Social Security application submitted - will SSA call me or just deposit first payment without notice?
I submitted my Social Security retirement application online on February 15th and received the confirmation email saying they got my application. It mentioned they'll contact me if they need more information, but I'm getting anxious about what happens next. It's been about 3 weeks now with radio silence. I'm turning 66 (my FRA) in April, but I applied for benefits to start in March. Since my birthday falls on the 9th, I believe I should receive payments on the 2nd Wednesday each month, right? Do they always call before processing the first payment? Or will the money just show up in my account one day? Also, will my first payment include any back benefits for March when it eventually comes through in April? This waiting with no updates is making me nervous! I check my MySocialSecurity account daily but nothing has changed.

They don't always call. In my experience (and for friends who've retired recently), SSA typically just processes your application and you'll see the payment appear in your account on your scheduled payment day. The online process is pretty streamlined these days. Yes, your payment date would be the 2nd Wednesday since your birthday is on the 9th. Payment schedule is: - 2nd Wednesday: birthdays 1-10 - 3rd Wednesday: birthdays 11-20 - 4th Wednesday: birthdays 21-31 Keep in mind that your first payment for March benefits will come in April. SS pays in arrears (for the previous month).

•Thank you! That's a relief to hear. I was worried something went wrong since I haven't heard anything. So basically I just need to be patient and wait for April's payment date? Any idea how long processing typically takes from application to first payment?

•Oh wow, 5 weeks with no communication? That actually makes me feel better about my situation. I guess I need to just be patient. Did everything process correctly for your wife? Was the amount what you expected?

The Social Security Administration generally doesn't call applicants unless they need additional information. Their process is quite efficient when applications are complete. Since you mentioned applying online, you likely provided all the necessary information already. Regarding your payment schedule, you're correct that with a birthday on the 9th, you'll receive payments on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. Your first payment should arrive in April (for March benefits). Social Security benefits are paid the month after they're due. So if you applied for benefits to begin in March, your first payment will come in April on your scheduled payment date. If you're concerned, you can also check your MySocialSecurity account - it should eventually update to show your benefit amount and payment information once processing is complete.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! My MySocialSecurity account still shows my application as "pending" but doesn't show any projected payment amounts yet. I'm hoping that updates soon. Is there a typical timeframe when that information appears in the online account?

•The MySocialSecurity account typically updates about 1-2 weeks before your first payment is scheduled. So if your first payment is due in April, you might see the account update with payment information by late March. Every case varies slightly, but that's the general pattern I've observed.

In my experience, the SSA is TERRIBLE about communication!! I applied last year and heard NOTHING for 2 months. I called repeatedly and couldn't get through to anyone. Eventually my payment just showed up in my account with ZERO notification beforehand. No call, no letter, NOTHING! The system is broken. They expect seniors to just wait in the dark with no updates about something as important as their retirement income. It's ridiculous!!

•Same happened to me! No communication at all and then money appeared. But at least I got paid what I was supposed to. The waiting is so stressful though.

•That's really frustrating! I hope my process goes more smoothly. I've been trying to call for some reassurance but keep getting disconnected after waiting on hold forever.

I went through this process last year. From my experience, they typically don't call unless there's an issue with your application. I applied online and then just received my first direct deposit about 5 weeks later. One thing to be aware of: your first payment for March benefits will come in April (as SS pays for the previous month), and yes, they'll pay you for the full month of March even though you applied in February for March benefits. If you're really concerned about the status, trying to call SSA directly can be incredibly frustrating. I spent hours on hold and got disconnected multiple times. I eventually used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an agent within 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU It was worth it to get confirmation that everything was processing correctly and gave me peace of mind instead of anxiously checking my bank account every day.

•Thank you for the recommendation! I've been trying to call the SSA for three days now without getting through. I'll check out that service if I don't see any updates in my account soon. Did the agent you spoke with give you any specific timeline information when you called?

•Yes, when I finally got through to an agent, they confirmed my application was in process (despite no online status updates) and gave me an estimate of when to expect the first payment. It was a huge relief just knowing everything was on track. The agent also verified my payment date would be the 2nd Wednesday, which gave me confidence the system was working correctly.

Don't worry too much! Everything you're experiencing is totally normal. My own SS retirement application took about 4 weeks to process last year. No calls, no updates, then suddenly my account was updated and the payment appeared right on schedule. The only people who tend to get calls are those with complicated situations (like eligible dependents, foreign earnings, etc) or if something is missing from their application. Online applications are pretty thorough so if you completed everything, you should be fine. And yes, your first check will arrive in April for March benefits since SS always pays a month behind.

•Thanks for sharing your experience! I feel much better knowing this is normal. My situation is pretty straightforward - just standard retirement benefits, no dependents or complications. I'll try to be patient and stop checking my account obsessively every day!

I was so confused by this too! Applied in November, heard absolutely nothing, then money appeared in January! I was expecting some kind of letter or confirmation before they started sending me money. Guess that's just how they operate! 🤷♀️
