TWC approved my claim but no payment showing - severance pay confusion?
Hey everyone, I'm really confused about my TWC unemployment status. I was laid off last month and applied for benefits right away. The TWC rep I finally got through to (after calling for 3 days straight!) told me my claim was APPROVED, but I haven't received a single payment yet. It's been almost 3 weeks since approval. I did receive a severance package as one lump sum payment when I left my job. I reported this on my application. Could this be holding things up? Here's the weird part - when I call the automated line (800-558-8321), it says they have my payment request on file. But when I call the main TWC number, the rep said there's no record of a payment request from me. Huh?? Also, is there somewhere online I can actually SEE my payment history/status? I've looked all over my TWC account but can't find anything showing payments. I'm getting desperate here - rent is due next week!

Your severance is absolutely the issue here. TWC considers severance pay as disqualifying income during the weeks it's allocated to. Since you got a lump sum, they'll divide the total amount by your weekly benefit amount to determine how many weeks you're disqualified from receiving benefits. For example, if your severance was $4,500 and your weekly benefit amount is $750, you'd be disqualified for 6 weeks after your initial claim. This is why you're approved but not receiving payment yet. To see payment status, log into your TWC account, go to "Claim and Payment Status" and then "Payment Information." If no payments have been made, it won't show anything yet.

•Thank you for explaining! That makes sense about the severance. Do you know if I still need to request payment during those disqualified weeks? I'm worried about messing up my claim.

I had the same exact problem last year! The system is so confusing because they don't clearly explain the severance thing. YES you absolutely MUST continue requesting payments every two weeks on your assigned day, even during the disqualification period. If you don't, your claim could be cancelled completely and you'd have to start over. The good news is that once your disqualification period ends, you'll start receiving benefits automatically as long as you've been doing your payment requests and work searches. Hang in there!

•Oh thank goodness I asked! I was thinking of skipping the requests since I wasn't getting paid anyway. I'll definitely keep submitting them. Do you remember how long it took for your payments to start after the disqualification period?

the TWC system is GARBAGE!!! they always say different things depending on who you talk to or what number you call. i was approved too but didn't get paid for 2 MONTHS because of some "system flag" that nobody bothered to tell me about until i finally got through to someone who actually knew what they were doing. Bet you anything they're holding your money hostage because of some tiny detail in your application that doesn't match what they want. They LOVE looking for reasons not to pay people!!

•This is so true! The different phone numbers giving different info is classic TWC. I swear they do it on purpose to confuse us.

I got a severance too when I left my job in January. Just keep doing your payment requests every 2 weeks and your work searches (3 per week). My payments started automatically after my severance period was over. It was exactly 5 weeks for me.

When I was trying to deal with my TWC claim last month, I discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it was a game-changer. I was calling for days with no luck, then used their service and got connected to a TWC rep in about 15 minutes. They basically hold your place in line so you don't have to keep redialing. Saved me hours of frustration! They have a demo video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P88?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh. Definitely worth it to get a straight answer about your severance situation.

•does that actually work??? seems sketchy to me. why should we have to pay a third party just to talk to TWC? the whole system is BROKEN

•I was skeptical too, but it worked for me. I agree the system is broken - it shouldn't be this hard to talk to someone at TWC. But when you're desperate and need answers about your benefits, sometimes you just need to find solutions that work.

The confusion between the different phone lines is bcause the atuomated system just tells you if a request was SUBMITTED not if it was PROCESSED or APPROVED for payment. So one system sees your submitted request while the live person is looking at whether a payment was actually authorized. Also you need to check your determination letter in your correspondence inbox on the TWC portal. It will tell you exactly how many weeks your disqualified for due to severance. It should say something like "disqualified from [date] to [date] due to receipt of severance pay.

•Thank you! I just checked my correspondence inbox and found the letter. You're right - it says I'm disqualified until May 12th because of the severance. At least now I know exactly when to expect payments to start.

Make sure you're still fulfilling your work search requirements during the disqualification period! Document everything. TWC requires 3 work search activities each week. If you don't do them during the disqualification period, they can deny your benefits once that period ends. Also, remember that your benefit year lasts for 52 weeks from when you applied, but you only get 26 weeks of actual benefits within that time. The weeks you're disqualified for severance still count against your total 26 weeks of benefit eligibility.

•Wait I thought the disqualified weeks don't count against your 26 weeks? That doesn't seem fair at all!

•You're actually right, and I apologize for the confusion. Weeks disqualified due to severance pay do NOT count against your total benefit weeks. You still get your full 26 weeks of eligibility after the disqualification period ends. Thanks for the correction!

My friend said they got back pay for all the weeks they were waiting but I never did. Anybody know if thats a thing?

•No, there's no back pay for weeks you're disqualified due to severance. Your friend might have been waiting for a different reason, like an appeal or an investigation that was eventually resolved in their favor. For severance disqualifications, those weeks are just not payable.

Thanks everyone for the helpful information! I found my determination letter and now understand why I'm not receiving payments yet. I'll keep submitting my payment requests every two weeks and doing my work searches until the disqualification period ends. At least now I know what's going on instead of being in the dark! One last question - will TWC send me any kind of notification when my payments are about to start, or do I just need to watch my bank account?

Connor Gallagher
•They won't send a special notification that your disqualification period is ending. You'll just start seeing payments after you submit your payment request following the end date on your determination letter. If you've set up direct deposit, you'll typically see the funds 2-3 business days after your payment request is processed.

Just went through this exact same situation a few months ago! The severance confusion is SO common - TWC really needs to explain this better upfront. I was also panicking thinking something was wrong with my claim. A few tips from my experience: - Set a calendar reminder for when your disqualification period ends so you know when to expect your first payment - Keep all your work search documentation organized (I use a simple spreadsheet with company names, dates, and contact info) - If you haven't already, sign up for direct deposit in your TWC account - it's much faster than waiting for a debit card The waiting is really stressful, especially when bills are due, but once your payments start they'll come regularly as long as you keep up with your biweekly requests. You've got this!

•This is such great advice! I'm definitely going to set up that calendar reminder and get my work search documentation better organized. The direct deposit tip is especially helpful - I was wondering about that. It's reassuring to hear from someone who went through the exact same thing. The waiting really is the worst part when you don't know what's happening!

I went through this exact same situation last year! The severance disqualification is probably the most confusing part of the whole TWC process because they don't explain it clearly when you apply. A few things that helped me during my waiting period: - I created a simple document tracking my payment request dates and work search activities (saved me so much stress later) - Double-check that your direct deposit info is set up correctly in your account - mine had a typo in the routing number that would have delayed my first payment by weeks - The TWC mobile app actually shows your payment status more clearly than the website sometimes Also, don't stress too much about the different phone systems giving you different info - that's unfortunately normal. The automated line and the live reps access different databases that don't always sync up immediately. Once your disqualification period ends and payments start, they're usually pretty reliable. The hardest part is just getting through this initial waiting period when you don't know what's going on!

•This is such helpful advice! I never thought about checking my direct deposit info for typos - that would have been a disaster to discover after waiting all this time. I'm definitely going to download the mobile app too since you mentioned it shows payment status better. It's so reassuring to hear from multiple people who went through this exact same situation and came out the other side successfully. The waiting really is the hardest part when you're already stressed about finances!

I'm dealing with almost the exact same situation right now! Filed my claim about 3 weeks ago after being laid off, got approved, but no payments yet. I also received severance as a lump sum and reported it on my application. Reading through all these responses has been incredibly helpful - I had no idea that severance gets divided by your weekly benefit amount to determine the disqualification period. That explains so much! I was starting to panic thinking there was an error with my claim. I'm definitely going to check my correspondence inbox for the determination letter to see exactly when my disqualification period ends. And I'll make sure to keep submitting those biweekly payment requests even though I'm not getting paid yet - I almost made the mistake of skipping them! Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences. It's such a relief to know this is normal and that payments will start once the severance period is over. The TWC system really could do a better job explaining this upfront instead of leaving people confused and worried.

•I'm so glad this thread helped you too! It's crazy how many of us go through this exact same confusion. The severance disqualification thing really should be explained much more clearly when you first apply - it would save everyone so much stress and panic. Definitely check that determination letter ASAP so you know your timeline. And yes, absolutely keep doing those biweekly requests! I almost made that same mistake of thinking "why bother if I'm not getting paid anyway" but thankfully someone here warned me that would mess up my whole claim. Once you know your end date, it gets so much easier mentally because at least you have a countdown instead of just wondering what's wrong. Hang in there - you're definitely on the right track now!

I'm going through something similar right now! Filed my claim 2 weeks ago after a layoff and got approved, but haven't seen any payments yet. I also received a severance package that I reported on my application. Reading through everyone's responses has been so helpful - I had no idea about how severance affects the payment timeline. I was getting really worried that something was wrong with my claim, especially since the different TWC phone numbers were giving me conflicting information. I'm going to check my correspondence inbox right now for that determination letter to see exactly how long my disqualification period is. And I'll definitely keep submitting my biweekly payment requests and doing my work searches even during the waiting period. It's such a relief to find this community and realize this confusion is totally normal. TWC really needs to do a better job explaining the severance situation upfront instead of leaving people in the dark! Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - it's made this whole process so much less stressful knowing what to expect.

•Welcome to the club! I just went through this exact same situation a couple months ago and it was so confusing at first. The severance disqualification is probably the most poorly explained part of the entire TWC process. One tip I'd add - when you find your determination letter, take a screenshot or print it out and keep it handy. I referred back to mine constantly to remind myself of the exact end date when I was feeling anxious about when payments would start. Also, if you're like me and tend to overthink things, try to resist the urge to keep calling TWC during your disqualification period asking for updates. The reps can't speed up the process and you'll just get more conflicting information that will stress you out. The system is automated once your severance period ends. You're definitely on the right track now that you know what's happening. The waiting is tough but at least now you have a clear timeline instead of just wondering what went wrong!

Just wanted to add my experience here since I went through this exact same thing last year! Got laid off, received severance as a lump sum, reported it honestly on my TWC application, got approved but then... nothing. No payments for weeks. I was panicking just like you, calling constantly and getting different answers from different reps. Finally figured out it was the severance causing the delay. What really helped me was calculating it myself - I took my total severance amount and divided it by what my weekly benefit amount would be (you can estimate this from the TWC calculator online). That gave me a rough idea of how many weeks I'd be disqualified. The key things that saved my sanity: - Found my determination letter in the correspondence section (like others mentioned) - Set up direct deposit immediately so there wouldn't be delays once payments started - Created a simple calendar reminder for when my disqualification period would end - Kept doing my work searches religiously even during the waiting period The hardest part is just not knowing what's happening. Once I understood the severance timeline, the anxiety went way down. Your payments WILL start automatically once that period ends, as long as you keep up with your biweekly requests and work searches. Hang in there - this is probably the most stressful part of the whole process, but it does get better once you know what's going on!

•This is such a comprehensive breakdown - thank you for sharing all these practical tips! I especially love the idea of calculating the severance timeline myself instead of just wondering. I'm definitely going to use the TWC calculator to estimate my weekly benefit amount and do the math. The calendar reminder tip is genius too. I can already tell I'm going to be anxiously checking my account every day once I know the end date, so having that visual countdown will probably help keep me sane. And you're absolutely right about the anxiety going way down once you actually understand what's happening - not knowing was definitely the worst part. It's so reassuring to hear from so many people who went through this exact same situation and came out fine on the other side. Makes me feel much more confident that I just need to be patient and keep following the process. Thanks for taking the time to share such detailed advice!

I'm currently going through this exact same situation! Filed my claim about 10 days ago after being laid off, got approved, but no payments yet. I also received a severance package that I reported on my application. This entire thread has been incredibly eye-opening - I had absolutely no clue that severance gets divided by your weekly benefit amount to create a disqualification period. No wonder I haven't received any payments yet! I was starting to think there was some kind of system error or that I had filled something out wrong on my application. I'm going to log into my TWC account right now and check that correspondence inbox for my determination letter. Based on what everyone's saying, that should tell me exactly when my disqualification period ends so I can stop wondering and actually have a timeline to work with. Really grateful to have found this community - it's such a relief to know this confusion is completely normal and that so many others have successfully navigated through it. TWC definitely needs to be way more upfront about explaining how severance affects your payment timeline instead of leaving people stressed and in the dark about what's happening with their claims!

•Welcome to the severance confusion club! I just went through this exact same thing a few months ago and it was SO stressful not knowing what was happening. You're absolutely doing the right thing by checking for that determination letter - it'll give you peace of mind to actually see the specific dates instead of just guessing. One thing I wish I'd known earlier is that you can also call the automated line (the 800-558-8321 number that was mentioned in the original post) and it'll tell you your next payment request date. Even during the disqualification period, you still need to keep requesting on schedule, so knowing those dates helps you stay on track. The waiting is honestly the hardest part, but once you have that end date from your determination letter, it gets so much more manageable mentally. You've got this - just stay consistent with the biweekly requests and work searches, and your payments will start automatically when the severance period ends!
