TWC application submitted Aug 21 - still no approval decision. Normal wait time?

Hey everyone, I submitted my Texas unemployment application on August 21st (about 2.5 weeks ago) and haven't heard anything back about whether I'm approved or denied. My online account just shows "pending" with no other details. Is this normal? How long did it take for y'all to get a decision? I'm starting to worry because rent is coming up soon and I've got about $230 left in my account. Should I be trying to call them or just keep waiting? Never been through this process before so any insight would be super helpful!

Mine took almost 4 weeks back in May. TWC is super backed up right now... just wait it out

4 weeks?? That's crazy! Did you have to do anything special to get approved or did it just magically change status one day?

The standard processing time for TWC unemployment applications is typically 21 days (3 weeks), but many claims are taking 4-6 weeks right now due to high volume. If your application shows "pending" without any requests for additional information, that's actually a good sign - it means they have everything they need to process your claim. In the meantime, make sure you're submitting your payment requests on your assigned filing days even while waiting for approval. If approved, you'll receive back payments for those weeks. Also, ensure you're completing your work search activities (3 per week in Texas) and documenting them. If you hit the 4-week mark without any updates, then it would be appropriate to contact TWC for a status check.

Thank you so much for explaining! I was worried I'd done something wrong. I have been doing the payment requests but wasn't 100% sure about the work search requirements yet since I haven't been approved. I'll start documenting those right away.

THE SYSTEM IS RIGGED TO MAKE YOU WAIT!!!! I applied in June and waited 7 WEEKS before getting ANY response. They make you wait hoping you'll give up and find a job so they don't have to pay!!! CALL THEM EVERYDAY until someone picks up - DONT let them ignore you!!!

This isn't accurate. The delays are due to processing volume, not a conspiracy. Calling repeatedly can actually slow down processing as it pulls staff from claims processing to answer phones. The 21-28 day timeframe is standard for initial claims verification.

I was in the same boat last month! Applied July 12th and didn't hear anything until August 18th. I tried calling every day but always got the busy signal or it would hang up on me after 45 minutes on hold. Super frustrating! Finally I found this service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual TWC agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh The agent I spoke with was able to see that my claim had been flagged for an employment verification issue that nobody had told me about. Got it resolved that day and was approved 3 days later. Might be worth checking if there's something holding yours up too. Their website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out.

Thanks for the tip! I might give that a try if I don't hear anything by next week. Did they tell you specifically why your claim was taking so long when you finally got through?

Yeah, turns out my last employer disputed the reason for separation (they said I quit, I said I was laid off). The TWC agent scheduled a phone interview right away to sort it out, which probably saved me weeks of waiting.

My neighbors cousins friend got denied because she didn't upload her ID verification stuff in time. Make sure you check all your messages!!

Good point - I double checked and don't see any messages about ID verification. My dashboard just has the initial application confirmation but nothing else requiring action.

Here's what's actually happening with your claim: 1. TWC has to verify your employment history with all employers from the past 18 months 2. They send notices to each employer who has 14 days to respond 3. If any employer disputes your reason for separation, that creates additional delays The current average wait time is 24-28 days for clean claims (no disputes or issues). Claims with potential issues can take 35-45 days. Keep submitting your payment requests every two weeks on your assigned day. Document your 3 weekly work search activities starting from your application date. If you're approved, you'll receive payment for all qualifying weeks. If you reach day 30 with no updates, then it's worth trying to contact TWC directly as your claim may have an issue requiring additional information.

This is super helpful, thank you! I'm on day 19 now so I'll try to be patient for at least another week or so. My former employer and I parted on good terms, so I'm hoping they won't dispute anything.

One additional thing to check: make sure you've registered with WorkInTexas.com. This is a requirement for receiving benefits, and sometimes claims get held up because claimants haven't completed this step. It's separate from your TWC unemployment account.

Oh! I didn't know about this requirement. Going to register right now - thank you for the heads up! Could that be what's holding things up?

It's definitely a possibility. After you register, your claim should move forward within 3-5 business days if that was the only issue. You'll also need to upload your resume there as part of the work search requirements.
