TWC overpayment paid but still requesting weekly benefits - Will they take money twice?

Just dealt with an overpayment situation with TWC and I'm confused about what happens next. I had a $100 overpayment that I paid directly to TWC today through their online portal. I received a confirmation number for the payment and everything. But right after paying it, I went ahead and requested my weekly benefits as usual. Now I'm worried - will TWC still automatically deduct that $100 overpayment from my upcoming benefit payment even though I already paid it separately? I don't want them taking the money twice! Has anyone dealt with this before? How long does it take for their system to recognize I've already repaid the overpayment?

Oh no, that's exactly what I'm worried about! Did you call them before they took it twice or after?

Their system typically updates overnight, but the safest approach is to call TWC directly to confirm they've processed your repayment. Once you have paid an overpayment and have a confirmation number, that debt should be cleared in their system within 1-2 business days. However, if their automated system already flagged your account for recoupment before you made the payment, they might still take it from your next payment request. Save that confirmation number and all documentation. If they do take it twice, you'll need to contact them to request a refund of the duplicate payment.

Thank you for explaining that! I'll definitely call them tomorrow morning to make sure everything is documented properly.

I had this EXACT problem in January!! They absolutely took the money TWICE from me and it was a NIGHTMARE getting it fixed. The payment system and the benefits system don't talk to each other properly. Save EVERYTHING and take screenshots of your payment confirmation. You're going to need proof!

This is a common issue unfortunately. The TWC systems don't always communicate well between departments. If you call, make sure to ask them to place a note in your file about the payment you already made. That can sometimes prevent the double deduction.

My next payment should come Friday if everything processes normally. I made the payment around noon today.

I worked through this exact situation a few months ago. Here's what happens: TWC processes overpayment receipts and benefit requests on different schedules. The issue is that even though you paid the overpayment, that information might not be reflected in the benefits processing system in time. Your best option is to call TWC directly at 800-939-6631 to confirm they've recorded your payment. But as many of us know, getting through to a TWC representative can be nearly impossible right now. I ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to TWC quickly. They have a service that helps you bypass the busy signals and actually get to speak with someone. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh Once I got through to a representative, they were able to flag my account to prevent the double deduction. Definitely worth trying to get ahead of this before your payment processes.

I've been trying to call all morning with no luck. I'll check out that service - at this point I just need to talk to an actual person at TWC before they process my payment!

This happened to me! They took the overpayment twice and I had to wait for my next payment cycle to get the money back. Try to get through to a representative before your payment processes on Friday. The TWC benefits system and payment system aren't fully integrated - the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing sometimes. If they do take it twice, keep calling until you reach someone who can help. Make sure to reference both your payment confirmation number and your payment request date in every conversation.

When I had an overpayment last year it was a different amount but similar situation. I paid it online and then requested my benefits the next day. They still took the money from my benefits payment! I called and they said since I paid it myself they would refund me but it would take 7-10 business days. So frustrating because that money was for my electric bill and I had to scramble to cover it. If I were you I'd call them tomorrow morning as early as possible to get it sorted before they process your payment request. Good luck!

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm definitely going to try calling first thing tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed I can reach someone!

Just to add a different perspective - I had the exact opposite happen. I paid an overpayment and then requested benefits the same day, and they properly recognized my payment. This was about 2 months ago. So maybe they've fixed some of these system issues? I think it might depend on timing and which TWC office processes your claim.

You got LUCKY!! Their systems are still a mess for most people. I'm still fighting with them over a double payment from 6 weeks ago! 😡

Based on everyone's experiences here, I suggest taking these steps: 1. Call TWC first thing tomorrow at 800-939-6631 2. If you can't get through, try again during off-peak hours (usually right after lunch) 3. Have your confirmation number ready 4. Ask the representative to: - Verify they see your overpayment payment in the system - Flag your account to prevent a second deduction - Document the call in your case notes - Provide you with a reference number for the call If they do end up taking the payment twice, you'll need to go through their refund process, which typically takes 1-2 weeks. The good news is that they do eventually correct these issues, but it can be frustrating waiting for the resolution.

Thank you so much for these detailed steps! This is exactly what I needed to know. I'll follow this process tomorrow and update everyone on what happens.
