Can PA CareerLink help with open issues on my UC claim or do I need an examiner?

I've been stuck with two open issues on my PA unemployment claim for almost 3 weeks now. My bills are starting to pile up and I'm getting really worried. I have an appointment at CareerLink tomorrow morning to discuss job search resources, but I'm wondering if they might be able to help resolve these open issues while I'm there? Or are CareerLink staff completely separate from UC examiners? I tried calling the UC service center like 50 times but can't get through. Anyone know if the CareerLink staff can actually see or fix issues on your claim or am I wasting my time asking them about it?

They are totally diff departments. CareerLink helps w/ job search but they CANT fix claim issues. Only UC examiners can do that. Sorry!

Ugh that's what I was afraid of. Do you know how long it typically takes for an examiner to look at open issues? The website just says to wait but doesn't give any timeframe.

CareerLink staff and UC examiners are completely separate entities. While CareerLink focuses on employment services like resume help, job referrals, and training programs, they don't have access to your UC claim system to resolve issues. Open issues need to be addressed by actual UC claim examiners who have the authority to make determinations on your claim. That said, it's not a complete waste to mention your situation while at CareerLink. Sometimes the staff there can provide general guidance on who to contact or give you updated information on UC processing times. Just don't expect them to be able to directly resolve your claim issues.

Thank you for explaining that so clearly. At least I know what to expect now. I'll still ask them if they have any suggestions on getting through to an examiner faster.

I went through something similar last month with THREE open issues!!! The waiting is AWFUL and nobody gives you straight answers about how long it'll take. CareerLink couldn't do ANYTHING for me about my claim issues. They just kept saying "we don't handle that" and told me to keep calling UC. After 5 weeks an examiner finally fixed my issues and I got backpay but those 5 weeks were HELL!!!! The system is BROKEN!!!!

5 weeks?! I can't wait that long! Did you try emailing them or reaching out to your state rep? I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to speed up the process.

Having been in this situation before, I can tell you that CareerLink staff absolutely cannot access or modify your UC claim. They're a separate department entirely focused on employment services. Here's what you can actually do about your open issues: 1. Continue filing your weekly claims while waiting - this ensures you'll get backpay once issues are resolved 2. Document everything related to your claim in case you need it for an appeal 3. Check your UC dashboard and correspondence section for any notices requiring response 4. If your issue is urgent (like facing eviction), contact your state representative's office - they can sometimes expedite claims The current average wait time for examiner review is 3-6 weeks depending on claim complexity. Unfortunately, calling multiple times doesn't move you up in the queue - examiners work through cases in relative order with some prioritization for hardship cases.

Thank you for this detailed response. I've been filing my weekly claims, so at least I'm doing something right. I'll definitely reach out to my state rep's office since I'm going to struggle to make rent if this drags on much longer.

I was in exactly your situation last month! Two open issues and couldn't get through to anyone on the phone. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to connect with an actual UC agent after trying for weeks on my own. Took about 20 minutes to get connected instead of endless busy signals. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 The agent was able to see exactly what my open issues were and told me one was just waiting for employer verification and the other needed additional documents from me. Saved me potentially weeks of waiting! CareerLink definitely can't help with claim issues - they're completely separate systems.

Does this actually work??? I've never heard of this before! Is it safe? I'm so desperate to talk to someone about my claim!

Yes, it worked for me! They just connect you to the actual UC phone line - you're still talking directly to real PA UC reps. The service just helps you bypass the busy signals. The UC agent I spoke with walked me through exactly what was causing my issues and what I needed to do.

ask them anyway while ur there. sometimes they kno people or have inside tips they cant say officially. worth a shot

Some additional context on open issues that might help you understand what's happening: Open issues are flagged items on your claim that need an examiner's review. Common ones include: - Employer contests about your separation reason - Questions about your ability/availability for work - Earnings verification issues - Identity verification problems - Work search compliance questions Depending on which type of issues you have, resolution times can vary. For example, identity verification issues are typically resolved faster than complex separation disputes with employers. While waiting, make sure you have access to your PA UC dashboard and check for any correspondence or action items. Sometimes the system requires you to upload documents or respond to questions, and if you miss these requests, it can further delay your claim.

This is helpful, thank you. One of my issues seems to be about my availability for work (I mentioned a doctor's appointment during my initial application) and the other might be earnings verification since they sent me an employment history form. I completed both forms they sent me last week, so hopefully that helps move things along.

When I had an open issue last year I contacted my state representative and they helped speed things up! Maybe try that?

Thanks for the suggestion! Do I just call their office? Did they ask for any specific information about your claim?

Yes just call their local office (not Harrisburg). They had me fill out a form authorizing them to inquire about my claim, and I needed to provide my claim number and contact info. They reached out to UC on my behalf and things moved much faster after that!

The PA UC system is COMPLETELY BROKEN!!! I've had open issues for 2 MONTHS with no resolution!!! They expect us to survive on NOTHING while they take their sweet time!!! And yes CareerLink is USELESS for UC issues - they'll just tell you to keep waiting which is RIDICULOUS!!!

Just to follow up on the work availability issue you mentioned - that's actually one of the more straightforward issues for examiners to resolve. Since you've already submitted the requested forms, that's good. Here are a few tips to potentially speed things up: 1. Make sure you're answering 'yes' to being able and available for work on your weekly certifications (unless that would be untrue) 2. If you have any documentation from your doctor stating your appointment was just routine or doesn't affect your ability to work, have that ready 3. If you don't hear anything within another week, try sending a message through your UC portal specifically addressing the availability issue. Sometimes this can bring attention to your claim Generally, with straightforward issues like this and complete documentation already submitted, you should be looking at resolution within the next 1-2 weeks rather than the longer 5-6 week timeframe for more complex issues.

Thank you so much for this information! The doctor's appointment was just a regular checkup, so it shouldn't affect my availability. I'll definitely send a message through the portal as you suggested. Really appreciate your help!
