SSA still processing January retirement benefits 3 months after applying online - normal or problem?
I filed my retirement benefits application online back on September 28 and requested a start date of January 2025. It's been almost 3 months and when I check my account it still says "processing." I haven't received any mail, emails, or phone calls from SSA. Is this normal or should I be concerned? My FRA is 67 but I'm taking benefits at 65. Do they usually wait until closer to your benefit start date to process everything? I expected at least some kind of confirmation by now... Starting to worry something went wrong with my application!

This is actually pretty normal. The SSA often doesn't process applications until closer to your benefit start date, especially when you apply several months in advance. As long as your MySocialSecurity account shows it as "processing" and not rejected, you should be fine. They're likely just waiting until closer to January to finalize everything.

•Thanks for responding! Do you know how close to January they might process it? I was planning to travel in February and wanted everything settled before then.

the EXACT same thing happened to me last year!!! i applied in august for december benefits and didnt hear a peep until november. then they sent me a letter asking for my birth certificate (which i already uploaded online??) so make sure you have all your documents ready just in case. but yeah its normal for them to take forever

•That's really helpful to know! I did upload my birth certificate with my application but I'll make sure I have it handy in case they ask again. Did they call you or just send a letter?

This happened to me too! Don't worry about it, they're just super slow. My sister works for SSA and says they're crazy backed up with applications. As long as it says processing you're good.

In my experience, SSA typically starts processing retirement applications about 2-3 months before your benefit start date. Since you're requesting January benefits, they'll likely contact you in November or December if they need any additional information. One tip: check your spam folder regularly, as SSA emails sometimes end up there. Also, if you're taking benefits at 65 when your FRA is 67, remember you'll receive about 86.7% of your full benefit amount due to the early retirement reduction. Just want to make sure you factored that into your planning.

•Thanks for the detailed info! Yes, I've calculated the reduction and I'm okay with it. My spouse already gets a higher benefit amount, so this works better for our situation. I'll definitely check my spam folder - didn't even think of that!

I work with retirees and see this ALL THE TIME. SSA prioritizes processing claims that are closer to payment dates. They've got millions of applications and limited staff. While you wait, double-check that you have these ready in case they ask: 1. Birth certificate (original or certified copy) 2. Any name change documents if applicable 3. Banking info for direct deposit 4. Marriage certificate if claiming on a spouse's record If you're worried, you can always call SSA at 1-800-772-1213, but honestly they'll tell you the same thing - just wait.

•This is RIDICULOUS though. Why even let people apply 3+ months in advance if they're just going to sit on the applications? The SSA should at least send an email confirmation saying "We got your application, we'll process it in X timeframe." Communication is terrible and causes unnecessary stress for seniors.

I had to call them after waiting 2 months with no updates. Turns out they needed additional documentation but never contacted me! After 4 hours on hold, the agent told me my application was incomplete. Definitely try calling to check on the status. If you have trouble getting through their phone system, check out Claimyr (claimyr.com). I found it after my third attempt getting hung up on. They got me connected to an actual SSA agent in about 15 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU Honestly worth it for the peace of mind knowing your application is actually being processed correctly.

•That's concerning! I think I'll try calling them this week just to make sure everything's in order. I've heard the wait times are awful though. Thanks for the tip about Claimyr - I'll check it out if I can't get through.

btw are you applying for SSI or SSDI?? that might make a difference in processing times

•The original poster mentioned they're applying for retirement benefits (RIB), not SSI or SSDI. Those are disability programs with different eligibility requirements and processing timelines. Retirement claims generally process faster than disability claims.

Update: I finally called SSA today and got through after about an hour on hold. The agent confirmed my application looks good and is just waiting for processing closer to January. She said everything appears to be in order and I don't need to provide any additional documents at this time. Thanks everyone for your help and reassurance!

•Nice! Did you end up using the regular phone line or did you try Claimyr?

•Used the regular line - called right when they opened at 8am and still waited an hour. Next time I might try Claimyr to save some time!
