Will my ny unemployment rate stay the same with only a few effective days left?
My unemployment benefits are expiring in May 2023. I've been checking my account and I only have like 6 effective days remaining. I'm wondering if I'll still get the same weekly amount for these last few days or if they prorate it somehow? Not sure how this works when you're at the very end of your benefit year. Anyone gone through this before and know what to expect for the final payment? Really need to budget accurately since I'm still looking for work.

Yeah when you're down to your last few days they pay you for exactly those days at your regular daily rate. So if your weekly benefit amount is $504 and you have 3 days left, you'll get $252 for those 3 days (half your weekly amount). They don't suddenly change your rate just because you're at the end.

•Thanks for letting me know! So basically just divide my weekly rate by the number of days? That makes sense actually.

I was stuck in the same situation a few months back and couldn't get a clear answer online. I ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that connected me to an actual unemployment agent within like 20 mins. Saved me from so much stress since I kept getting different answers from friends. Agent confirmed exactly what I needed to know and talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast. There's also this helpful video: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•yeah right, another 'miracle solution'... what's the catch? 🙄

•no catch, it's just a service that calls NYSDOL for you and stays on hold so you don't have to. when an agent picks up, they connect you. beats spending 4 hours on hold yourself

•So I was about to throw my phone after 3 hours on hold when I saw this. Just tried it and got a call back in like 45 mins. Thx for sharing this!

This literally happened to me about 2 months ago. Yes, you'll get your normal daily rate (which is your weekly benefit amount ÷ 4). So for those 6 effective days you'll get 1.5x your usual weekly amount since 6 days = 1.5 weeks.

I believe you can still file for those days and get your benefit rate. Maybe another extension will go through? But tbh the whole ui system is broken af. I'm in the same boat but my BYE is June. Your best bet is to call and get specifics for your situation frm an agent. Good luck!!

Here's exactly how NY unemployment calculates your final payments when you have a partial week left: Your weekly benefit amount gets divided by 4 (since there are 4 effective days in a full UI week). So if your weekly benefit is $400, each effective day is worth $100. For your remaining 6 days, you'll get $600 (6 × $100) split across two payments. First week gets 4 days ($400), then final week gets 2 days ($200). The system won't change your rate just because you're at the end. What you SHOULD do now: 1. Make sure you keep certifying each week until all days are used 2. Start applying for jobs like crazy if you haven't found something yet 3. If you're confused about anything, call NYSDOL directly - but good luck getting through their phone system I had serious issues understanding my benefits and couldn't get any answers online. I used claimyr.com after trying to call for 3 weeks straight with no luck. They got me connected to a live agent who explained everything and fixed an issue that was holding up my last payments.

•This is super detailed - exactly what I needed! Thank you for breaking it down so clearly. Will definitely keep certifying until the days are used up.

•I was skeptical too but had tried calling for 3 straight weeks with no luck. Figured I had nothing to lose at that point and it actually worked. Your call tho!

u need to call them directly and ask. the website is useless for specifics like this. ive spent WEEKS trying to get someone on the line

•Check out claimyr.com - they call for you and connect when an agent answers. Only way I could get through last month.

just a heads up - make sure your address and direct deposit info are all correct in the system before your claim ends. my buddy had issues getting his final payment cuz they tried sending it to an old bank acct

I just went through this last week! Filed for my last 5 days and got paid exactly what i expected (my weekly rate x 5/4). The system is actually smart enuff to handle partial weeks correctly lol. Probably the only thing nysdol gets right tbh

You should look into filing a new claim after your benefit year ends. Depending on your work history during the past year, you might qualify for another round of benefits.

•I did work for about 3 months last summer before getting laid off again. Worth a shot I guess?

•Definitely worth applying! You need to have worked in at least 2 quarters and earned a minimum amount. The system will tell you if you qualify.

Fun fact: NY is one of the only states that uses the "effective days" system instead of weeks. Most other states just pay you for whole weeks. Makes things confusing AF when your claim is ending.

•Wait really? That's so weird. What's even the point of doing it that way?

•No idea, probably some ancient policy that nobody bothered to update. NY unemployment system still runs on COBOL programming from the 1970s lol
