Filed ny unemployment claim on Oct 15 - how long until I know if I'm approved?
I submitted my unemployment claim on October 15th and got two letters pretty fast. One told me when I could start claiming benefits and the other showed my weekly benefit amount. But now I'm stuck in this weird limbo where I have no idea if I'm actually approved or not. It's been almost three weeks and I'm getting really frustrated with the whole process. I've tried calling multiple times but can't get through to anyone. Has anyone else experienced this? How long did it take for you to find out if you were approved? I've got bills piling up and I just need a yes or no at this point.

I was in your exact situation last month. It's so frustrating! The whole system is broken. For me it took about 4 weeks to get confirmation that I was approved. Keep certifying each week even though you dont know if youre approved yet - theyll pay you retroactively if you get approved.

•4 weeks?! Ugh that's crazy. Did you end up getting all your back pay when you were finally approved?

•Yeah I got all the back pay at once. It was like 3 weeks worth. Just make sure u certify every single week no matter what!

•This 👆 keep certifying, they will backpay you once approved. I waited almost 6 weeks but got every penny owed.

After being stuck in the same situation and not being able to reach anyone on the phone for WEEKS, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it literally saved me. They got me a callback with an actual live agent and I got my claim sorted in minutes. Talking to that agent got my money unlocked so fast after weeks of silence. It was the only way I could talk to a live agent after trying for so long. Check out this video that explains it: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•I was super skeptical too but it totally worked for me. Got a callback within a couple hours and the agent fixed everything. Best decision I made through this whole nightmare.

•yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

•No catch. It literally just connects you with an agent. I waited on hold for hours before finding this. Wish I'd known about it sooner tbh.

Welcome to the ny unemployment system 🤡 They make you wait FOREVERRR and don't tell you anything. I waited 5 weeks before getting approved. The whole time I thought I did something wrong on my application. Just keep certifying weekly and eventually they'll either approve you or send a letter saying you're denied with a reason.

Their communication is TERRIBLE. I had to check my online account constantly. The letters don't tell you much - look for any messages in your online account inbox or check your payment history. Sometimes they approve you but don't actually tell you directly... you just start seeing payments processing. Weird system.

•This!! I literally found out I was approved because I randomly checked my payment history and saw a pending deposit. Never got any notification lol

•Really?? I've been checking my online account but nothing new shows up. Just the same info from when I first applied. Where exactly do you see pending payments?

•Go to your payment history tab. If nothing's there yet, you're still in processing limbo. Check it daily tho!

The waiting period is about 3-6 weeks usually. But with their current backlog, I've seen people waiting 8+ weeks. It's absolutely insane. Your best bet is to somehow get through to a real person. I finally got through after using claimyr.com - paid for the service but it was worth every penny to finally get my benefits released.

•8+ weeks?! That's terrifying. I can't wait that long. I might have to try that service you mentioned if I don't hear anything by next week.

Here's the REAL deal with NY unemployment right now (former DOL employee here): The initial letters you received are AUTOMATED. They don't mean you're approved - they're just acknowledgment that your claim was received and entered into the system. Those letters show your potential benefit amount IF you get approved. Unfortunately, most claims are now manually reviewed due to the massive fraud they experienced. This is causing major delays. The system was designed to automatically approve straightforward claims, but now almost everything gets flagged for review. Your best options are: 1. Keep certifying weekly - this is CRUCIAL 2. Check your online message center daily 3. Try calling right when they open (7:30am) - this is when wait times are shortest 4. If you can't get through, consider using a service like claimyr.com that will wait on hold for you and connect you to an agent 5. Check if your state representative's office can help - sometimes they can escalate unemployment issues The current average wait time for approval is about 4-5 weeks, but some complicated cases can take 8+ weeks. Don't give up - the system is frustrating but persistence pays off.

•Thank you so much for this detailed explanation. I had no idea the letters didn't mean anything yet. I'll keep certifying and try to get through to someone.

•Have you used that calling service personally? Just wondering if it actually works or if it's some kind of scam.

•I haven't personally needed to use it since I know the system, but I've heard from multiple claimants who've had success with it. It's legitimate - they essentially just wait on hold for you and then connect you when an agent picks up.

Nobody tell you this but sometimes the website will update with your approval before any letter comes. Check your payment history every day! Thats how I found out I was approved. No letter, no email, nothing. Just suddenly saw payments processing.

•Really? That's so weird. I'll start checking that section too. Their communication is awful!

PSA: If u have ANY other job history or income in the past 18 months besides the job u lost, it can significantly delay your claim. They have to contact all previous employers to verify everything. That's what happened to me and it took 2 months to sort out.

•This is so true. I had a small part time gig for 2 weeks last year and it held up my claim for AGES while they verified it 🤦♀️

•I did have a second part-time job earlier this year... that might be what's causing the delay. Ugh.

The waiting is unbearable but dont give up hope! I applied for unemployment on September 3rd and didn't get approved until October 12th, but then suddenly got a deposit for all 6 weeks at once. No warning, no notification, just money appeared in my account.

Look for the "Determination of Benefits" letter. That's the one that officially tells you if you're approved. The initial letters are just acknowledgments of your claim and potential benefit amount. If you don't get that determination letter within 4 weeks, something might be holding up your claim.

•I don't think I got that letter yet. Just the two initial ones. Good to know what to look for, thanks!

The current processing time is RIDICULOUS. A few tips that might help speed things up: - If you can't get through on the phone (and let's be real, none of us can 🙄), try the online chat feature - Email them through the contact form AND the direct unemployment email - Reach out to your state assembly person (seriously, this works!) - Check your spam folder daily - important emails get filtered there - Use claimyr.com to get a callback if you're desperate (worked for me) Stay strong - this system is designed to be frustrating but you'll get through it!

•I second contacting your state rep! After 6 weeks of silence, I emailed my assemblyman's office and suddenly my claim was approved THREE DAYS LATER. Not a coincidence!

•I didn't even think about contacting my rep! That's a great idea. And I'll look into that callback service too. Thanks!

Does anyone know if you can get denied AFTER receiving those initial letters? I'm in the same situation and getting nervous...

Zainab Ahmed
•Yes, you can. Those first letters are just acknowledging your claim exists. The actual approval/denial comes later after they review everything. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news 😕

The entire NY unemployment system is held together with duct tape and prayers. After trying to get through on the phone for TWO WEEKS STRAIGHT, I used claimyr.com and got an agent on the phone who was able to push my claim through immediately. Turns out it was just sitting in someone's queue waiting to be reviewed.

•It just saves you from having to call 800 times a day. They connect you directly to an agent when one's available. My issue got fixed in one call after weeks of frustration.
