TWC caseworker just called - how long until approval after this step?

Got a surprise call from my TWC caseworker today about my unemployment claim. She asked a bunch of questions about my last job and why I was let go (company downsizing). She mentioned she needed to 'verify some details' but didn't say much else. Anyone know how long it usually takes to get approved after this phone interview? I'm on week 5 since filing and getting really anxious about bills. Is the caseworker call a good sign that things are moving forward?

usually means ur getting close!! i got my determination letter like 4 days after my call

That's a relief to hear! Did you have to do anything else after the call or did they just process everything without you?

The timing varies quite a bit depending on your specific case details. After the caseworker call, most people see a determination within 7-10 business days, though I've seen some get approved in as little as 3 days. The call is definitely a good sign - it means your claim is actively being worked on rather than sitting in the queue. Make sure you keep requesting payments every two weeks even though you haven't been approved yet. If approved, they'll pay all eligible weeks retroactively. Also check your correspondence inbox on the TWC portal daily - that's where your determination letter will appear first.

Thank you! That's really helpful to know. I've been requesting payments but wasn't sure if that was the right thing to do. I'll keep checking my inbox.

My caseworker called me THREE TIMES and I still got denied!! The whole system is a joke. They make it sound like everything is fine and then BAM - denied for some technicality they never mentioned during any of the calls. Don't get your hopes up too much.

This isn't necessarily true for everyone. The caseworker call is usually just fact-finding. Whether you get approved depends on the specific details of your separation from employment. Company downsizing (as OP mentioned) is typically a qualifying reason for benefits, unlike quitting without good cause or misconduct terminations.

When my caseworker called, it took exactly 6 business days to get my determination letter. I was approved but then had issues with payment requests showing $0. Turns out they needed additional wage verification that wasn't mentioned in the call. What finally helped was getting through to an actual agent using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They have this service that gets you through the TWC phone system without waiting for hours. Watched their demo video (https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh) and was talking to someone at TWC within 30 minutes. The agent cleared up my wage issue right away, and my payments started processing the next day.

Yes, it worked for me! I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for days with the regular number. The agent I spoke with was able to see notes from my caseworker call and explained exactly what was happening with my claim.

Ugh that's what I'm worried about! Even if I get approved, I'm concerned about how long until actual payment. Did they at least back-pay you for the weeks you were waiting?

Just to add some additional context: after the caseworker call, they need to: 1. Complete their fact-finding 2. Make a determination on your eligibility 3. Send the determination letter (check your correspondence inbox) 4. Process any previously requested payment weeks if approved If your separation reason is straightforward (like company downsizing), this usually happens faster. If there are any disputes with your employer or complicated separation details, it can take longer. The fact that they called you to verify details is generally a good sign that your claim is moving through the process.

This is super helpful - thank you for breaking it down! The separation was pretty straightforward so hopefully that speeds things up. My former employer confirmed it was a position elimination due to budget cuts.

In my experience working with TWC claims, after the caseworker interview, a determination is typically made within 5-10 business days. However, remember that the timeline can vary based on: - How many claims TWC is processing at the moment - Whether your employer contests any details - If additional verification is needed - Any discrepancies in your work history Keep up with your payment requests every two weeks. If approved, you'll receive payment for all eligible weeks you've requested. Make sure you're completing your work search activities too (minimum 3 per week) and documenting them properly. Even before approval, you need to meet these requirements to receive benefits for each week.

do they actually check your work search activities? ive been applying to places but not keeping detailed records

Yes, they absolutely can and do verify work search activities, often through random audits. If you're selected for an audit and can't provide documentation, you could lose benefits and potentially have to pay back any weeks where you couldn't prove your search activities. Start keeping detailed records immediately - job title, company, application date, contact information, and application method for each one.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful responses! I'm feeling a bit more optimistic now. I've been doing my work searches and keeping records, and I'll definitely keep requesting payments every two weeks. I'll update this thread once I hear something. Hoping for that determination letter soon!

Fingers crossed for you! The caseworker call is definitely a positive step. I went through something similar last year - got laid off due to company restructuring and had my caseworker interview on a Wednesday. Got my approval letter the following Tuesday (6 business days). One thing that helped me was checking the TWC website multiple times a day, not just for the determination letter but also to make sure all my information was still showing correctly. Sometimes there are system glitches that can delay processing. Also, if you haven't already, make sure your direct deposit info is set up properly so when payments do start, they go through smoothly. The waiting is the worst part, but it sounds like you're doing everything right! Keep us posted on how it goes.

This is really encouraging to hear! 6 business days sounds reasonable. I hadn't thought about checking for system glitches - that's a great tip. My direct deposit is already set up thankfully. The waiting really is brutal when you're stressed about bills, but hearing success stories like yours helps a lot. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I'm in a similar boat - filed my claim about 3 weeks ago and still waiting to hear anything. It's reassuring to see that the caseworker call is actually a good sign that things are moving! I keep checking my inbox obsessively but nothing yet. Did your caseworker give you any sense of timeline during the call, or did they just say they'd be in touch? Also wondering if there are certain days of the week they typically send out determination letters or if it's random. The financial stress is real when you're waiting this long!

I totally understand that financial stress - it's so hard to focus on anything else when bills are piling up! My caseworker didn't give me a specific timeline, just said they were "working on it" which wasn't super helpful. From what I've seen in this thread and other posts, it seems like determination letters can come any day of the week - I don't think there's a pattern. The waiting really is the hardest part, especially when you're already dealing with job loss stress. Hang in there! @Carmen Vega

I'm currently going through the exact same thing! Got my caseworker call last Thursday and have been checking my inbox like crazy ever since. It's so nerve-wracking but reading everyone's experiences here is really helpful. My caseworker was actually pretty thorough - asked about my job duties, the layoff process, and whether I received any severance. She seemed satisfied with my answers which I'm hoping is a good sign. Has anyone noticed if the determination letters tend to come at a specific time of day? I keep refreshing the correspondence section but maybe I'm being too obsessive about it. The bills aren't going to wait though, so I totally get the anxiety about timing. Thanks for starting this thread - it's nice to know we're not alone in this process!

I don't think there's a specific time pattern for determination letters - mine came through around 2pm on a Tuesday but I've seen others mention getting theirs in the morning or evening. The obsessive checking is totally normal though! I was doing the same thing. It sounds like your caseworker was being thorough which is usually good - they want to make sure they have all the facts straight before making their determination. The fact that she seemed satisfied with your responses is definitely encouraging. Hang in there, hopefully we'll both hear something soon! The financial stress while waiting is no joke.

I went through this exact same process about 2 months ago! Got the caseworker call on a Monday morning and she asked similar questions about my layoff (budget cuts at my company too). I was so nervous during the call but she was actually really professional and just seemed to be gathering facts. Got my determination letter exactly 5 business days later - approved! Then it took about another week for the actual payments to start hitting my account, but they did backpay me for all the weeks I had been requesting. The whole thing from caseworker call to first payment was about 2 weeks total. Since your separation was due to company downsizing, that's typically considered "no fault" which should work in your favor. Just keep doing those work searches and requesting your weekly payments. The caseworker call really is a good sign that your claim is actively being processed rather than sitting in limbo. Good luck!

This is exactly what I needed to hear! 5 business days from call to determination and then backpay for all the weeks - that gives me a realistic timeline to expect. It's so reassuring to hear from someone who went through the same process with a similar situation. I was wondering about the backpay part especially since I've been requesting payments but not receiving anything yet. Two weeks total from caseworker call to first payment sounds very reasonable. Thanks for sharing your experience, it really helps with the anxiety of not knowing what to expect!
