Social Security payment for non-citizen visa holder missing for July - anyone else affected?

My husband is from Colombia with a permanent resident visa who lived in the US since childhood. He's been receiving Social Security retirement benefits for about 15 months after contributing for nearly 35 years with his valid SSN. His payment normally arrives on the 3rd of each month, but yesterday nothing showed up in his bank account. I'm getting worried because we depend on that income for our mortgage payment that's due next week. Has anyone else experienced a delay with their July payment? Are other legal immigrants having this issue specifically? He's planning to call SSA today, but I know how impossible it is to get through. Just wondering if this is a widespread problem or if we need to be concerned about something with his specific situation.

Hey there! Happened to me too (and I'm a citizen) - my deposit that should've hit yesterday is MIA. Called SSA this morning and after 2 hours on hold, they said there's a processing delay affecting some direct deposits. They told me payments should post within 3 business days. I was worried it might be something about my account specifically, but sounds like it's affecting lots of people randomly. The rep I spoke with didn't mention anything about citizenship status affecting it, so I think your husband is probably caught in the same general delay.

Oh thank goodness it's not just us! My husband spent 3 hours trying to call this morning and couldn't get through at all. How did you manage to reach someone? Did they say what caused the delay?

Thanks for sharing that. It's a relief to hear it's happened before and eventually resolved. I wish they'd at least post something on their website when there are known delays!

I work with immigrant communities on Social Security issues, and I want to assure you that being a non-citizen with legal status should NOT affect his regular payment schedule once benefits have been approved. The payment system doesn't differentiate between citizens and legal permanent residents during regular payment processing. This sounds like a general processing delay that's affecting various recipients. What's concerning is that there's been no official announcement from SSA about it. I recommend he keep trying to contact them, but also check his MySocialSecurity account online if he has one - sometimes there are notices there that explain delays.

Thank you for this reassurance! We've been so worried it might be related to his immigration status. He does have a MySocialSecurity account but there are no alerts or messages about any delays. I'll make sure he keeps checking.

I haven't gotten mine either!!!! My payment is supposed to come on the 3rd too and NOTHING showed up. I'm FURIOUS because my rent is due and now I'll get hit with late fees!!! SSA doesn't care at all that people depend on these payments to LIVE. They should at LEAST warn us when payments will be late. I've called 15 TIMES today and can't get through to anyone! How is this acceptable???

I'm experiencing the same issue with my husband's payment - should have been deposited yesterday (the 3rd) and still nothing today. I spoke with our bank and they confirmed there's no pending deposit from Treasury. What's strange is that my payment (I get mine on the 2nd) arrived right on time. Our bills are due and this is incredibly stressful. I'm wondering if this might be related to the government fiscal year accounting processes? July is the start of a new fiscal quarter. Has anyone experienced this kind of delay at the beginning of other quarters before?

That's an interesting observation about the fiscal quarter. However, SSA payments shouldn't be affected by the fiscal calendar in that way. Their payment systems operate on a monthly schedule regardless of the quarter. I suspect this is more likely a technical processing issue or perhaps a banking holiday effect (though that wouldn't explain why some people received payments and others didn't).

After seeing several posts about payment delays, I called SSA through Claimyr (claimyr.com) and actually got through to a representative in about 15 minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours. The agent confirmed there's a processing delay affecting about 8% of direct deposits scheduled for the 3rd. Apparently it's a technical issue with the Treasury Department's Automated Clearing House (ACH) system, not specifically an SSA problem. They're estimating all delayed payments should post within 72 hours. The rep confirmed it has absolutely nothing to do with citizenship status - it's affecting people randomly based on which processing batch their payment was in. I was skeptical about paying for a call service, but after trying for days to reach SSA directly, the Claimyr service was worth it. You can see how it works in their demo video: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU

Thank you SO much for this information! 72 hours is still frustrating but at least now we know what's happening. I'll let my husband know. That call service sounds interesting - I've never heard of it before, but waiting for days to get through to SSA is just impossible when you're worried about missing payments.

my mom has the same problem (shes from philippines originally) no payment yet. but my uncle got his (hes citizen) so i was thinking maybe its for immigrants only? glad to hear its not that. still nothing in her account today tho

It's definitely not targeting immigrants. The SSA payment system doesn't filter based on citizenship once benefits are approved. It's more likely your mom and uncle are simply in different payment processing batches, and your mom's batch was affected by the technical issue while your uncle's wasn't.

UPDATE: My payment just posted this morning! So it was about 48 hours late. Check your accounts - hopefully your husband's payment has arrived too!

Just checked and YES! The payment came through about an hour ago! Such a relief. Thank you everyone for your help and reassurance. Now we can pay the mortgage without a late fee.
