Can't post with my name on Social Security forum - forced anonymous posting only?

For the past few weeks, I've noticed something weird when trying to post questions about my Social Security disability benefits. The system is ONLY letting me post anonymously! I used to have the option to use my regular username, but that choice has completely disappeared. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm worried the SSA administrators might have restricted my account somehow. I haven't posted anything inappropriate - just normal questions about my SSDI application timeline and some benefit calculation questions. Is this happening to anyone else or just me? Any idea how to fix this?

same here!! thought it was just my computer being weird. been trying to post about my retirement benefits for like 2 weeks now and can only do it anonymous

Oh wow, so it's not just me then! Have you tried contacting anyone about it? I'm wondering if it's a site-wide change they made without telling us.

This is actually a recent system update they rolled out. According to the SSA community guidelines update (posted about 3 weeks ago), they're transitioning all benefit-specific discussions to anonymous-only posting to better protect personally identifiable information. The reasoning is that too many people were accidentally sharing their claim numbers, last 4 of SSN, and other sensitive data in public posts. General discussions about SSA policies should still allow username posting, but anything related to individual benefit situations now defaults to anonymous posting.

Thank you for explaining! I completely missed that announcement. That makes sense for security reasons, but I wish they'd made it more obvious with a pop-up or something when the change happened.

I don't think that's right. I just posted yesterday about my survivors benefits using my regular username. Maybe it depends on which section of the forum you're posting in? Or maybe its account specific?

You're right - it's section-specific. The SSDI/disability and SSI sections were converted first as they tend to have more sensitive medical information. The retirement and survivors benefits sections are scheduled for the anonymous transition next month according to the forum roadmap. General discussions will remain username-based.

The REAL reason they're doing this is so they can hide how badly they're treating people!!!! I've been waiting 16 MONTHS for my disability hearing and they don't want people seeing my username posting about it over and over. It's CENSORSHIP plain and simple. They don't want journalists seeing how many of us are suffering with these ridiculous wait times.

While I understand your frustration with the wait times (which are definitely a serious problem), I don't think the anonymous posting change is part of a conspiracy. I've worked with SSA systems for years, and this is most likely genuinely about data protection. I've seen too many instances where people accidentally overshared personal information in public forums and then couldn't get it removed fast enough.

FYI - if you're trying to actually contact the SSA about your specific case rather than just discuss on the forum, anonymous posting won't matter either way. You need to speak directly with an agent. I was struggling with the same thing last month - kept getting disconnected or waiting for hours. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual person at SSA within about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU. Saved me from having to keep calling back day after day.

Thanks for the tip. I'm not worried about contacting SSA directly right now - I was just confused about the posting change. But I'll definitely keep that service in mind for when I need to call about my actual application status next month!

Try logging out completely and clearing your browser cookies, then log back in. Sometimes the system gets stuck in a weird state. That fixed a similar issue for me where I couldn't access certain forum features a few months ago.

I actually tried that yesterday - cleared cookies, tried different browsers, even used my phone instead of my computer. Same result everywhere - only anonymous posting available. But now I understand it's an intentional system change based on what others have explained. Mystery solved!

hey quick question thats off topic but since ur applying for SSDI - did they make u wait the full 5 months before your first payment? my doctor said sometimes they waive that for certain conditions

Yes, unfortunately they made me wait the full 5 months. From what I understand, the waiting period is pretty much mandatory for everyone on SSDI. I think your doctor might be confusing it with the 24-month Medicare waiting period, which can sometimes be waived for certain conditions like ALS. But the 5-month SSDI waiting period applies to almost everyone.
