Will my Social Security FRA payment arrive in December or January if my filing date was October?

I'm confused about when my first SS retirement payment will arrive. I filed for my Full Retirement Age (FRA) benefits on October 24th, 2024. Since 60 days from filing would be November 24th, should I expect my first payment on December 24th or will it not come until January 2025? It's been over a month and I still haven't received ANY confirmation letter. When I log into my MySocialSecurity account, it just says "in process" and I can't view any additional details. The status hasn't changed in weeks. Should I be worried? Has anyone experienced similar delays with their retirement application processing?

Social Security payments are made the month AFTER they're due. Since you filed in October, your first month of entitlement would be November (assuming you're at FRA). The November payment would be issued in December, typically on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Wednesday of the month depending on your birth date. Don't worry too much about not receiving a confirmation letter yet - SSA is experiencing significant backlogs. As long as your online account shows it's in process, they have your application. Processing times are running 30-45 days for straightforward retirement claims right now.

Thank you! I was born on the 15th, so I guess that would be the 3rd Wednesday? I'm still concerned about the lack of updates in my online account. Is there any way to find out if they need additional information from me without waiting for a letter that may never come?

The previous response has some incorrect information. Social Security pays benefits in the month they are due - but they're paid for the previous month. So if your entitlement begins November 2024, you'll receive that payment in December 2024. Your payment date is determined by your birth date: - 1st-10th of month: payment on 2nd Wednesday - 11th-20th: payment on 3rd Wednesday - 21st-31st: payment on 4th Wednesday Since you mentioned you were born on the 15th, you'll be paid on the 3rd Wednesday of December, which is December 18th, 2024.

Oh, that's really helpful to know the exact date! I think I understand better now - my November benefit comes in December. I was getting confused because I was thinking I'd get October's benefit in November, but since I filed in October, my entitlement starts in November. Is that right?

Oh no, that's exactly what I'm worried about! I don't want my application just sitting there if they need something from me. Did they eventually send you a letter requesting the birth certificate, or did you only find out by calling?

7 weeks?! I guess I shouldn't panic yet then. I'm just worried about missing a payment if there's a problem with my application.

After dealing with endless SSA phone troubles, I discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) last month when filing for my wife's retirement. It gets you through to an actual SSA agent without the endless busy signals and disconnections. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU I was able to confirm her application was complete and just waiting for processing. Gave us peace of mind instead of wondering if something was missing. In your case, I'd definitely check since you haven't gotten any confirmation letter yet.

Does this actually work? The SSA phone system is LITERALLY THE WORST. I've been hung up on so many times I've lost count.

Yes, it worked for me. Got through in about 30 minutes instead of calling for days. The agent confirmed everything was fine with my wife's application and gave us an estimated completion date. Definitely worth it for the peace of mind.

NOBODY at SSA ever knows what's happening with your claim!!! My husband filed in May, got a letter in June saying "approved", then NOTHING for 2 months! No payments! When he finally got through to someone, they said they were "recalculating" his benefit amount. No explanation, no timeline, no communication. Then suddenly in September, he got a HUGE deposit with all the back payments. ZERO apology for the delay. The system is BROKEN!!!

That sounds incredibly frustrating! At least he eventually got all his back payments. I'm worried they'll deny my claim for some reason and I won't find out until January when I'm expecting a payment that never arrives.

Since you're at FRA, here's another important point: Unlike early retirement where there's an earnings limit, you can earn unlimited income without affecting your benefits. If you're still working, that's an advantage of filing at your FRA instead of earlier.

That's good to know! I am still doing some consulting work, but it's fairly minimal. I was worried that might complicate my application.

I think ppl are confusing SSI and retirement benefits in some responses. SSI payments come on the 1st. Regular retirement comes on Wednesdays based on birth date like someone said above.

Good clarification. The OP is referring to retirement benefits at Full Retirement Age (FRA), not SSI. SSI (Supplemental Security Income) is needs-based and has completely different payment schedules and eligibility rules.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I'm going to try to get through to an agent to check on my application status. It sounds like the wait time is normal but I want to make sure they don't need any additional documents from me. I'll update when I know more!

Good idea. When you do speak with them, ask specifically if your application is "pending development" or just in the normal processing queue. "Pending development" means they need additional information or documentation.
