How to update SSA direct deposit banking info? Tips needed!

Hey everyone, I need to update my banking info for direct deposit with SSA. Has anyone done this recently? Any tips or things I should know before I start the process? I'm a bit nervous about messing it up and delaying my payments.

I just went through this last month. It's not too bad, but there are a few things to keep in mind: 1. Make sure you have your new bank account info ready (routing number and account number). 2. You can do it online through your my Social Security account if you have one set up. 3. If you prefer to do it by phone, be prepared for a long wait time. 4. They might ask for additional verification, so have your ID and SSN card handy. 5. The change usually takes effect on the next payment cycle, so plan accordingly. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you so much for the detailed response! This is really helpful. I do have a my Social Security account, so I'll probably try to do it online. Do you know how long it took for your changes to be processed?

No problem! Happy to help. For me, the online change was processed pretty quickly - I think it took about 3-4 business days. But they say it can take up to 2 weeks, so don't panic if it's not immediate.

Just wanna add that I did mine over the phone and it took foreverrr to get through to someone. If u can do it online, def go that route!

ugh, i tried to update my banking info last year and it was such a headache. the website kept crashing on me and when i finally got through on the phone, they told me i needed to come in person with like 50 forms of ID 🙄 hope it goes smoother for you!

Same here! The SSA website is so frustrating sometimes. It's like they're stuck in the 90s or something 💀

Yall need to chill. The website works fine most of the time. Just gotta be patient and try during off-peak hours.

Pro tip: if you're having trouble getting through to someone at SSA, I found this awesome service called Claimyr. They dial the phone menu, stay on hold, and then connect you when a live agent picks up. It costs $20 but saved me hours of frustration. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

Eli Wang

I'm skeptical. How do we know this isn't just some scam to get our info?

I get the skepticism, but I promise it's legit. Used it twice now and it worked like a charm both times. They don't ask for any personal info beyond your phone number to call you back.

$20 to save hours of hold time? Sign me up! 🙌

word of advice: double check EVERYTHING before you submit any changes. i accidently put in the wrong routing number and my payment got all messed up. took weeks to sort out 😫

Has anyone had experience updating banking info for someone else? My grandma needs to update hers but she's not tech savvy at all.

You'll need to be her designated representative. There's a form for that - I think it's called SSA-1696. Fill that out first, then you can help her make the changes.

Thanks for the info! I'll look into that form. Appreciate the help 👍

Nah, just someone who doesn't like unnecessary negativity. But you do you, I guess.

Quick question - does anyone know if changing your direct deposit info affects your payment date? I rely on getting paid on a specific day each month.

In my experience, it didn't change the payment date. But it might delay the first payment to the new account by a few days while they verify everything.

That's good to know, thanks! I was worried it might mess up my whole payment schedule. A few days delay I can handle, but I definitely don't want to miss a whole month or anything like that.

I updated mine about 6 months ago and it was actually pretty straightforward! Here's what worked for me: - Do it online through my Social Security if possible - way faster than calling - Have all your banking info written down beforehand (routing number, account number, bank name) - Log in during off-peak hours (early morning or late evening) to avoid website issues - Take a screenshot of the confirmation page once you submit - Keep checking your account for the next few payments to make sure everything went through correctly The whole process took me maybe 10 minutes online, and my next payment went to the new account without any issues. Don't stress too much about it - they deal with these requests all the time! Just double-check all your numbers before hitting submit.
