Got a weird TWC Determination letter - not sure if I'm approved or denied
Hi everyone, I checked my mail today and got this Determination on Payment of Unemployment Benefits letter from TWC that's totally confusing me. It says something about 'qualifying wages' and 'base period' but then has a bunch of numbers that don't make sense to me. There's also something about being 'monetarily eligible' but then another paragraph mentions 'disqualification' which has me freaking out. Does this mean I'm approved or denied? I lost my job last month when our company downsized and I've been waiting 3 weeks for my first payment. Can someone help me understand what this letter actually means and what I should do next? Do I need to appeal something or am I good to go?

•So you didn't have to do anything with the letter? I'm so stressed about bills right now and can't tell if I should be calling them or just waiting.

The Determination letter is basically telling you whether you qualify financially for unemployment benefits. The 'monetarily eligible' part means TWC has determined you earned enough wages during your base period (that's the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you filed). The 'disqualification' section might be explaining circumstances that could disqualify you, not necessarily saying you are disqualified. Look for a section that specifically says APPROVED or DENIED. Also check for a weekly benefit amount (WBA) - if they've calculated one for you, that's a good sign. If it shows a specific dollar amount you'll receive weekly, you're likely approved. Is there any part that mentions separation reason or work search requirements?

•Thank you! I just checked again and it does show a Weekly Benefit Amount of $520! So that means I'm approved? The letter has another section about separation but it doesn't say anything specific. Just something about 'no disqualification under Section 207.044' whatever that means. There's no clear APPROVED statement anywhere which is why I was confused.

If it shows a weekly benefit amount, you're APPROVED for benefits! The "no disqualification under Section 207.044" is actually good news - that section relates to whether you were fired for misconduct or quit without good cause. So basically they're saying they found no reason to disqualify you based on how your employment ended. You should be good to go, but you still need to request payment every two weeks and complete your work search activities (minimum 3 per week in Texas). Have you been doing your payment requests?

•Oh thank goodness! Yes, I've done one payment request so far but haven't received anything yet. I've been doing job applications too and keeping track. So I don't need to respond to this letter at all? Just keep requesting payment?

You're all set! Keep doing your payment requests and work search activities. The first payment can sometimes take 2-3 weeks to process even after approval. If you haven't received anything after your next payment request, that's when I'd try to contact TWC. Just to make sure - did you receive a separate letter about work search requirements? They should have sent you one specifying how many work search activities you need to complete each week (should be 3 for most counties in Texas).

•Yes! I got that work search letter about a week ago. It says 3 activities per week. I've been applying to at least 5 jobs each week just to be safe. So relieved I'm approved!

The TWC system is GARBAGE at explaining things clearly!!! I got the same runaround with my determination letter. It took me FOUR WEEKS of trying to call them every day before I finally got through to confirm I was approved. They send these letters full of legal jargon instead of just saying YES or NO like normal people would! And then when you need to talk to someone, good luck getting through their phone system. I spent literally 3-4 hours every morning trying to get through, getting disconnected, trying again... total nightmare!

•I had the same horrible experience trying to reach TWC! Busy signals for DAYS. I finally used this service called Claimyr that got me connected to a TWC agent in about 20 minutes. Totally worth it just to get answers and stop stressing. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh if you're interested. Their website is claimyr.com - saved me from pulling my hair out trying to get through those busy signals.

•That's good to know, thanks! My payment request days are Monday or Tuesday. I'll make sure to keep doing them on time.

PROTIP: Make sure you print or save a screenshot every time you complete a payment request! The TWC system sometimes glitches and doesn't record them properly. I learned this the hard way when I had to prove I'd been requesting payments when they claimed I missed one.

•OMG yes! This happened to me too! I thought I was going crazy because I KNEW I had done my payment request but the system showed I missed it. Didn't have proof though so I lost that week's benefits. Document EVERYTHING with TWC!

One more thing to add - if your determination letter shows a lower weekly amount than you expected, you might want to double-check that they have all your earnings recorded correctly. Sometimes employers don't report all quarters or there are errors in the wage records. But if you're satisfied with your $520 weekly benefit amount, then you're good to go - just keep up with your payment requests and work search requirements. The system will eventually catch up with payments.

•I was expecting around $500 based on what I made, so $520 seems about right to me. I'll keep doing my payment requests and job searches. Thank you all SO MUCH for helping me understand this! The letter was so confusing, but I feel much better now knowing I'm approved and on the right track.
