Missing Social Security direct deposit when spouse's came through - possible fraud again?
Has anyone else experienced their SS payment not showing up when their spouse's did? My husband and I normally get our Social Security benefits deposited on the same day (3rd of month). His payment showed up in our bank account this morning but mine is nowhere to be found. I'm especially concerned because just two months ago, someone somehow changed my husband's direct deposit information and his payment went to some random account! It was a nightmare that took our Congressman's office getting involved to resolve. Should I be worried that something similar is happening to my payment now? Should I wait a few days before panicking or call SSA immediately? The last time this happened, we were told there was no fraud alert system despite what their website claims!

•Oh no, that's exactly what I was afraid of! Did your neighbor ever get her money back? I've been trying to call for the past hour but can't get through - just endless hold music then disconnected.

This is definitely concerning given your previous experience with fraud. I recommend three immediate steps: 1) Log into your MySocialSecurity account to check if your direct deposit information has been changed, 2) Contact your bank to see if they show any pending deposits from Treasury, and 3) Call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 as early as possible tomorrow morning. Since you've already experienced fraud, make sure to mention this is a potential second incident when you call - that should escalate your case. Also, consider placing a freeze on your credit reports if you haven't already, as this could indicate broader identity theft.

•Thank you for the detailed advice! I just checked my MySocialSecurity account and thankfully my direct deposit info still shows our correct account. The bank doesn't see any pending deposits either. I'll definitely call first thing tomorrow morning and mention the previous fraud incident. I hadn't thought about freezing our credit reports - will do that tonight!

I went through something similar last year, kept calling SSA but couldn't get through. After 2 days of frustration, I tried Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an agent in under 10 minutes. They have this service that basically waits on hold for you then calls you when an agent is on the line. Saved me hours of hold time! You can see how it works in their video: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU - With your situation and the previous fraud, I wouldn't wait around hoping it resolves itself. The agent I spoke with was able to see immediately what happened to my payment.

Sometimes they stagger the deposits even for same day recipients. My wife and I get ours on the 2nd but hers often shows up 6-8 hours after mine. Check again tomorrow before panicking.

•Thanks for sharing that - I didn't realize they might stagger them even within the same household. It's been about 12 hours now since his appeared, but I'll try to be patient until tomorrow morning before assuming the worst.

Based on my experience working with Social Security beneficiaries, this could be one of several things: 1) A processing delay on SSA's end, which happens occasionally but resolves within 1-3 business days, 2) A potential direct deposit issue that needs immediate attention, or 3) A payment suspension due to an unreported change. If your husband's payment arrived normally, the first scenario is most likely. However, given your previous fraud experience, it's worth treating this as urgent. The Treasury Department has enhanced their fraud detection systems recently, which sometimes causes legitimate payments to be delayed for additional verification. You should call SSA to document this issue, but also contact Treasury's Direct Express customer service at 1-888-741-1115 to see if they have any information about a held payment.

•Thank you for this detailed explanation! I didn't know about the Treasury Department's enhanced fraud detection possibly causing delays - that actually gives me hope this might not be fraud. I'll try the Treasury number you provided while also continuing to try reaching SSA.

SSA IS THE WORST!!! They "lost" my direct deposit THREE TIMES last year!!! Each time they swore they'd fix it and put notes in my account but IT KEPT HAPPENING!!! When I finally got to speak to a supervisor they admitted there was some "glitch" in their system that was randomly flagging accounts for "review" and holding payments without telling anyone!!! No apology, nothing!!! Check if your account was randomly flagged for review - that's what they told me after I spent WEEKS trying to get answers!!!

•Oh my gosh, that's awful! Did they eventually fix the glitch for your account? I'm starting to wonder if that's what happened to us before with my husband's account. The SSA never gave us a clear explanation of how someone was able to change his direct deposit info.

Just wanted to follow up - were you able to get through to SSA? Did your payment come through or did you have to use that Claimyr service I mentioned? Really hope it was just a delay and not fraud again.

•I actually did try that Claimyr service you mentioned because I got disconnected 3 more times trying on my own! Got through to an agent who confirmed my payment was flagged for 'verification' because of the previous fraud incident. They're expediting it now and said it should appear in 2-3 business days. Thank you so much for the recommendation - would have taken forever to get this resolved otherwise!

•Wait, what?? They thought she was dead because of a doctor's appointment? That's absolutely bizarre! Sometimes I wonder how these systems even function at all...

Now that you've confirmed your payment was flagged for verification, I recommend documenting everything about this incident. Keep a record of who you spoke with, what they said, and any confirmation numbers they provided. If this happens again, having this documentation will help expedite resolution. Also, since you've now experienced two unusual payment issues, consider setting up a separate bank account that only receives your Social Security payments - this makes it easier to track issues and can provide an extra layer of security by keeping these payments separate from your regular accounts.

•That's excellent advice about keeping a separate account just for Social Security deposits. I'm definitely going to set that up this week. And yes, I've started keeping detailed notes about everything - names, dates, confirmation numbers. Hopefully we won't have any more issues, but at least we'll be better prepared if we do.
