Social Security payment timing when FRA falls mid-month - October or November benefits?
I'm really confused about when my first SS retirement payment will arrive. My full retirement age (67 years and 2 months) is on May 14th, 2025. I submitted my application last week requesting benefits to begin when I reach FRA. On the application, there was a question about reduced benefits and I selected the option for "earliest month possible without a permanent age-related reduction". I can't figure out if I'll get benefits for May (paid in June) or if I have to wait for June benefits (paid in July) since my FRA date falls in the middle of May. The SSA website is so confusing on this! Has anyone dealt with this mid-month FRA situation? I've been planning my retirement budget around getting that first payment in June and now I'm worried I miscalculated. Appreciate any help understanding how this works!

if ur FRA is in may u get benefits for the whole month of may paid in june. SSA pays for the whole month no matter what day ur birthday falls on. its not prorated.

•Oh thank you! That's a relief to hear. So even though my FRA date is May 14th, I'll still get the full May benefit paid in June? I was worried they might make me wait until June's payment (in July).

I went through EXACTLY this situation last year! My FRA was on the 22nd of August and I was so worried about when payments would start. You'll definitely receive benefits for the month in which you reach your FRA - so May benefits paid in June. Just be aware that Social Security pays benefits in the month FOLLOWING the month for which they are due. So your May benefit comes in June, June benefit in July, etc. Also, since your birthday isn't on the 1st of the month, your payment date will be determined by your birth date. Payment dates are: - 2nd Wednesday: birth dates 1st-10th - 3rd Wednesday: birth dates 11th-20th - 4th Wednesday: birth dates 21st-31st So you'll probably get paid on the 3rd Wednesday of June for your May benefit. Mark your calendar!

•This is SO helpful! Thank you for explaining the payment schedule too. My birthday is on the 12th so looks like I'll be in that middle group getting paid on the 3rd Wednesday. I feel much better knowing I'll get May benefits (even if paid in June) rather than having to wait for June benefits paid in July. Retirement budget back on track!

The other commenters are correct, but I want to add some additional information. When you reach Full Retirement Age (FRA) during a month, you are entitled to your FULL benefit amount for that ENTIRE month, regardless of which day your FRA falls on. So in your case, you will receive your full May benefit (paid in June). The reason this sometimes confuses people is that the rules are different for the first month of entitlement if you claim BEFORE your FRA. In those early retirement cases, you must be eligible for the entire month to receive benefits for that month. Since you specifically selected "earliest month possible without a permanent age-related reduction" and you reach FRA in May, you've done everything correctly to ensure May is your first month of entitlement (with payment arriving in June).

•Thank you for that detailed explanation! That makes much more sense now. I'm glad I chose that specific option on the application. I was worried I might have messed something up by not clearly understanding when exactly the benefits would start.

I went through this NIGHTMARE trying to get my benefits started when my FRA hit in the middle of a month. The online information was confusing, and I couldn't get anyone on the phone at SSA despite calling DOZENS of times, getting disconnected, and spending hours on hold. Finally I discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which got me connected to a real SSA agent in under 20 minutes! They have this video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU The agent confirmed that I would get benefits for the entire month in which I reached FRA, even though my FRA date was on the 19th. Absolutely worth it to get that peace of mind directly from SSA instead of guessing.

•Does that service really work? I've been trying to get through to SSA for weeks about my survivor benefits! Might have to try it...

•Yes! It saved me so much frustration. I had been trying to call for 3 weeks straight with no luck before using it. The SSA agent I talked to was actually really helpful once I finally got through.

To give you the official explanation: Social Security benefits are paid on a monthly basis, and eligibility for a month's benefit is determined by your status on the first day of that month, with one important exception: when you reach Full Retirement Age (FRA) during a month. Per SSA regulations, when a person attains FRA during a month, they are deemed to have attained that age on the first day of the month for benefit calculation purposes. This special rule ensures you receive your full benefit amount for May 2025. If your FRA is May 14th, 2025: 1. You are entitled to full benefits for May 2025 2. Your May benefit will be paid in June 2025 3. Your payment date in June will be based on your birth date (likely the 3rd Wednesday since your birth date is on the 12th) The only potential issue would be if there's a mistake in your application regarding your FRA. Double-check your MySocialSecurity account to verify your benefit start date is correctly showing as May 2025.

One more tip that might help you - make sure all your direct deposit information is correct in your MySocialSecurity account! I had an issue where my first payment was delayed because I had an old bank account listed. Better to check now than have problems when your first payment is supposed to arrive.

•Great point! Just checked and thankfully my current bank info is in there correctly. Would have been awful to delay things because of something that simple!
