NYS Department of Labor approval notification - how will i know if i'm approved for unemployment?
I submitted my initial unemployment claim last week through the my.ny.gov portal and I'm constantly checking my account but the status still just says 'claim processing.' I'm getting really anxious because I need to know if I qualify before my savings run out. Do they send an email? Text? Mail? How long does it usually take to find out if you're approved? I keep hearing different things from people and I don't want to miss any important notifications.

You'll get a notification through multiple channels once NYS Department of Labor makes a decision. Check your my.ny.gov account daily - that's where you'll see the status change first. They'll also mail you a monetary determination letter within 7-10 business days that shows your weekly benefit amount if approved. If there are any issues with your claim, it might go into adjudication which can take 2-4 weeks longer.

The approval process depends on your situation. If you were laid off with clear separation reason, it's usually straightforward. If you quit or were fired, expect adjudication. Don't panic yet! A week is pretty normal for processing. I got laid off from my restaurant job in March and it took about 10 days before I saw 'approved' in my account. Then I had to wait for the debit card to arrive before I could access any money. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval - you can backdate them but it's easier to stay current.
