Social Security benefit application stuck in review since November - February payment at risk?
I filed my retirement benefits application back in November expecting payments to start in January. My SSA account shows someone started reviewing it on November 7th (over 2 months ago!), but there's still no decision. My first payment should arrive February 12th, which is less than a month away, and I'm really starting to stress about this delay. My application was super straightforward - I've never been married, never received SSDI, and all my earnings records are correct. I'm at my FRA and just want my regular retirement benefits. If they needed additional information from me, wouldn't they have sent a letter or called? I've checked my spam folder and made sure my contact info is updated on my SSA account. Has anyone experienced similar delays recently? Should I be worried about not getting paid in February? I'm wondering if I should try calling them, but I've heard the wait times are horrible right now.

I went through something similar last year. Applied in September, didn't hear anything until mid-December. They eventually processed everything with no issues, but I was sweating it for a while! One thing I learned is that SSA processing times vary widely depending on which field office handles your claim. Some are really backed up while others process claims quickly. As long as you applied before you wanted benefits to start, they should pay you retroactively, so you won't lose any money even if they miss the February payment date.

•That's somewhat reassuring. Did you end up calling them or did they just process it without any contact from you? I'm worried they might need something from me and I'm not aware of it.

This happens ALL THE TIME with SSA!!!!! My sister waited THREE MONTHS and then found out they had "lost" her application! Check your My Social Security account every few days and CALL THEM. Don't just wait or you might end up like my sis having to start all over again.

•Oh no, that's exactly what I'm afraid of! I've been checking my account obsessively. Did your sister ever find out why they lost her application?

The good news is that even if they don't process your application in time for the February payment, they'll include any back payments you're owed when they do finally process it. The official processing guideline is 6 weeks, but it's often taking 8-12 weeks right now due to staffing shortages at many SSA offices. If you want to be proactive, I'd recommend calling your local office directly rather than the national number. Sometimes they can check on things more efficiently. If your application truly is straightforward as you describe, it should just be a matter of time before approval.

•Thanks for this information. I didn't know about the 6-week guideline - I'm already well past that at over 8 weeks now. I'll try calling my local office tomorrow.

•I've been hesitant to call because I've heard about the long wait times. But you're right, maybe they do need something. I'll try calling super early tomorrow morning.

I had the exact same issue last year when I applied for my retirement benefits. After waiting almost 10 weeks with no updates, I was getting anxious about missing payments. I tried calling the regular SSA number multiple times but couldn't get through after being on hold for hours. I finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual SSA agent within 30 minutes instead of waiting on hold all day. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU When I finally spoke to someone, turns out they were waiting for employment verification from a job I had 20 years ago! Once I explained the situation, they processed my application within a week. Definitely worth checking if there's a simple hold-up they haven't communicated.

•Is that service legit? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach SSA these days.

•Yes, it's completely legitimate. They basically navigate SSA's phone system for you and call you back when they reach an agent. Saved me hours of frustration. The SSA agent I spoke with was able to immediately see what was delaying my application.

My retirement application was delayed too. I got really worried but then randomly got approved after 10 weeks with no communication. My first payment showed up right on schedule even though the online status never updated until after I was paid. The system is just slow sometimes.

•That's encouraging to hear! So you never had to contact them and it just worked itself out? I'm hoping mine follows the same path.

This happened to me in December. The website showed "in review" for months! I finally went IN PERSON to my local office (got there 45 minutes before they opened and still waited 2 hours). Turns out they were waiting on me to submit a form that they never told me about! Something about additional income verification. Check your online message center too - sometimes they send notices there that don't trigger an email alert. The most frustrating part of the Social Security system is their lack of communication. They expect you to follow up with them rather than proactively reaching out when they need something from you.

•That's incredibly frustrating! I just checked my message center and there's nothing there. Maybe I should try going in person too, although I really wanted to avoid that if possible.

Based on everyone's feedback, I'd definitely recommend contacting SSA rather than continuing to wait. While many applications do process automatically without issues, when there is a problem, they often don't proactively reach out. One important thing to know: even if they miss your February payment date, when they do approve you, they'll include any back payments you're entitled to. So you won't lose any money - it just might be delayed. Make sure when you talk to them that you confirm your payment start date so they backdate correctly. And don't worry too much about having a straightforward application - sometimes those get delayed too just due to workload and staffing issues at particular offices.

•Thanks so much for the reassurance. I'm definitely going to contact them this week one way or another. I'll make sure to confirm the payment start date like you suggested.

I wanted to add one more thing - when you do speak with SSA, be sure to ask them to note in your file that you've been trying to follow up on your application status. This creates a paper trail showing you've been proactive, which can be helpful if there are any issues later with payment timing. Also ask them for a specific timeframe for when you should expect a decision, and get the name of the representative you speak with. These simple steps can make follow-up much easier if needed.

•That's excellent advice, thank you! I'll definitely get the representative's name and ask for that timeframe and note in my file.

I'm new to this community but wanted to share my recent experience since it might help. I just went through a similar situation with my disability benefits review that took 3+ months. What finally worked for me was using the "Contact Us" feature in my online SSA account rather than calling. I was able to submit a message asking for a status update on my application, and they responded within 5 business days with specific information about what was causing the delay. It turned out they needed additional documentation from one of my previous employers, but for some reason that request never made it to me. Once I provided what they needed, my case was processed within 2 weeks. The online messaging system seems to be more reliable than phone calls right now, and you get a written record of all communications. Might be worth trying that route alongside calling - sometimes multiple touchpoints help move things along faster.

•That's a really helpful tip about using the online messaging system! I hadn't thought about trying that approach. It's frustrating that they needed additional documentation but never communicated that to you - seems like that's a common theme with SSA unfortunately. I'm definitely going to try the online contact feature in addition to calling. Having a written record sounds much better than trying to remember phone conversations. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I'm sorry to hear about the stress you're dealing with - waiting months without communication from SSA is incredibly frustrating! I wanted to add another perspective based on what I've seen in this community. You mentioned your application was straightforward, which is actually good news. Sometimes the simplest cases get delayed not because there's a problem, but because they get deprioritized in favor of more complex cases that require immediate attention. It's backwards, but that's how the system sometimes works. One thing I'd suggest is documenting everything from this point forward - dates you call, who you speak with, what they tell you. If there are any issues with your payment timing later, having that documentation can be really helpful. Also, don't be afraid to escalate if the first person you talk to can't give you specific answers. Ask to speak with a supervisor if needed. The February payment date is still achievable if they process your application in the next couple of weeks, so there's still hope you won't experience any payment delays. Keep us posted on what you find out when you contact them!
