while receiving benefits. Congratulations on getting through what I know can be a complicated and emotionally difficult process!

•This is such valuable information, thank you Lucas! I'm new to this community and just learning about all these benefits. The earnings limit you mentioned is something I hadn't even thought about - that's exactly the kind of detail that could really trip someone up if they're not aware of it. It's amazing how helpful this community is compared to trying to navigate the official SSA resources alone. Everyone sharing their real experiences makes such a difference for those of us just starting to figure all this out.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Diego. What a relief that you got approved so quickly and received that back pay! Your experience really highlights how important it is to have accurate information about these payment schedules - that two-week difference you mentioned can absolutely make or break a tight budget. I'm going through something similar myself (my husband passed away 6 months ago and I'm approaching 60), and this whole thread has been incredibly helpful in understanding what to expect. It's frustrating that the SSA reps are so rushed during these calls when we're dealing with such important financial decisions during an already difficult time. Thanks for taking the time to update everyone - knowing that 5 weeks is a realistic timeline and that the payment follows your birth date (4th Wednesday in your case) gives me a much better sense of what to plan for when I apply. Wishing you all the best as you adjust to this new chapter.

•Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful response, Samantha. I'm so sorry for your loss as well. You're absolutely right about how that two-week timing difference can really impact budget planning - it's one of those practical details that becomes so important when you're managing on a fixed income. As someone new to this community, I've been amazed by how supportive and informative everyone has been. It's clear that people here really understand what others are going through during this difficult transition. Your point about the SSA reps being rushed is so valid - it seems like such a common experience based on what I've read in this thread. Best of luck when you do apply - it sounds like you're well-prepared thanks to all the insights shared here!

I'm so sorry for everyone's losses shared in this thread. As someone new to this community, I'm incredibly grateful for all the detailed information you've all shared about survivor benefits. My own situation is just beginning - my husband passed away two months ago and I'm 58, so I have a couple years before I can apply for survivor benefits. Reading through Diego's experience and everyone's responses has been so educational. The fact that payment dates follow YOUR birth date rather than your deceased spouse's is exactly the kind of practical detail that's impossible to find clearly explained anywhere official. It's also encouraging to see that 5 weeks for approval is possible - that gives me realistic expectations for when I do apply. This community seems like such a valuable resource for navigating these complex government processes during what's already such a difficult time. Thank you all for being so generous with sharing your experiences and knowledge.

•Maya, I'm so sorry for your loss. You're absolutely right about how valuable this community is - I'm also relatively new here and have been amazed by how willing everyone is to share their real experiences with these government benefits. It's such a stark contrast to trying to navigate the official SSA website or get clear answers from their phone representatives. Having two years before you're eligible actually gives you a good advantage to prepare and gather all the necessary documents ahead of time. From what I've read in this thread, having everything organized beforehand (death certificates, marriage certificates, Social Security numbers, etc.) seems to really help speed up the application process when the time comes. It's also helpful to know that you can apply up to 4 months before you turn 60, so you won't have to wait until your actual birthday to start the process. This community really does seem like a lifeline for people navigating these complex situations during such a difficult period.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Diego, and congratulations on getting your survivor benefits approved! As someone who's new to this community, I've been following this entire thread and it's been incredibly educational. Your experience really shows how important it is to have clear, accurate information about these processes. The fact that you got approved in 5 weeks with back pay is encouraging for others who are waiting or planning to apply. What strikes me most is how much more helpful this community discussion has been compared to official SSA resources - the payment schedule based on YOUR birth date (not your husband's) is such a crucial detail for budget planning, yet it seems like something their representatives rush through or don't explain clearly. Thank you for taking the time to update everyone with your results. Real experiences like yours make all the difference for people navigating this difficult process during an already challenging time.

•I completely agree, Carmen! As someone who's also new to this community, I've been amazed by how much clearer the information is here compared to the official SSA website. Diego's experience really shows the value of having a supportive community where people share their real-world experiences. The 5-week approval timeline and the clarification about payment schedules based on the recipient's birth date are exactly the kinds of practical details that make such a difference when you're trying to plan during an already overwhelming time. It's unfortunate that government representatives seem so rushed that they don't take time to explain these important details properly. This thread has been incredibly helpful for understanding what to expect from the survivor benefits process.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, Diego! I'm new to this community and currently researching survivor benefits for my own situation. Your detailed account of the 5-week approval process and confirmation that payments follow YOUR birth date (not your spouse's) is incredibly helpful. I'm sorry for your loss, but it's encouraging to see that the process can move relatively quickly and that you received back pay to your application date. The practical details you've shared - like knowing you'll receive payments on the 4th Wednesday based on your birthday - are exactly the kind of information that's so hard to find on the official SSA website. This whole thread has been more informative than hours of trying to navigate government resources. Congratulations on getting through what I know must have been a difficult and stressful process during an already challenging time.

•Thank you for such a thoughtful comment, Fatima! As someone who's also new to this community, I completely agree about how much more helpful these real-world experiences are compared to the official government resources. Diego's story really demonstrates the importance of having a supportive community where people can share practical details that make such a difference during difficult times. The fact that he got approved in 5 weeks and the payment schedule follows his own birth date rather than his late husband's are exactly the kinds of specifics that help people plan and prepare. It's amazing how much clearer everything becomes when you hear from someone who's actually been through the process rather than trying to decode confusing government websites. This thread has been incredibly educational for those of us just starting to navigate these complex benefit systems.
