NY unemployment approval taking forever - filed Sept 2025 still waiting!
I filed a new NY unemployment claim on September 24, 2025 and already received two letters pretty quickly - one telling me when I can start claiming and another with my benefit amount. But I'm super confused about this waiting period and how long it actually takes to find out if I'm officially approved? I've been calling NYSDOL repeatedly but can't get through to anyone. I'm just so tired of this waiting game. Like seriously, just tell me if I'm approved or not! Has anyone else experienced this? How long did approval take for you after getting those initial letters?

This is pretty normal for NY unemployment right now. Those initial letters are automated, but final approval can take 2-3 weeks after filing. The fact that you got the monetary determination letter (the one with your benefit amount) is actually a good sign. The system is just backed up like crazy since they implemented the new verification system in August. Keep certifying weekly even while waiting for final approval - if approved, you'll get backpay for those weeks.

•Thanks for the info! Do they at least send some kind of notification when you're officially approved? Or do you just suddenly start getting payments?

OMG I'm in the EXACT same boat!!! Filed Sept 18 and got those same letters within days but then NOTHING!! It's like they send you just enough info to get your hopes up and then ghost you. This is my first time on unemployment and I'm freaking out because my rent is due next week. Has ANYONE actually gotten through to a real person on their phone lines?? I've tried calling like 50 times!

•It's so frustrating! I've been trying different times of day to call but it's either busy signals or that automated system that eventually hangs up on you. Let me know if you find a way through!

•A MONTH?? I can't wait that long! There has to be a faster way to find out what's happening with our claims!

I used to work as a claims specialist (not in NY, but the process is similar). Here's what's happening: The monetary determination letter means your wage records qualify you for benefits. The waiting week is required by NY law - it's essentially a non-paid week that serves as a processing period. After that, you need to pass the non-monetary determination, which verifies your reason for separation from employment. This is where delays typically happen. My advice: 1) Continue certifying weekly without fail, 2) Check your payment history page daily, and 3) Look for any messages in your online inbox that might request additional information. Many claims get held up because they're waiting for employer verification or additional documentation.

•This is super helpful, thank you! I didn't realize there was a separate non-monetary determination. Does that waiting week start from when I filed or from when I got the determination letter?

I went through this back in June. The system is completely broken! I waited 6 weeks after getting those same letters before seeing a penny. Every time I called, I'd get disconnected or put on hold for hours. I finally got through using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they have this system that basically waits on hold for you and connects you directly to an agent when one becomes available. Totally worth it for me because I found out my claim had been flagged for a simple ID verification issue that took 2 minutes to fix once I actually spoke to someone. Check out their demo: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Thanks for the suggestion! I'm going to try calling a few more times this week, but if I still can't get through I might have to check this out. 6 weeks is insane - I can't wait that long.

•is that service legit? seems weird to use a third party just to call unemployment

•Yeah it's legit. I was skeptical too but was desperate after weeks of trying. They don't access your account or anything - they just connect the call and then you talk directly to NYSDOL.

My neighbor had the same thing happen last month. She got approved after 3 weeks but never got any notification about it. She just kept certifying and suddenly the money appeared in her account one day. I think this is just how NY does it now, unfortunately.

•THREE WEEKS?? That's actually faster than I expected based on other comments here. I guess I should just keep certifying and checking my payment history obsessively lol

This whole system is DESIGNED to be frustrating so people give up. I had to wait 5 weeks last year while somehow paying bills with no income. They want you to struggle! And the ridiculous part is they backdated my payments once approved, but what good does that do when your landlord is threatening eviction NOW? The politicians should be forced to live on unemployment for a month and see how they like waiting weeks with no communication!!!

•While I understand your frustration, the delays aren't intentionally designed to make people give up. The NYSDOL system was overwhelmed during COVID and they're still implementing updates. The backdating of payments is actually meant to ensure you don't lose money due to processing delays. If you're facing eviction, you should mention that when you do reach an agent - there are sometimes ways to expedite claims in hardship situations.

One thing nobody mentioned yet - check your spam/junk email folders regularly. Sometimes the approval notifications end up there instead of your inbox. Also, make sure your contact information is up to date in the system. If they need additional information and can't reach you, that will definitely delay your claim processing.

•Good point! Just checked my spam folder and there's nothing from NYSDOL yet, but I'll keep an eye on it. All my contact info should be current.

u should just keep certifying. i know someone who got random message saying they needed more info but never got email notification. they only saw it by logging in. check ur messages on the account every day too

•I've been checking both the website and my email daily. No messages requesting anything yet, but I'll definitely keep a closer eye on the account messages. Thanks!

Update on my earlier comment - I just checked the NYSDOL website and they're reporting higher than normal processing times due to a system upgrade that started September 15. They're estimating 3-4 weeks for new claims right now, up from their usual 1-2 weeks. So your timeline is unfortunately right in line with current expectations.

•Thanks for checking that! At least now I know it's not just me. Guess I'll have to be patient for another week or two.

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Filed my claim on September 30th and got those two letters within the first week, but it's been radio silence since then. The waiting is absolutely killing me - I keep refreshing my payment history page hoping something will magically appear. Reading through everyone's experiences here is both reassuring and terrifying at the same time. It sounds like 3-4 weeks is the new normal, which means I've still got another week or two to go. Has anyone had luck calling early in the morning or later in the evening to get through to someone?

•Hey Javier! I've been trying different times too and honestly haven't had much luck. Early morning (like 8-8:30am) seems slightly better than midday, but still mostly busy signals. I read somewhere that Tuesdays and Wednesdays might be less busy than Mondays, but who knows if that's actually true. The whole system is just overwhelmed right now. At least we know we're not alone in this nightmare waiting game! Keep me posted if you manage to get through - I'm curious if they'll give us any real updates on our claims.

I'm in a similar situation - filed September 22nd and got those same initial letters but nothing since! The waiting is so nerve-wracking, especially when you're trying to budget with no idea when payments will actually start. I've been keeping detailed notes of all my certification dates and checking the payment history obsessively. One tip I found helpful: I set up text alerts through my bank so I'll know immediately if any deposits come through. Also been screenshotting everything in case I need proof later. It's frustrating that there's no clear timeline or status updates, but reading everyone's experiences here makes me feel less alone in this process. Fingers crossed we all see some movement soon!
