TWC payment suddenly blocked - 'more information needed' after first check received

I'm totally confused right now. I got approved for Texas unemployment last month after getting laid off from my healthcare admin job. They processed everything and I received my first payment via check in the mail last week (about $485). Yesterday was my regular filing day for my payment request and I logged in to file like normal, but got this weird message saying 'your request cannot be processed' and that they 'need additional information' before processing my payment request. They didn't specify what information they need! Has anyone experienced this sudden block after already getting approved and receiving a payment? I tried calling TWC but of course got the busy signal every time. My rent is due next week and I was counting on this payment...

This happens more often than you'd think. TWC might be investigating something about your work separation or they might have questions about your work search activities. The most common reason is that your former employer responded to the initial claim with new information. Check your correspondence inbox on the TWC portal - there's probably a determination letter or questionnaire waiting for you that explains exactly what they need.

Thank you! I didn't even think to check the correspondence section. I just did and you're right - there's a letter dated 2 days ago asking about why I didn't report a part-time job I had for 3 weeks in December. I completely forgot about that since it was just temporary holiday work! Now I need to respond to this ASAP.

Ugh that's awful! Did you have to do an appeal? My situation is slightly different but I'm worried they'll make me pay back the money I already got.

The system flagged something in your claim that requires manual review. This is actually very common after the first payment - it's like they do a secondary verification. You need to talk to an actual TWC agent to resolve this, but as you discovered, getting through on the phone is nearly impossible. I was stuck in the same situation last month and tried calling for DAYS with no luck. Then I found this service called Claimyr that got me through to a TWC agent in about 20 minutes. Basically they keep calling for you until they get through, then connect you. Saved me weeks of stress. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh

Thank you for the suggestion! I found the letter in my correspondence section but still have questions about how to respond. I might need to use that service to talk to someone directly. I'll check out the video.

They do this ALL THE TIME!!! The TWC system is SO BROKEN!!! They approve you, send one check, then suddenly "need more information" when they already HAD all the information. Meanwhile we're all expected to pay bills while they take WEEKS to sort out their mistakes. I've been through this THREE TIMES during my claim period. Each time it was something different. Just wait til they hit you with an "overpayment notice" for THEIR ERROR!!!

While I understand your frustration, it's important to note that this is usually not an error, but part of their ongoing eligibility verification process. TWC is required by law to investigate any new information they receive about a claim, even after initial approval. They have to ensure ongoing eligibility and prevent fraud, which unfortunately means legitimate claimants sometimes experience delays.

To clarify what others have said, there are a few common reasons you might see this message after receiving your first payment: 1. Work search verification - TWC sometimes randomly selects claimants to verify their 3 required work search activities 2. Employer protest - Your former employer has 14 days to contest your claim, which sometimes happens after the first payment is issued 3. Unreported earnings - If the system detected earnings you didn't report (through quarterly wage crossmatching) 4. ID verification issues - Sometimes a secondary verification is triggered The correspondence section in your TWC portal will have the specific reason and instructions. If you don't see anything there, you likely need to speak with a TWC representative directly. Complete any questionnaires promptly and continue requesting payments on your regular schedule even if they're not paid immediately.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! It was #3 - they found a part-time job I had in December that I honestly forgot about (it was only 3 weeks of holiday work). I found the letter in my correspondence inbox. I'm filling out their questionnaire now. Do you know if I'll still get my payment after I submit the information, or will it be delayed?

Since you found the correspondence about the unreported earnings, here's what will happen next: 1. After you submit the requested information about your December part-time job, TWC will determine if those earnings affect your eligibility for the payment period in question. 2. If the earnings were outside your current benefit period, they'll likely release your payment after reviewing your response, though there might be a 5-7 day processing delay. 3. If the earnings were during your current benefit period but under your weekly benefit amount, they'll adjust your payment accordingly. 4. Continue to request payments on your regular schedule, even while this issue is pending. And don't worry too much about the previous payment - as long as you're honest in your response now, they typically understand that people sometimes forget short-term jobs, especially if they were before your current claim period.

Thank you so much! That's reassuring. The part-time job was in December and my unemployment claim didn't start until February, so hopefully it won't affect my current benefits. I'll keep requesting payments on schedule as you suggested.

i kinda skipped some weeks of filin and wen i tried to go back they said the same thing to me... needed more info... turns out i messed up the dates or somethin and they thought i was workin when i wasnt. had to do this whole appeal thing and it was a nightmare tbh. took like 5 weeks to fix.

This is different from OP's situation. Missing payment request dates often triggers a more complex appeal process, while responding to an information request like OP has is typically resolved more quickly if addressed promptly.

This happened to me two months ago! Don't stress too much - it's annoying but fixable. After you submit the information they requested, call TWC first thing in the morning (like 7:58am, right before they open at 8am) and keep trying for about 30 minutes. I got through that way and the agent was able to expedite my case review. Had my payment within 3 days after that.

Thanks for the tip! I'll try calling right when they open tomorrow. Did you have to do anything special when you got through, or did you just explain the situation?

Just explain that you already submitted the requested information and ask if they can expedite the review. Have your claim ID and the correspondence number ready. The key is getting a person on the phone - after that it's usually pretty straightforward. Good luck!

Yes, I've been doing all my work search activities every week and documenting them carefully. I found out it was actually about a short-term job I had before my unemployment claim that they somehow found in their system.

Just wanted to follow up - were you able to get your issue resolved? The same thing happened to my brother-in-law last month, and it took about 10 days after he submitted the additional information before his payment was released. Did calling in help speed things up?

Yes! I used that Claimyr service you recommended and got through to TWC yesterday. The agent confirmed they received my information about the part-time job and said since it was before my claim period, it won't affect my current benefits. She expedited the review and my payment should be processed in the next 48 hours. Thanks for your help!
