Applied for Social Security retirement Dec 20 - will benefits start on time for April 1st date?

Just submitted my retirement application online on December 20th for benefits starting April 1st. My MySocialSecurity account shows my application is "processing" with two out of three progress bars filled. I'm getting nervous because they haven't contacted me for any additional documentation yet. Should I be worried? A few questions keeping me up at night: 1. With this timeline, will my payments actually begin on April 1st or should I expect delays? 2. If they don't approve until after April 1st, will they backpay to my chosen start date? 3. Is it normal not to hear anything from them for this long? I'm turning 67 in March (my Full Retirement Age), and I really need these payments to start on time for budgeting reasons. Any insights from people who've recently gone through this would be so appreciated!

You should be fine! I applied in October for a January start date and had a similar experience. SSA typically processes retirement applications without needing additional documentation if your work history is straightforward and you've worked in covered employment. The two progress bars likely mean they've received your application and are processing it. To answer your questions: 1. Yes, payments will likely begin on schedule for your April 1st start date (though actually paid in May since SS pays a month behind) 2. If there are delays, they will backpay to your chosen start date 3. Completely normal not to hear anything during processing - silence is usually good news If you're at FRA, you don't need to worry about earnings limits either. I'd suggest checking your account once a week, but otherwise try not to stress!

Thank you so much for the reassurance! I didn't realize they pay a month behind - that's really helpful to know for my budget planning. So I should expect my first payment in May for the April benefit, correct? I'm relieved to hear silence is usually good news!

The SSA is IMPOSSIBLE to deal with!! My application took 4 months and then they screwed up my payment amount. Then when I tried calling to fix it I spent HOURS on hold only to get disconnected EVERY TIME!! The website is useless for actually resolving problems too. The whole system is designed to make you give up!!

I had the same horrible experience trying to reach them! After wasting days trying to get through, I finally used a service called Claimyr that got me connected to a live agent in under 20 minutes. Changed everything. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU or just go to claimyr.com. Saved me so much frustration when I needed to fix my direct deposit information.

Thanks for the tip! Might try that next time im ready to pull my hair out dealing with these people!

I'm a retired SSA claims specialist, and I can tell you that your timeline is perfectly normal. Applications filed 3-4 months before benefit start date give SSA plenty of processing time. The lack of contact is actually a good sign - it means they likely have all the information they need. A few technical points: 1. Since you're claiming at exactly FRA (67), you'll receive 100% of your Primary Insurance Amount (PIA) 2. Your first payment will arrive on the second Wednesday of May (payment schedule is based on birth date) 3. Direct deposit is standard, so ensure your banking details are correct in your mySocialSecurity account 4. If you're still working, there's no earnings test limit at FRA If nothing changes on your account by early March, you might want to call just to verify everything is on track.

I went through exactly the same thing last year! Applied in September for January start, had 2 bars for the longest time, and was freaking out by December because I hadn't heard ANYTHING. Then suddenly mid-December the third bar filled and I got a letter confirming everything. First payment showed up in February (they pay a month behind). One thing that confused me - I thought I'd be getting paid on the 1st of the month, but actually they pay on different Wednesdays depending on your birth date. Totally caught me off guard!

Thank you for sharing your experience! That's incredibly helpful to know. Did they notify you by mail or did you just see the third bar fill in online? I'm checking my account almost obsessively at this point!

Both actually! The third bar filled first and then about a week later I got the official award letter in the mail. The letter had all the payment details including the exact amount. Just keep checking your informed delivery from USPS if you have that set up!

I'm applying for regular retirement benefits since I'm turning 67 (my FRA) in March. Not disability or SSI.

oh ok thats the easiest one they usually process those pretty quick, my neighbor got confusd and thought she was getting SSI but it was really just regular retirement and it caused all kinds of problems

One important thing to remember: Social Security benefits are paid the month after they're due. So your April benefit will be paid in May, May's benefit in June, etc. This catches a lot of new retirees by surprise with their budget planning. And as others mentioned, your payment date is determined by your birth date: - Born 1st-10th: Paid on second Wednesday - Born 11th-20th: Paid on third Wednesday - Born 21st-31st: Paid on fourth Wednesday If you applied for benefits prior to May 1997, you get paid on the 3rd of each month instead.

I had no idea about the payment schedule being tied to birth date! My birthday is on the 19th, so looks like I'll be getting paid on the third Wednesday of each month. Really good to know for planning purposes.

I'm very sorry for your loss and the difficulties you're experiencing. Survivor claims can indeed be more complex than retirement claims. I'd recommend requesting a specific list of required documents in writing from your local office. You might also consider filing a request for reconsideration if they've denied your claim without proper explanation. The appeals process forces them to document exactly what is missing.
