One other bit of advice - if your initial claim gets approved and you start receiving benefits, set aside some money if possible. About 1 in 5 people I know got hit with an overpayment notice months later (sometimes for the entire claim amount). The system sometimes approves claims and then later determines you weren't eligible. If that happens, file an appeal immediately - you only have 15 days from the date on the determination letter.
Thank you all for the information and advice. I'm feeling a bit better prepared now, though still nervous. Going to start my job search activities tomorrow and will definitely keep detailed records. I'll also try calling first thing in the morning to check on my claim status. If that doesn't work, might look into that Claimyr service if things start dragging on too long. Really appreciate everyone sharing your experiences!
The EXACT same thing happened to me last month! Payment date was Tuesday but didn't hit my account till Thursday!! I called PA UC like 50 times and couldn't get through to ask about it. Then I found this service called Claimyr that got me through to an agent in like 20 minutes. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 showing how it works. The agent told me payments can take up to 3 business days depending on your bank even though the dashboard shows it as paid. Saved me so much stress knowing it wasn't lost! Their website is claimyr.com if you need to talk to someone about your payment.
@questioning_it - It's actually legit. I was suspicious too but they just help you bypass the phone queue. Was worth it when I had an urgent issue that needed fixing before my benefit year ended.
Thanks everyone! My payment just hit my account this morning, so it took exactly one business day after the payment date. I'll definitely remember that Claimyr service if I run into problems later though.
try calling ur state rep!!!!! they helped my cousin when his money was stuck for like 2 weeks. sometimes they can push it through faster
This is actually good advice. State representatives' offices often have dedicated staff who can escalate unemployment issues. Their constituent services can sometimes get results when normal channels fail. Just make sure you have your claim ID number and all relevant dates ready when you contact them.
UPDATE: Just checked my card at 6am and the money FINALLY showed up!!! 😅 That's 5 days total after filing my claim and 3 days after getting the "payment processed" email. No explanation, no pending transaction, it just appeared. Guess I'll need to adjust my bill payment schedule going forward to account for these delays. Thanks everyone for the advice and commiseration!
I work as an employment counselor and see this all the time with my clients. The appeals backlog is unfortunately at historical highs in PA. The separation determination appeals are particularly backed up because they require more investigation and witness testimony. One thing to note - if you win your appeal, you'll receive all back payments from the eligible weeks, so you won't lose that money permanently. However, I understand that doesn't help your immediate financial situation. In addition to contacting your state representative (which is the most effective approach), also try reaching out to the UC Board of Review directly at 717-787-5122. Sometimes they can give you information about where your case is in the queue that the regular service center staff can't see.
Thank you for the insight. It's somewhat reassuring to know I'm not alone in this situation, though it's terrible so many people are struggling with the same issue. I'll try the Board of Review number too. Do you know if there's any way to request an expedited hearing due to financial hardship?
Yes, you can request expedited processing due to financial hardship. When you call the Board of Review, specifically mention that you're facing imminent foreclosure and ask if your case can be expedited. They don't advertise this option, but they do have a process for it. You'll likely need to provide some documentation of your housing situation, such as foreclosure notices. Also, when you contact your state representative, make sure to emphasize the housing emergency - that often gets faster results.
Just checking back - any updates after trying some of these suggestions? Did you get through to anyone?
Yes! I've made some progress. I contacted my state rep yesterday and they were super helpful. They already submitted an inquiry to UC on my behalf. I also got through to the Board of Review using that direct number, and they confirmed my appeal is in their system but hasn't been assigned to a referee yet. They took down my hardship information and said they'd flag my case for expedited review. I also applied for the emergency housing assistance program. Still no hearing date yet, but at least things are moving now and I don't feel completely helpless. Thank you all for the advice!

•You should file immediately regardless of severance, but yes, there may be a period where you don't receive benefits based on your severance amount. It's calculated using a formula: total severance ÷ your full-time weekly wage = weeks of benefits deferred. However, you must still file weekly claims during this period to remain eligible when the deduction period ends.

Update: I filed my claim yesterday selecting "Lack of Work" as the reason, and it went through without any weird questions about disciplinary issues! I reported my severance as a lump sum payment and noted it covers 6 weeks. The system calculated my weekly benefit rate at $600 and said I'd have approximately a 14-week deduction period before payments would begin. Thank you all for the guidance - you saved me from making mistakes that might have delayed my claim. I'll keep filing weekly claims and documenting my job search activities in the meantime. This process is definitely not intuitive, so I appreciate the help!

•Great news! Glad it went smoothly. Remember to file your weekly certifications on time every week even during that deduction period. Set a reminder on your phone - if you miss a week, it can cause all kinds of headaches.
