PA UC held my benefits due to RESEA scheduling issue - anyone know how long the delay will be?
I'm so frustrated with PA unemployment right now! I got notified that I needed to schedule a RESEA appointment (job search workshop thing). When I first tried scheduling on the CareerLink portal, it gave me this ridiculous error saying "no RESEA appointments available for this office at this time" - like what am I supposed to do with that?? I called the CareerLink office and some lady told me to "just keep checking back" for open slots. Finally got one scheduled the very next day when some slots magically appeared. Fast forward to today when I tried filing my weekly certification, and boom - the system says I have an "open issue" on my claim because I supposedly didn't schedule my RESEA appointment! But I DID schedule it as soon as appointments were available! Now they're saying my claim is "under review" and my payments are on hold. Does anyone know if this will be a quick fix or am I looking at weeks/months without benefits? I've got a mortgage payment due next week and rent isn't an option. Will they only hold this week's payment or ALL my future payments until someone bothers to look at my claim? I'm getting anxiety just thinking about how long this might take...

This happened to me back in February. The system automatically flags your account when there's a gap between when you were supposed to schedule the RESEA and when you actually did it. In my case, they held my benefits for 3 weeks before resolving it. You need to upload documentation showing that there weren't any available appointments when you first tried. Screenshots of the error message are perfect if you have them. If not, you'll need to call and explain the situation. The most important thing: keep filing your weekly claims even though you won't get paid right away. Once they resolve the issue, they'll release all the held payments at once.

•Oh no, 3 WEEKS?! I didn't take any screenshots because who thinks they need to document every step of using a government website? That's so unfair. Will definitely keep filing though, thanks for that tip at least.

•2 payments?? That's going to destroy me financially. Did you have to do anything special to get it fixed or did they eventually just figure it out on their own?

I work as an employment counselor, and this is unfortunately a common issue with the RESEA program. Here's what you need to know: 1. The system automatically flags accounts when RESEA appointments aren't scheduled within the required timeframe, regardless of whether appointments were available or not. 2. This is considered an "open issue" and typically takes 10-14 business days to resolve if you don't take action. 3. You have three options to expedite this: - Call PA UC directly (though this is extremely difficult) - Visit your local CareerLink office in person with documentation - Upload a statement to your dashboard explaining the situation 4. Continue filing your weekly claims! This is critical. Once resolved, you'll receive all back payments. 5. The system won't differentiate between "no appointments available" and "claimant didn't try" unless you provide evidence or explanation. The RESEA program is mandatory for continuing benefits, but the system doesn't account for technical limitations very well.

•Thank you for this detailed explanation! I'm going to try uploading a statement today. Do you happen to know exactly where in the dashboard I should upload this? The site is so confusing.

•You'll want to go to the "Dashboard" section, then look for "Upload Documents" or sometimes it's under "Provide Additional Information." Select document type as "Correspondence" or "Statement" if available. If you can't find it, sometimes it's hidden under the specific issue details page. Make sure to include your claim number and contact information in the statement.

Similar issue last year but with work search activities. Filed my weekly claim and somehow the system thought I didn't do my work searches even though I entered them all correctly. Ended up waiting 6 weeks for resolution! PA unemployment is terrible with these technical glitches. They punish us for their broken system.

•6 weeks!! I couldn't survive that long without benefits. This whole system seems designed to make people give up.

•Yeah it was brutal. Had to borrow money from family. Hope OP has better luck than I did.

Have you tried using Claimyr to reach a PA UC agent directly? After dealing with a similar issue and not being able to get through on the regular unemployment line for days, I discovered this service at claimyr.com that got me connected to an actual human at PA unemployment in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 The agent I spoke with was able to see the notes on my account and remove the RESEA flag right away once I explained that there weren't any appointments available when I first tried. My payments started processing the next day. Worth considering if you're in a financial pinch and can't wait for them to review it on their timeline.

•I've never heard of this service before. Does it actually work? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

•It worked for me! The service basically navigates the phone system for you and holds your place in line. When they reach an agent, you get connected. Saved me hours of redial frustration. The video demo shows exactly how it works.

i dont think anyone here knows what theyre talking about. resea appointments are optional and they cant hold your benefits for not attending. i had one scheduled last month and completely forgot about it, missed it entirely and still got all my money. maybe your issue is something else entirely?

•This is incorrect information. RESEA (Reemployment Services and Eligibility Assessment) appointments are mandatory for claimants who are selected to participate. It's not optional. You may have been lucky that your case wasn't flagged, but the program requirements are clear - selected claimants must participate or risk benefit interruption. Please be careful about sharing information that could negatively impact others.

•whatever man. i literally just went thru this and had no problems. just saying maybe OP should check if there's other issues on their claim instead of assuming it's the resea thing.

•@Connor O'Brien you aren’t right nor are you wrong. Only time it is “optional” is if you are only laid off with a call back date. Everything after that is mandatory. Beg to differ? Bet me then

When this happened to me a couple months ago, I went directly to my local CareerLink office in person. Explained the situation to a staff member, and they were able to call someone at UC from their office to explain. Got it resolved in 3 days. Sometimes face-to-face is the only way to cut through the bureaucracy. Bring any documentation you have about trying to schedule the appointment initially.

•That's actually brilliant! There's a CareerLink about 20 minutes from my house. I'll try going there tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion!

the whole pa unemployment system is rigged to deny benefits. they make it IMPOSSIBLE to follow all their stupid rules then penalize us when their broken website doesn't work!!! i had to fight for 2 months last year for similar issue and almost got evicted waiting for money i EARNED. complete nightmare honestly.

UPDATE: I wanted to thank everyone for their advice! I ended up going to my local CareerLink office in person as suggested, and the woman there was amazing. She called someone at UC directly and explained the situation. They were able to see in their system that I had tried to schedule before appointments were available. The hold was removed from my account today and my payment is now listed as "in progress"! Should get my money in 2-3 business days they said. For anyone else facing this issue, definitely try the in-person CareerLink route if possible!

•So glad this worked out for you! Always good to hear a success story with PA UC, they're rare enough lol

•This is excellent news! Thanks for updating us. And you've highlighted a great approach for others - CareerLink staff often have direct channels to UC that aren't available to the general public. Glad it was resolved quickly for you.

Wow, what a relief to read your update! This is such a perfect example of how broken the PA UC system is - they create these impossible situations and then act like it's our fault when we can't navigate their buggy website. I'm dealing with a similar issue right now (not RESEA related, but another "system glitch" that's holding up my benefits) and I'm definitely going to try the CareerLink office approach. It's ridiculous that we have to jump through all these hoops just to get benefits we're entitled to, but at least there's a path forward. Thanks for sharing your success story - gives the rest of us hope!

•Exactly! It's so frustrating that we have to become experts in navigating their broken system just to get what we're owed. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the CareerLink approach works for you too. It really shouldn't be this hard - if their website can't handle appointment scheduling properly, they shouldn't be penalizing people for it. Hope you get your issue resolved quickly!

•Good luck with your issue! The CareerLink route really does seem to be the secret weapon here. I was skeptical at first but the staff member I worked with was so knowledgeable and actually seemed to care about helping people navigate this mess. It's crazy that going in person is more effective than using their "official" online system, but hey, whatever works right? Hope you get your benefits sorted out soon - this whole experience has shown me that persistence and finding the right person to talk to makes all the difference.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this - the same exact thing happened to me about 6 months ago! The RESEA scheduling system is absolutely terrible. I kept getting that "no appointments available" message for almost a week, then when I finally got one scheduled, they flagged my account anyway. What worked for me was calling the CareerLink office directly (not the UC number) and asking them to document in their system that I had attempted to schedule multiple times before appointments became available. The CareerLink staff member I spoke with said this happens ALL the time and they're used to helping people with this specific issue. She was able to send a note to UC on my behalf explaining the technical difficulties. It still took about 10 days to get resolved, but I did get all my back pay once they cleared the flag. Definitely keep filing your weekly claims like others have said - that's super important! And if you can get to a CareerLink office in person like some others suggested, that seems to work even better than phone calls. This whole system is such a mess. Hang in there!

•Thanks for sharing your experience! It's both reassuring and infuriating to know this is such a common issue. 10 days still feels like forever when you're waiting for benefits, but at least you got your back pay eventually. I'm definitely going to try calling the CareerLink office directly - I didn't even think about contacting them instead of UC directly. It's wild that they're so used to this problem that they have a standard process for it. Really shows how broken the system is when the workaround becomes routine! Appreciate the encouragement too, this whole situation has been such a stress nightmare.

This exact same thing happened to me last month! The RESEA scheduling system is completely broken - I spent 3 days getting that "no appointments available" error before any slots showed up. Then when I finally got scheduled, boom, they put a hold on my benefits anyway. I ended up calling my local CareerLink office (not the UC number) and explaining the situation. The staff there said they see this all the time and were able to contact UC directly to explain that their own system was having technical issues. It took about a week to get resolved, but I got all my back payments. The most frustrating part is that this is clearly a known issue with their website, but they still automatically flag accounts instead of fixing the underlying problem. Keep filing your weekly claims no matter what - you'll get those payments once they clear the flag. And definitely try the CareerLink office approach if calling UC directly doesn't work!
