What does an unemployment approval letter look like from NYS Department of Labor?
I submitted my initial unemployment claim about 10 days ago and I keep checking my my.ny.gov account but I'm not sure what I'm looking for exactly. Should I have received some kind of approval letter by now? What does the NYS Department of Labor approval notification actually look like - is it an email, a letter in the mail, or just something that shows up in my online account? I'm getting anxious because I haven't heard anything definitive yet and I need to know if my claim was approved so I can start filing my weekly claims. Has anyone received one recently and can describe what to expect?

You'll receive a 'Monetary Benefit Determination' letter, either through your online account inbox or by mail. It shows your weekly benefit amount, base period earnings, and tells you if you're approved. The letter will have your benefit year dates and explain your job search requirements. Check your online account under 'Correspondence' - that's usually where it appears first before the physical letter arrives.

•Thank you! I found the correspondence section and there's a letter dated 3 days ago that I missed. It shows my weekly benefit amount as $285 - does that seem right for someone who was making about $52k annually?

mine took almost 2 weeks to show up online, don't panic yet. when it comes it'll have all your benefit info and the amount you can collect each week

The approval letter is pretty detailed actually. It includes your base period (the year they used to calculate your benefits), your total benefit amount for the year, your weekly amount, and importantly - your job search requirements. Make sure you read the whole thing because it explains what you need to do to keep getting benefits. Also look for any issues that might require additional documentation.

•Good point about reading everything. I see mine mentions I need to register with the job search system within 7 days. Is that something separate from my regular weekly claims?

I've been waiting 3 weeks and still nothing!! This is ridiculous, I can't even get through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor to find out what's happening with my claim. The whole system is broken.

•If you're having trouble reaching them by phone, I had success using Claimyr recently. It's a service that helps you get through to NYS Department of Labor agents - they have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting disconnected.

The letter also tells you when to start filing your weekly claims. Don't start filing before you get that letter because the dates matter. My approval letter specifically said to begin filing claims starting the week of [specific date]. Also keep that letter safe because you might need to reference your benefit year dates later.

•wait so you can't just start filing weekly claims right after you apply? I've been filing for 2 weeks already thinking that's what you're supposed to do

I just went through this process last month. The approval letter will show up in your online account first under "Correspondence" - usually takes 7-14 business days after you file. It's called a "Monetary Benefit Determination" and will clearly state if you're approved or denied. If approved, it shows your weekly benefit amount, total benefits available, and your benefit year dates. Don't worry too much about the 10 days - that's still within the normal timeframe. Just keep checking that correspondence section daily!

•Thanks for the timeline info! I'm at day 10 so sounds like I'm still in the normal range. Quick question - when you got your Monetary Benefit Determination letter, did you have to do anything else to activate your benefits or could you immediately start filing weekly claims? I want to make sure I don't miss any steps once mine comes through.

•Once you get your Monetary Benefit Determination letter, you can usually start filing weekly claims right away as long as the letter shows you're approved. The letter will specify your "benefit year begin date" - that's when you can start filing. Just make sure you also complete the required job search registration within the timeframe mentioned in your letter (usually 7 days). The weekly filing becomes available in your online account once everything is processed. Good luck!

I'm also waiting on my approval letter - filed my claim 8 days ago and checking my online account obsessively! It's reassuring to hear that 10-14 business days is normal. One thing I noticed is that my claim status shows "pending" but there's a section that says "Issues that may affect your claim" and it's empty - is that a good sign? Also, for those who got approved, did your claim status change from "pending" to something else before you received the actual Monetary Benefit Determination letter?

•Yes, having an empty "Issues that may affect your claim" section is definitely a good sign! That usually means there are no red flags or documentation problems with your application. In my experience, the claim status stayed as "pending" right up until the Monetary Benefit Determination letter appeared in my correspondence - there wasn't really an intermediate status change. You're only at 8 days so you're well within the normal window. The obsessive checking is totally understandable though - I was refreshing that page multiple times a day too!

I just got my Monetary Benefit Determination letter last week after waiting 12 days - it showed up in my online account under Correspondence on a Tuesday morning. The letter is pretty comprehensive and includes your weekly benefit amount (mine was $320/week), your base period earnings breakdown, benefit year start/end dates, and specific instructions about when to start filing weekly claims. One thing that caught me off guard was that it also included work search requirements that I needed to complete within 7 days of receiving the letter. Make sure you read through the entire document carefully because there are action items you need to complete to keep your benefits active. The good news is once you get this letter, you can typically start filing your weekly claims right away as long as you meet the requirements listed!

•Thanks for sharing your experience Carmen! The 12 day timeline helps put things in perspective. Quick question about those work search requirements - did you have to register on a separate website or was it something you could do directly through your my.ny.gov account? I want to make sure I'm prepared to complete everything quickly once I get my letter so I don't accidentally delay my benefits.

Just wanted to share my recent experience to help ease your anxiety! I filed my claim 2 weeks ago and got my Monetary Benefit Determination letter in my online account after 9 business days. It's a pretty official-looking document that clearly states "APPROVED" at the top if you're approved. Mine showed a weekly benefit of $298 (I was making around $48k), and it included all the details others mentioned - base period, benefit year dates, and work search requirements. The key thing is to check the "Correspondence" section in your online account daily rather than just the main dashboard. Don't stress too much about the 10-day mark - you're still well within the normal processing window!

•Thanks for sharing that Gabrielle! It's really helpful to hear from someone who just went through this process. I'm curious about the $298 weekly benefit on a $48k salary - that seems pretty reasonable. I'm making about $45k so hopefully mine will be in a similar range. One quick question - when you said the document clearly shows "APPROVED" at the top, is that literally the first thing you see when you open the letter? I want to make sure I don't miss it when mine hopefully arrives in the next few days!

I'm in a similar boat - filed my claim 12 days ago and have been refreshing my online account constantly! Reading through everyone's experiences here is really reassuring. It sounds like the Monetary Benefit Determination letter is what we're all waiting for, and 10-14 business days seems to be the normal range. I appreciate everyone sharing their weekly benefit amounts too - it helps set realistic expectations. One thing I'm wondering about is whether there are any signs in your online account that indicate your claim is being processed normally vs. if there might be issues? My status just says "pending" but I'm hoping that's normal at this stage.

•Hey Avery! I'm actually in the exact same situation - filed 11 days ago and constantly checking my account too. From what I've gathered reading through this thread, having a "pending" status seems totally normal at this stage. The fact that you don't have any issues listed under "Issues that may affect your claim" (assuming yours is empty like others mentioned) is apparently a good sign. It's nerve-wracking waiting but sounds like we're both still well within the typical processing window. Fingers crossed we both get our letters soon!
