Social Security direct deposit delayed for overseas recipients - March 3rd payment missing
I'm an American expat living in Portugal for the past 3 years. I normally receive my Social Security retirement deposit reliably on the 3rd of each month through direct deposit to my international bank account. Today is the 3rd and nothing has shown up yet. I checked my MySocialSecurity account and it shows the payment was processed, but there's no money in my account. I'm getting concerned since I depend on this payment for rent and bills. Has anyone else living overseas experienced a delay with their March payment? Could this be related to that system maintenance or whatever confusion happened at SSA last week? I heard they had some technical issues. How long should I wait before contacting someone? And who would I even contact from overseas? The international calling situation to SSA is a nightmare.

Ya this is happening to lots of people right now. I'm in Mexico and my payment didn't show up either. Probably that computer glitch they had last week. Last time this happened it took like 2-3 extra days to show up but it eventually did.

•Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone! Did you do anything special last time to get it resolved or it just showed up without you having to contact anyone? My landlord isn't exactly patient about rent being late.

International direct deposits sometimes experience delays due to intermediary banks and exchange processes. What you're experiencing is likely related to the SSA system maintenance that occurred February 23-26. There was a notice about potential payment processing delays. For international recipients, I recommend waiting 3 business days before taking action. If you don't receive your payment by March 6th, you'll need to contact the Federal Benefits Unit (FBU) that serves Portugal, which I believe is located at the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon. They handle Social Security issues for Americans living abroad. Most overseas payment issues resolve themselves within the additional 3-day window. The SSA system is still catching up from last week's maintenance.

OMG I'm having EXACTLY the same problem but in Spain!!! My payment always comes on the 3rd like clockwork but nothing today. I'm FREAKING OUT because my rent is due tomorrow and I don't have enough in my account without the SS payment. What if there's some new rule that they aren't paying people overseas? Could they do that without warning us? I've been living here for just 8 months and I'm worried they're going to cut me off for some reason I don't know about!!

•They can't just stop payments to qualified beneficiaries living overseas without notice. That would be illegal. This is almost certainly related to the SSA's computer system maintenance that ran overtime last week. Several domestic payment systems were also affected. Your money will arrive, it's just delayed. If you need immediate assistance, you could potentially get an emergency payment processed through your nearest Federal Benefits Unit, but that's usually a last resort.

I worked at SSA for 22 years before retiring to Costa Rica. This happens periodically with international payments, especially after system updates. The issue is that international direct deposits go through the Treasury Department's International Direct Deposit (IDD) system, which sometimes gets backlogged after SSA system maintenance. In my experience, the payment will likely appear within 3-5 business days. If it doesn't, you'll need to contact either: 1. The Federal Benefits Unit at your nearest US Embassy 2. The SSA's International Operations office directly Don't wait longer than 5 business days to report a missing payment. While most delays resolve themselves, it's important to have a record of the issue in case there's a systemic problem affecting multiple beneficiaries.

•Thank you for this detailed explanation. It's reassuring to hear from someone with SSA experience. I'll wait until the 8th before taking action. Do you happen to know if there's a direct number for the International Operations office that works well from overseas? The regular SSA number is practically impossible to reach from Portugal.

My payment is late too but im in canada not europe. First time this has happened in 6 years! But my daughters friend who gets survivors benefits said her payment came on time so maybe its just affecting certain types of payments or certain countries?

•That's an interesting observation. The system maintenance specifically affected the Retirement and Survivors Insurance processing systems, but it's possible that not all payment streams were equally impacted. Different payment types are sometimes processed through different channels, particularly for international recipients. The Treasury Department prioritizes certain payment categories over others when there are backlogs.

The REAL problem is trying to call SSA from overseas!! I tried for THREE DAYS last month about my missing COLA adjustment. International calls to their 800 number don't work half the time, and when they do you wait FOREVER just to get disconnected!!! Total nightmare. And the embassy here in Bangkok just gives me a runaround.

•Have you tried using Claimyr? I discovered it last year when I had issues with my benefits calculation. It helps you get through to SSA representatives without the endless waiting. Worked great for me calling from Costa Rica. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU and their website is claimyr.com. It's specifically designed to help with the SSA phone system issues.

Mine is still not here 😭 But at least I know others are getting theirs so maybe tomorrow for me? My bank sometimes takes longer to process international transfers.

•That's common. Different international banks have different processing times for incoming wire transfers. Some can take up to 3 additional business days depending on their relationship with intermediary banks. As long as the payment has been initiated by SSA (which seems to be the case based on other users' experiences), it should appear in your account soon.

For anyone who continues to experience delays beyond 5 business days, here's what you should do: 1. Contact your bank first to confirm they don't see any pending deposits 2. Check your mySocialSecurity account to verify the payment status shows as processed 3. Contact the Federal Benefits Unit (FBU) at your regional U.S. Embassy or Consulate 4. If the FBU can't help, request an emergency payment if you're in financial hardship Keep in mind that the Treasury Department sometimes implements additional verification steps for international payments after system updates, which can cause temporary delays. These additional security measures are designed to prevent fraud but can unfortunately cause stress for legitimate beneficiaries.
