PA UC open issues: Does contacting state rep again help speed up examiner review?
I've been waiting for almost 8 weeks now for my PA unemployment claim to be reviewed by an examiner. There's an 'open issue' that's preventing payments. I contacted my state representative about 3 weeks ago and they did reach out to UC on my behalf. The very next morning, I got a call from unemployment saying my case 'is in line to be reviewed by an examiner' and there's literally nothing they can do to speed it up. I'm getting desperate - rent is due next week and I've exhausted my savings. Has anyone had success contacting their state rep a SECOND time for the same issue? Did it actually help move things along? Or am I just wasting everyone's time? The UC agent seemed pretty firm that nothing could be done, but I'm wondering if that's really true or if reaching out to my rep again might put some pressure on them.

•That's encouraging! Did you contact the same rep's office both times? I'm wondering if I should call or email them this time around.

It's absolutely worth contacting your state representative again. The UC representatives who answer calls typically don't have authority to expedite claims - they're just reading what's on their screen. State representatives, however, have specific contacts at higher levels of the UC department who can flag claims for priority review. When you contact them again, include: - Your previous case reference number - The exact date UC called you - Your current financial hardship (potential eviction, utility shutoffs, etc.) - The exact number of weeks you've been waiting I've seen claims that were "stuck in line" for months suddenly get resolved within days after a second or third contact with a state representative.

•This! I was told the exact same thing by UC that "nothing could be done" but my rep's office got it fixed in 10 days after contacting them a second time. The system is broken.

I'm in the SAME boat!!! Been waiting for 10 weeks with an "open issue" and rent is past due and landlord is threatening eviction!!! So stressed! I contacted my state rep 4 weeks ago and nothing happened except a generic email saying they "submitted an inquiry." Should I try again or try a different rep? Does anyone know if contacting the Governor's office helps??

•Before trying the Governor's office, definitely contact your state rep again. Be persistent but polite, and follow up every 3-4 days. When I worked these cases, the squeaky wheel definitely got the grease. Make sure you're dealing with the same staff person each time so they recognize your case. The Governor's office will just redirect you back to your rep.

•That's exactly what I'm afraid of! I might have to take any job I can find just to pay rent, but I really need the back pay too for all the bills that are piling up!

Have you tried using Claimyr to get through to an actual claims examiner? I was in the same situation for 9 weeks with an "open issue" and couldn't get past the regular service reps when calling. I found this service at claimyr.com that got me connected to PA UC in about 20 minutes instead of spending days trying to get through. The agent I finally spoke with was able to escalate my case to a supervisor who resolved my open issue on the spot. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 Might be worth trying before going back to your state rep, since sometimes talking directly to the right person at UC is faster than the rep route.

•Thanks for the suggestion. I've been calling UC daily with no luck - just busy signals or getting disconnected after waiting on hold forever. I'll check out that video. Did you actually get to talk to an examiner or just a regular UC rep?

•Started with a regular rep, but because I had specific details about my claim and mentioned I'd been waiting 9+ weeks, they transferred me to someone who could actually help. The key was actually getting through in the first place!

As someone who previously worked with a state rep's office on UC cases, I can tell you that contacting them again is definitely worthwhile. Here's why: 1. UC staff often say "nothing can be done" because for THEM, nothing can be done. They don't have the authority. 2. State reps have special channels to higher-level UC management. 3. Cases that receive multiple inquiries from a rep's office tend to get flagged for priority review. 4. The current backlog for examiner review is approximately 6-10 weeks, so you're in that window where a push might help. I'd suggest contacting them again, explaining that you've now been waiting 8 weeks total (3 weeks since their initial help), and emphasize any financial hardship you're experiencing. Be specific about consequences you're facing without this money.

•This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I'll definitely reach out to my rep again tomorrow morning. Should I ask to speak with the same staff person who helped me last time?

•Absolutely! Ask for the same staff person. They'll already be familiar with your case and might take it personally that UC hasn't resolved it yet after their intervention. Makes it much more likely they'll put extra effort into pushing it through.

I contacted my state rep three times for the same issue! First time took 3 weeks with no result, second time took 2 weeks with no result, third time I got a different person at the rep's office who seemed to actually care and my claim was fixed in 4 days! I think it depends on WHO at the rep's office is handling your case.

One important thing to note: When you contact your state rep again, make sure to mention that you've been waiting 8 weeks TOTAL, not just the time since their intervention. The PA UC department has internal guidelines that cases over 8 weeks old should receive priority review. Your state rep can highlight this fact when they inquire. Also, if you have any scheduled bill due dates or financial deadlines approaching, include those specific dates. Having concrete deadlines helps your rep emphasize the urgency of your situation.

•That's a great point about the 8-week threshold. I didn't know about that internal guideline. I'll definitely mention that and the fact that my rent is due on the 1st when I contact them.
