Will ny unemployment pay me for my final week if it ends on my last day?
So my unemployment benefits are scheduled to end on November 18th, which also happens to be my last day at my job. I'm wondering if I'll still get paid for this final week? I've been on unemployment since May after my tech startup downsized. My benefit amount is $504 weekly, and I've been certifying regularly every Sunday without issues. Just when I thought I was about to run out completely, I got this job that starts next month. So there's this weird timing where my benefits technically expire on the exact same day as my last certification period. Anyone know if the system will still process my final payment? I'm counting on that money to get me through until my first paycheck at the new job.

Yes you should still receive payment for the final week as long as you certify on time. The system pays for completed weeks, so if your benefits end on the last day of your certification week, you get paid for the entire week. Just make sure to certify for that week on Sunday!

Thank you! That's a relief. So I should just certify on Sunday like normal even though technically my benefits end on the day before?

Exactly! The certification is for the previous week, so you're good. I was in the exact same situation back in September.

After spending 3 weeks trying to reach someone at NY unemployment about a similar issue, I finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got a callback with an actual agent! Talking to an agent got my issue resolved in minutes when I'd been trying for weeks. Seriously was the only way I could talk to a live agent. Check out this video too: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

100% real. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for weeks. Got connected to an agent in like 45 mins when I had been trying by myself for days with no luck.

They just set up the call and connect you. You talk directly with the unemployment agent yourself, so you only share your info with the actual govt rep, not with the service.

I think as long as you certify for the week before your benefits run out (so certify for 11/12-11/18) you should get paid. I had the same thing happen and I got my last payment no problem.

Here's the full answer from someone who just went through this exact scenario last month: Yes, you will receive payment for your final week as long as you properly certify. The unemployment system treats a benefit year ending date as the LAST day you're eligible, not the day after your eligibility ends. So if your benefit year ends on November 18th, that entire week (ending on the 18th) is covered. Here's what you need to do: - Certify on Sunday (November 19th) for the previous week as normal - Make sure to answer all questions accurately - If you have any issues with the certification, contact them immediately If for some reason the online system gives you trouble with certifying after your benefit year ends (which sometimes happens), you'll need to speak with an agent. In my case, I had to call multiple times before getting through. Many people here recommend claimyr.com as a way to get connected to an agent without the endless hold times. Also, make sure you're planning for the gap between your last unemployment payment and your first paycheck at the new job. That transition period can be financially challenging.

This is incredibly helpful info, thank you! Do you know if there's any grace period for certifying if I somehow miss the Sunday window?

Yes! You actually have until Saturday of the following week to certify. So you'd have until 11/25 to claim for the week ending 11/18. But I strongly recommend doing it on Sunday to avoid any delays in payment.

Bruh the NY unemployment system is such a joke. They'll find any excuse to not pay you that final week. Make sure you screenshot EVERYTHING and document all your certifications. I got screwed out of my last payment because "the system didn't process it correctly" 🤡

I had the opposite experience actually. They were super helpful when I called about my last payment. Maybe I just got lucky with a good agent?

You definitely got lucky. I had to call like 50 times to even get through to a human.

In my experience, if the system lets you certify, you'll get paid. Since your benefits END on the 18th (not the 17th), that whole week should be covered. The NYSDOL website says: "You can claim benefits for a week of unemployment after that week has ended." So you'll certify on or after the 19th for the week ending the 18th.

what if you miss the certification day tho? can you backdate it for that final week if you forget?

Yeah you can certify late for up to 7 days after the normal Sunday. Go to the website and there's an option for claiming weekly benefits for a missed week.

The NY unemployment website is literally the worst designed piece of garbage on the internet. It's like they intentionally make it confusing. But to answer your question: YES you should get paid for that final week.

Congrats on the new job! Must be a relief. And yes, you'll get that final week's payment. I just went through the exact same thing in October.

Quick tip: set a calendar reminder to certify on that final Sunday. I missed mine and had to jump through so many hoops to get that last payment. The system doesn't always send the usual reminder for the last week.

That's a good idea, I'll definitely set a reminder. Thanks!

If you have ANY issues with that final payment, don't waste time with emails. You need to actually speak to someone. I had to use claimyr.com to get through after trying for days on my own. Worth every penny to get my final payment released.

Does anyone know if this applies to extended benefits too? My regular UI ends soon but I think I qualify for the extension.

Extensions work a bit differently. You need to apply for those separately, they don't automatically continue. Check your inbox on the NY unemployment site for notices.

When I was in this situation I got my final payment no problem. Just make sure all your weekly certifications are done properly with no mistakes. The system treats the end date as inclusive, meaning you get paid for that full last day/week.
