Retirement application stuck in Step 2 for 3 months - normal for January start date?

I filed my SS retirement application back in November for a March 2025 start date (first payment expected April 2025, third Wednesday). It's showing as Step 2 of 3 on my MySocialSecurity account for about 11 weeks now with zero updates or communication. Is this typical processing time these days? I'm getting antsy since my first payment should be coming in just 6 weeks, but my application seems stalled. Should I wait it out or spend half a day trying to reach someone at SSA? The website doesn't offer any way to check status details - just unhelpful phone numbers. Just wondering what other retirees experienced with their timeline recently. Thanks for any insights!

This is actually pretty normal. Applications for future start dates often sit in Step 2 until about 30-45 days before your payment is due to start. The system is designed to prioritize processing claims that are closer to payment date. Since your start date is March (with April payment), they're likely just now starting to work through those applications. The SSA processes millions of claims and prioritizes them based on when payments need to begin.

Thanks for the reassurance. I didn't realize they prioritized by payment date. Guess I'll try to be patient for another few weeks before panicking!

Same here! I applied in August for a December start date and it just sat there forever. Then boom - approved in November with no communication. Social Security's systems are so outdated.

I filed my retirement application last year and had EXACTLY the same concern!! My application was stuck at step 2 for almost 4 months and I nearly had a heart attack thinking something was wrong. Called the 800 number constantly but could NEVER get through - absolutely infuriating!!! I ended up driving to my local office after taking a day off work just to find out everything was fine and \

Yup, that's the SSA for you. They never tell you anything until the last minute. My mom went through the same thing last year.

I went through this exact situation last year. Applied in September for January benefits and my application stayed in Step 2 until mid-December. I finally decided to call but spent 3+ hours trying to get through to SSA with no luck. I discovered a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes. The agent confirmed everything was fine and my application was just waiting in queue for processing. Sure enough, it moved to Step 3 a week later and my first payment arrived on schedule. You can see how it works in their demo: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU - saved me hours of frustration!

Just to add some technical context here: The SSA's processing workflow does prioritize claims based on start date proximity. For retirement benefits with future start dates (like yours with a March 2025 start), the system typically processes them 4-6 weeks before the first payment date. While the application shows as Step 2, it's actually in the adjudication queue. Step 3 only appears after a claims specialist has reviewed all your information, verified your earnings record, and completed the final benefit calculation. This is normal timing - but if you want peace of mind, calling about 30 days before your scheduled first payment is reasonable.

That service sounds interesting - I might try it if I don't see movement in a couple weeks. Glad to hear your payment arrived on time despite the long wait in Step 2!

My wife waited 5 months for her SS to get approved last year, but somebody told me that's because she was filing for spousal benefits which take longer. Are you filing for just your own record or spousal too? That might make a difference in timing.

Just filing on my own record. I'm not eligible for spousal benefits - been divorced over 15 years and marriage didn't last 10 years. Interesting that spousal claims take longer though, I didn't know that.

One other thing to check - log into your MySocialSecurity account and make sure all your documents show as

Update: I took everyone's advice and waited another week. Just checked my account again and it finally moved to Step 3 - approved! Looks like everyone was right about them processing it closer to the payment date. Thanks for preventing me from wasting hours on the phone! Still no communication from SSA directly, but at least the online status changed.

Great news! That's exactly how the system is supposed to work. You should receive an official award letter in the mail within 7-10 days that will confirm your exact benefit amount and payment date. I always recommend keeping that letter in your permanent records since it has your specific benefit information that can be useful for future reference.
