TWC approved me but payment blocked - decision letter confusion about job separation
I'm so frustrated with TWC right now! I got approved for unemployment benefits last week, but I'm still not getting any money. My most recent decision letter says they need to verify my job separation was valid - but they ALREADY sent me a letter confirming it was valid three weeks ago! They also mentioned removing a payment block, but it's still there when I check online. I called the Tele-Serv number yesterday and the automated system told me my maximum benefit amount is $9,800, but that I've received $0 so far. I've submitted all my employment records through the portal and uploaded the separation documents they requested. What else am I supposed to do? Has anyone dealt with this contradiction in decision letters before? I've been requesting payment every two weeks for over a month now and still nothing in my account. My bills are piling up and I'm getting really worried.

•2 months?? I can't wait that long! Did you have to do anything special to finally get paid or did it just randomly start working?

This sounds like a common TWC system issue where your claim has multiple determination letters with conflicting information. What's happening is that your claim was likely flagged for a secondary review after the initial approval. The block pay reference means they have a temporary hold on disbursing funds until this secondary review is complete. A few things you should do: 1. Make sure you're continuing to request payments on your scheduled days, even if you're not receiving money yet 2. Print and save all determination letters for your records 3. Check your correspondence inbox daily for any new requests for information 4. Verify your payment method is correct in the system (direct deposit or debit card) This should resolve itself once the secondary review is complete, but if it goes beyond 3 weeks, you'll need to speak with a claims specialist.

•Thank you for explaining! I've been requesting payments every two weeks as scheduled. My payment method is set up correctly (direct deposit). I'll keep checking for new correspondence. Do you know if there's a way to see what's causing the secondary review or how long it typically takes?

•The confusion usually happens because different departments review different aspects of your claim. The initial approval might be based on your work history and earnings, while the separation review is handled by another team. It's frustrating, but there is a method to the madness - they're just terrible at communicating it to claimants.

There's a specific code on your determination letter that explains the exact reason for the payment block. Look on the right side of the letter for something like "BYE-" or "BLOCK-" followed by a number. That code tells you exactly what's holding things up. In your case, it sounds like you have a "pending issue" related to your job separation that's triggering a secondary review. Even though you received an initial approval letter, the system might have flagged something during processing that requires additional verification. Try calling (800) 939-6631 and using the automated system to check for any pending issues on your claim. Sometimes it gives more specific information than the website. If you can't get through to a representative, you can also email TWC through your online account portal, but response times are typically 10-14 business days. If you need to speak with an actual person at TWC (which is probably what you need at this point), I'd recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was stuck in a similar situation back in January and couldn't get through to anyone after trying for weeks. Claimyr got me connected to a TWC agent in about 30 minutes. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh. It saved me so much frustration after weeks of busy signals and disconnections.

•Thank you so much for this detailed info. I checked my determination letter and there is a code "BLOCK-7" on it. I'll try calling that number tomorrow. I've been trying to call TWC for days and can't get through, so I'll check out that Claimyr service if I keep hitting dead ends. At this point I just need to talk to a real person who can explain what's happening!

BLOCK-7 is specifically related to separation verification. Even though they previously verified your separation, sometimes the system requires a secondary review if certain keywords or situations are detected in your application. Here's what typically happens: 1. Initial approval based on submitted documentation 2. System flags for secondary review during processing 3. Payment block placed while review occurs 4. Second determination letter issued once review completes When you DO get through to TWC, ask specifically about the BLOCK-7 code and request an expedited review. Mention that you've already been approved once and are experiencing financial hardship due to the delay. They can sometimes prioritize these cases. Also, check your WorkInTexas.com account to make sure your work search activities are properly logged. Sometimes payment blocks occur when the system doesn't recognize your work search activities, even though that's not what the letter states.

•This is really helpful information, thank you! I've definitely been documenting all my work search activities (at least 3 per week). I'll mention the BLOCK-7 code specifically when I call. Do you know if there's a particular time of day that's better for getting through to an actual person?

•Early morning right when they open (7:00am) is typically best, but honestly it's a challenge at any time. If you're going to try on your own, be prepared to redial repeatedly for potentially hours. That's why many people end up using calling services - the time savings can be worth it when you're dealing with delayed benefits.

I went thru this EXACT thing last month! It's so frustrating like they can't even read their own determination lettrs?? What worked for me was I emailed my state representative (look up who represents your district) and they have special TWC liaisons who can cut through the red tape. My payment was fixed within 48 hours after my rep's office contacted TWC. Worth a shot while you're trying to get thru on the phone!

•I didn't even think about contacting my state rep! That's a great idea, I'll look them up right now. Did you just email their official office?

•Yep! Just went to the TX legislature website, found my rep, and there was a "contact" form. I explained my situation, included my claim ID number and contact info, and mentioned I was facing financial hardship. They called me the next day and had someone from TWC call me the day after that. Way faster than waiting on hold forever!

•I think I'm answering them correctly? I've been saying yes to looking for work, yes to being able to work, and listing my 3 work search activities each time. Which question tripped you up?

•the one that asks if you refused any work! i was saying yes thinking it meant had i been offered and declined any jobs (which i hadnt) but apparently saying yes means you DID refuse work which automatically blocks payment. should always answer no unless you actually turned down a job offer

•Oh! I've been answering that one correctly then - always said No since I haven't refused any work. Good to know that can cause issues though.

Did you get this resolved? I'm curious if contacting your state rep or using Claimyr worked out for you. I'm dealing with something similar now (except my block code is different) and wondering what the most efficient solution was in your case.

•Update: I ended up using Claimyr to get through to TWC yesterday morning. Got connected to a specialist in about 20 minutes! The agent explained that my employer had initially confirmed my separation reason, but then submitted additional information that triggered a review. She expedited the secondary review and manually removed the payment block. My payment was processed this morning and should be in my account tomorrow! So relieved this is finally resolved. If anyone else is dealing with this, definitely worth getting through to a real person rather than waiting for the system to sort itself out.
