Can I check the status of my unemployment claim online through NYS Department of Labor?

I submitted my initial unemployment claim about 10 days ago and haven't heard anything back yet. Is there a way to check the status of my unemployment claim online? I've been trying to figure out if there's a portal or something on the NYS Department of Labor website where I can see what's happening with my application. Getting kind of worried since I need to know if I should start filing weekly claims or if there's some issue holding things up.

Yes, you can check your claim status through the my.ny.gov portal. Log in with your account and navigate to the unemployment services section. Your claim status will show if it's pending, in adjudication, or approved. You should also be able to see if there are any outstanding issues that need to be resolved.

Thanks! I found the portal but my claim just says 'under review' - does that mean it's in adjudication or is that something different?

10 days isn't too long actually, mine took almost 3 weeks before I got any update from NYS Department of Labor. The online system will tell you if you need to file weekly claims even while your initial claim is being processed.

Good to know it's not just me! Did you start filing weekly claims right away or wait until your initial claim was approved?

You should definitely be filing your weekly claims even if your initial application is still being processed. The NYS Department of Labor website has a specific section for weekly claim certification - don't wait or you could lose benefits for those weeks. The online status checker will also show you if there are any documents you need to upload or questions you need to answer.

This is so confusing though - how can you file weekly claims if your main claim isn't even approved yet?? Seems backwards to me

I know it seems weird but that's how the system works. You certify for each week to establish your claim to those benefits, then if your initial claim gets approved they'll pay you for all the weeks you certified for retroactively.

I had trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor by phone for weeks when I needed to check on my claim status. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to a real person at the unemployment office. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works - basically handles all the calling and waiting for you until they get an agent on the line.

How much does something like that cost though? Seems like it might be expensive just to check claim status

It was worth it for me since I'd been trying to call for days with no luck. Way less frustrating than sitting on hold for hours just to get disconnected.

the my.ny.gov site is pretty good for checking status but sometimes it takes a while to update... mine showed pending for like 2 weeks then suddenly switched to approved

@Carmen Vega - I just went through this same process last month! The online portal at my.ny.gov is definitely your best bet for checking status. When you log in, look for the "Unemployment Services" section and then "View Claim Status." It will show you exactly where your claim stands in the process. Also, don't forget to keep certifying for weekly benefits even while your initial claim is being reviewed - you can do this through the same portal. The system is designed so you won't lose any weeks of benefits as long as you keep certifying. Hope this helps and good luck with your claim!

@Freya Thomsen This is really helpful info! I m'also dealing with a pending claim right now and wasn t'sure about the weekly certification thing. Did you have any issues with the my.ny.gov portal or did it work smoothly for you? I ve'heard some people say the site can be glitchy sometimes.
