TWC sending my approved benefits to overpayment - how to reverse this?

I finally got my unemployment approved back in March 2025 after 3 weeks of waiting, but I just noticed the payments are showing as 'overpayment' in my TWC account. I don't understand how this is happening since I was deemed eligible and got a determination letter confirming this. I've received about $4,300 so far but it's all marked as overpayment! I did everything right - reported all my work history correctly, did all my payment requests on time, and completed my work searches every week. Has anyone else had this problem where benefits you're eligible for somehow get categorized as overpayment? What's the fastest way to fix this so I don't have to repay money I legitimately qualified for? My anxiety is through the roof thinking they might try to take this money back!

This is fairly common with TWC right now. There are a couple of reasons this could be happening: 1) There might be conflicting information between what you reported and what your employer reported, 2) There could be a system glitch where your payments were incorrectly labeled, or 3) There might have been a wage audit that flagged your account. Don't panic! You need to contact TWC directly to resolve this. Request an appeal of the overpayment determination within 14 days of receiving any notice. Make sure to gather all your determination letters, payment request confirmations, and work search records as evidence.

Thank you for the response. I never got a formal overpayment notice though - it just shows up that way in my account summary. Do I still need to file an appeal or is there another way to fix this? I'm afraid if I wait for a notice it'll be too late.

did u report all ur income correctly? cuz i got hit with an overpayment too but it was bcuz i messed up reporting some side gig money. if u didnt report somethin they'll definitely catch it later and mark everything as overpayment

Yes, I reported everything accurately! I was laid off completely from my job at the furniture store - no side income at all. That's why I'm so confused about why it's showing up as overpayment when I was approved fair and square.

This is a technical issue with the TWC system that's been happening a lot lately. What you're seeing is likely just a display error in your account portal. The payments are probably correctly processed in their system, but showing incorrectly in your online view. You should immediately call TWC to have them check the status in their main system and correct the display issue. However, if it's not just a display error, you'll need to request a formal review. Be sure to specifically mention that you never received an overpayment determination letter. They're required to send one before taking any recovery action. This actually works in your favor because they can't start collections without proper notification.

This makes me feel better! I was hoping it might just be a system error. I'll try calling them right away tomorrow morning. I've been getting busy signals for days though. Hopefully I can get through.

OMG the EXACT same thing happened to me!! It took me SIX calls to TWC before I got an agent who knew how to fix it. The first few agents I talked to just kept transferring me around and nobody knew what to do. It was so frustrating!!! Apparently there was some glitch in their system that was affecting people who had their claims approved in March. The agent had to submit some kind of internal ticket to fix the display issue.

Six calls?? That sounds like a nightmare! Did you just keep calling until you got through or was there a better time of day to reach them?

Try using Claimyr to get through to TWC faster! I was in your exact situation and kept getting busy signals for 2 weeks straight. I found this service at claimyr.com and they got me connected to a TWC agent in about 25 minutes instead of spending days redialing. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh. The agent I spoke with was able to look at my account and see it was just a display issue in my portal, not an actual overpayment. Saved me so much stress!

Does that service actually work? Sounds too good to be true honestly. I've been trying to get through to TWC for DAYS about a similar issue.

It worked for me! I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for so long. They don't answer for you or anything - they just help you skip the busy signal part and get in the queue to talk to a real TWC agent yourself. Worth it to not spend hours hitting redial.

Have you checked if there are any new messages in your correspondence inbox on the TWC portal? Sometimes they send determination letters there without mailing a physical copy. Look for anything with "OVERPAYMENT" or "DETERMINATION" in the subject line. If you find one, READ IT CAREFULLY before doing anything else! The reason for the overpayment should be explained there. I had a similar issue last year, and it turned out my former employer contested my claim AFTER I was initially approved. TWC reversed their decision and marked everything as overpayment. I had to appeal with evidence that I was eligible all along.

I just double checked my correspondence inbox and there's nothing about overpayment in there! Just the original approval letter and the payment request confirmations. That's why I'm so confused - they approved me but the money still shows as overpayment in my account summary.

THE TWC SYSTEM IS COMPLETELY BROKEN!!! I've had nothing but problems since day 1. First they denied me, then approved me, then said I had an overpayment, then fixed it, then another overpayment showed up! Their computer system probably dates back to the 1990s and can't handle basic functions. You'll probably have to call them 20 times before you get someone who knows what they're doing. And good luck getting through - I set my alarm for 6:55am just to start calling at 7am sharp and STILL got busy signals!

That sounds absolutely terrible! I hope my situation isn't that complicated. Did you eventually get it resolved or are you still fighting with them?

I want to add something important: take screenshots of your TWC account showing the overpayment status right now. If this is a system error, having documentation of exactly what you're seeing could be helpful. Also, while you're working to resolve this, DO NOT stop submitting your payment requests if you're still unemployed. Continue following all requirements even while this issue is being fixed.

0 coins

That's great advice, thank you! I just took screenshots of everything in my account. And yes, I'm definitely continuing with my payment requests and work searches in the meantime.

After speaking with TWC, if they confirm it's an actual overpayment (not just a display error), you have three options: 1. File an appeal within 14 days of any determination letter 2. Request a waiver of the overpayment if it wasn't your fault 3. Set up a repayment plan if options 1 and 2 don't work For option 2, you'll need to complete Form E-230W (Waiver of Unemployment Benefits Overpayment). You need to demonstrate that repayment would cause financial hardship AND that the overpayment wasn't your fault. Keep in mind a waiver isn't guaranteed, but it's worth trying if you truly were eligible and didn't misreport anything.

Thank you for explaining all my options. I'm hoping it's just a display error, but if not, I'll definitely appeal first and then try for the waiver if needed. I just don't understand how I could have an overpayment when I was eligible and reported everything correctly!

Update on my similar situation - I FINALLY got it fixed! Turns out a bunch of us who filed in March had our accounts flagged incorrectly in their system during some maintenance thing they did. The TWC rep had to submit a 'portal correction request' (those were the exact words she used). It took about 4 business days after that for my account to show correctly. So make sure you specifically ask if they can submit a portal correction request for your account!

This is so helpful! I'll specifically ask about the 'portal correction request' when I get through to them. Did they have to transfer you to a specific department to get this done?

They transferred me to what they called the 'benefits control' team. The first line representatives couldn't do it themselves. Make sure you don't let them just say 'we'll look into it' - keep asking until they transfer you to someone who can actually fix it!

I've helped several people with this exact issue. If you're still having trouble getting through to TWC by phone, you can also visit your local Workforce Solutions office in person. They can sometimes access the TWC system and help resolve display issues like this. Bring your ID and all documentation related to your claim. The in-person staff often have ways to escalate issues more effectively than you can on your own.

I didn't even think about going in person! There's a Workforce Solutions office about 20 minutes from me. I might try that if I can't get through on the phone by the end of the week. Thank you for the suggestion!

UPDATE: I finally got through to TWC this morning! You all were right - it was just a display error in my account. The representative confirmed that my benefits are properly approved and I don't actually have an overpayment. They submitted what they called a 'portal correction request' to fix how it appears in my account. They said it should update within 3-5 business days. Such a relief! Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions!

Great news! This is exactly why it's so important to contact TWC directly when you see something concerning in your account. These display errors are fairly common but can cause unnecessary stress. Keep an eye on your account over the next week to make sure the correction goes through properly.

So glad you got this resolved! This is exactly what happened to me back in January - same display error, same "portal correction request" fix. It's frustrating how these system glitches can cause so much panic when you're already dealing with unemployment stress. For anyone else reading this who might have the same issue, the key is definitely to keep calling until you get someone who knows about these technical problems. Not all the representatives are familiar with the portal correction process, so you might need to be transferred a few times. Thanks for updating us with the resolution - it'll help others who search for this problem!

Wow, what a rollercoaster this whole thread has been! I'm so relieved to see you got it resolved, Noah! I'm actually dealing with something similar right now - my account is showing weird status updates that don't match what I was told over the phone. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been incredibly helpful. I think I'm going to try the Claimyr service that Fiona mentioned to get through faster, and if that doesn't work I'll visit my local Workforce Solutions office. It's amazing how many people are dealing with these system glitches - TWC really needs to get their technology updated! Thanks to everyone who shared their solutions and tips. This is exactly the kind of real-world advice you can't get from the official TWC website.

I'm so glad this thread exists! I just discovered a similar issue in my account today where payments are showing incorrectly, and reading through everyone's experiences here has been a lifesaver. It's reassuring to know this is a known system problem and not something I did wrong. I'm definitely going to try calling first thing tomorrow morning and specifically ask about the "portal correction request" that Xan mentioned. If I can't get through, I'll check out that Claimyr service too. Thanks to everyone for sharing their solutions - this community is amazing for helping each other navigate TWC's confusing system!

This thread has been incredibly helpful! I'm dealing with a similar situation where my TWC account is showing confusing status information that doesn't match what I was initially told. It's such a relief to see that these system glitches are common and fixable. I love how this community comes together to share real solutions - the specific tips about asking for a "portal correction request" and getting transferred to the "benefits control" team are exactly the kind of detailed advice you need when dealing with TWC's complex system. For anyone else reading this who might be in a similar situation, this thread is proof that persistence pays off and that these display errors can be resolved! Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and congratulations Noah on getting it fixed!

I'm jumping in as someone who's been lurking on this community for a while but finally had to create an account after reading this thread! This exact situation happened to my neighbor last month - the overpayment display error after being legitimately approved. What really strikes me is how consistent the solution has been across everyone's experiences: the "portal correction request" seems to be the magic phrase that gets results. I'm bookmarking this thread because the step-by-step advice here is better than anything I've found on TWC's official resources. It's frustrating that we have to become experts in their system quirks just to get what we're entitled to, but I'm grateful for communities like this where people share real solutions. Noah, thanks for updating us with the resolution - that follow-through helps so many future people who will find this thread when searching for the same problem!

This thread is such a goldmine of information! I'm currently dealing with a TWC issue myself (different from the overpayment display error but equally frustrating) and seeing how everyone rallied to help Noah figure out his situation really gives me hope. The fact that multiple people experienced the same "portal correction request" solution shows this is definitely a systemic issue with their March 2025 processing. What I find most valuable is how specific everyone got with the details - knowing to ask for the "benefits control" team and not accepting vague "we'll look into it" responses is the kind of insider knowledge you can't get anywhere else. TWC's system clearly has some serious technical issues, but this community's collective problem-solving is amazing. Noah, congrats on getting it resolved, and thanks for posting the update - that kind of closure is so helpful for future readers dealing with similar issues!
