Can TWC send paper checks if I can't use the ReliaCard? Payment options help needed
Hey y'all! I just got approved for unemployment benefits and TWC issued me the ReliaCard debit card, but I'm having major issues with it. The bank branch near me closed down last month and I live in a rural area without reliable transportation to get to another branch. I'm worried about accessing my benefits. Does anyone know if TWC can switch me to paper checks instead? I called the TWC number like 15 times today but kept getting disconnected. Getting desperate since I've got bills coming due next week! Any advice would be super appreciated!

Yes, TWC can definitely mail paper checks instead of using the ReliaCard! I had the same issue last year. You need to call the TWC Tele-Serv number and select the option for payment method changes. They'll help you switch from direct deposit/ReliaCard to paper checks. Just be prepared to verify your identity and explain why you need the change. The only downside is paper checks take about 7-10 days to arrive after your payment request is processed, while the card is usually faster.

•Thank you so much! I've been trying the Tele-Serv number but can't get through. Do you know if there's a specific time that's better to call? I'm getting desperate here since my first payment should be processing soon.

GOOD LUCK getting through to anyone at TWC!!! I've been trying for TWO WEEKS to change my address and payment method. Their phone system is a JOKE - either busy signals or it hangs up after 30 minutes on hold. Their online system doesn't even have an option to switch from ReliaCard to checks! The whole system is designed to make it IMPOSSIBLE to get help when you need it. I'm beyond frustrated.

•Oh no, that sounds terrible! I was worried about that. I really need to get this fixed before my payment processes or I won't be able to pay rent. Did you ever get through to anyone?

I had success using Claimyr to get through to TWC when I needed to change my payment method after moving. It's a service that holds your place in line and calls you when a TWC agent is available. Their website is claimyr.com and you can see how it works in their video demo (https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh). It saved me days of redialing since I needed to talk to a real person about my payment options. Got through to TWC in about 45 minutes instead of spending days trying.

•I used this too! Totally worth it after I spent 3 days constantly redialing TWC with no luck.

•Thank you for the suggestion! I've never heard of this service before. I'll check out the website and video. At this point I'm willing to try anything because I really need to get this payment method changed ASAP.

•Thanks, but my issue is that I lost my wallet last month with all my ID, and the ReliaCard people said I need to go to a branch with ID to get a replacement card. That's why I'm trying to get paper checks instead until I can get a new state ID.

When I got unemployment last year, I started with the ReliaCard and then switched to direct deposit, which is another option if you have a bank account. For paper checks, you definitely need to speak with a TWC representative directly. They don't advertise it much, but it's an option for people in specific situations like yours. Best times to call are right when they open at 8:00 AM or between 4:00-5:00 PM. Avoid Mondays and Tuesdays when call volume is highest. And make sure you're calling the Tele-Center (not just Tele-Serv) since you need a person, not the automated system. The number is 800-939-6631.

•This is really helpful, thank you! I'll try calling at 8:00 AM tomorrow. Unfortunately direct deposit isn't an option for me right now because my bank account got frozen due to suspected fraud (someone else, not me). It's been a rough month!

my cousin had this happen when she moved and didnt update her address so the reliacard went to her old place. she ended up having to wait on hold for like 2 hours but finally got someone to switch her to paper checks. they came in about a week after her payment request was processed. just keep trying the number!

•That's exactly why TWC and many state agencies prefer direct deposit when possible - mail forwarding issues with checks and cards are very common. Just as a heads up to the original poster, if you do get paper checks, make absolutely sure your mailing address is correct in the TWC system.

Just following up - were you able to get through to TWC about switching to paper checks? If you're still having trouble, you might also try reaching out to your state representative's office. They sometimes have direct contacts at TWC who can help resolve issues more quickly. I've seen several people in our local unemployment support group have success with this approach when they couldn't get through on the phones.

•I finally got through! Used the Claimyr service that someone suggested above and was able to speak to a representative yesterday. They said they can switch me to paper checks but warned me it would take 7-10 days for the first one to arrive. The rep was really helpful and also showed me how to track when the check is mailed in the correspondence section of my TWC account. Thanks everyone for all your suggestions!

Just FYI - when they switched me to paper checks, the first one took almost 2 WEEKS to arrive, not the 7-10 days they promised. Make sure you have some backup plan for bills in case it takes longer than expected. The TWC rep told me checks go out on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so timing of your payment request can affect when the physical check actually gets mailed.

•That's good to know, thank you for the warning. I'll see if I can delay some payments or borrow from family just in case. This whole process has been so much more complicated than I expected!

One other thing to keep in mind: when you receive paper checks, you still need to meet all the regular requirements like completing your work search activities (minimum 3 per week) and requesting payment on your assigned day. The payment method change doesn't affect any of your other unemployment obligations. Many people don't realize this and miss payments because they think the system works differently with checks.

•Thanks for the reminder! I've been keeping up with my work search activities and logging them in the system. Thankfully my payment request day is tomorrow, so hopefully this will all be sorted out by then.
