Missing February Social Security payment but March shows scheduled - why did SSA skip a month?

I'm completely baffled and honestly a bit worried. I retired on November 12th last year and started receiving my Social Security retirement benefits in December. Everything was going fine with payments arriving like clockwork every month until now. I didn't receive ANYTHING for February! When I logged into my MySocialSecurity account, it shows my next payment is scheduled for March, but nothing about February's payment at all. It's like they just decided to skip a whole month of my benefits! Has anyone else experienced this? I'm on a fixed income now and really counting on that money. Could this be some kind of weird payment schedule adjustment I didn't know about? I tried calling SSA but got disconnected after waiting 45 minutes. Help!

This sounds like what happens with the payment schedule adjustment when you first start receiving benefits. What day of the month is your birthday? SSA pays benefits based on birth date: 1-10 get paid on second Wednesday, 11-20 get paid on third Wednesday, and 21-31 get paid on fourth Wednesday. When you first start, sometimes there's an adjustment period where they align you to the proper schedule, which can result in what seems like a skipped payment. Check your payment history in your account - there might be an explanation there.

My birthday is on the 29th, so I should be in the fourth Wednesday group. But I've been getting payments already for December, January, etc. Why would they suddenly need to "adjust" now? There's nothing in my payment history explaining this - February just isn't there at all!

I had something similar happen last year. Turns out they had sent me a letter about an "benefit adjustment period" that I completely missed. Check your mail carefully - they probably sent you something explaining the situation. In my case, they were adjusting my payment schedule and the "missing" payment was actually rolled into the following month's payment. I'd recommend checking if your March payment is larger than normal. If you can't wait, you really need to get through to SSA directly.

I've gone through ALL my mail from SSA and there's absolutely nothing about any adjustment period. My benefits amount hasn't changed since I started receiving it. I'm going to check if the March payment is larger when it comes, but that doesn't help me now when I have bills to pay!

I checked the calendar but it doesn't explain anything. My payment date should be the 4th Wednesday which was February 28th this month. But nothing showed up in my account, and when I log in to MySocialSecurity it literally shows nothing for February, just the next payment for March. Very frustrating!

I WENT THROUGH THE EXACT SAME THING! The SSA is a DISASTER with their payment systems! They did this to me and when I finally got someone on the phone after DAYS of trying, they said it was a "processing adjustment" but couldn't even explain what that meant! Then they had the nerve to tell me I'd have to wait until the next month! I had to borrow money from my daughter just to pay my electric bill. The whole system is broken!

That's exactly what I'm afraid of! I can't afford to just miss a whole month's payment with no warning. Did you eventually get the money, or did they really just make you skip a month?

I experienced something similar but it wasn't actually a missing payment - turns out my bank had put a temporary hold on it for some reason. Have you checked with your bank to make sure they didn't receive and then hold the deposit? Sometimes they do that if there's any kind of flag on the account or if the deposit pattern changes.

I just called my bank and they said there's no record of any deposit from SSA for February at all. So it's definitely not on the bank's end - SSA just didn't send the payment. This is so frustrating!

When I had trouble reaching the SSA about a missed payment, I used this service called Claimyr that got me through to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of waiting for hours or getting disconnected. You might want to check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU showing how it works. Basically, they hold your place in line and call you when an agent is available. Was a lifesaver when I had a similar issue with a missing payment that turned out to be due to a processing error on their end.

Thanks for the suggestion! At this point I'm desperate enough to try anything. I'll check out that website. Did they actually resolve your missing payment issue when you finally got through?

Yes, they did! The agent was able to see that there was a processing error and they fixed it right away. The payment was in my account within 3 business days. Definitely worth getting through to a real person rather than trying to figure it out online.

my neighbor worked for SSA for 30 years before retiring and she always told me they never actually skip payments unless theres a problem with eligibility. have you had any changes lately? new job? inheritance? moved? sometimes these trigger reviews and they hold payments

No changes at all! That's what's so strange. I haven't worked since retiring in November, no inheritance or other income changes, same address... everything has been completely stable. I've only been receiving benefits for a few months so I don't know why there would suddenly be an eligibility issue.

After reading through all your responses, I'm pretty sure this is a specific issue that needs direct SSA intervention. One possibility is that there was an unprocessed Change of Payment Address (even if you didn't change addresses), a bank account verification issue, or a routine eligibility review. These can sometimes result in a payment being held but not necessarily communicated clearly in your online account. Your March payment being scheduled suggests you're still eligible, which is good news. I would definitely prioritize speaking with an agent directly.

Update: I FINALLY got through to SSA this morning after trying for three days straight! Turns out there was a "system flag" on my account because my payment date needed to be adjusted to align with my birth date payment schedule. The representative said February's payment wasn't actually skipped - it's being processed as a separate payment and should arrive within 5-7 business days. She removed the flag and said all future payments should arrive on schedule. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!
