PA UC benefit year ending on 11th - can I still file for final week?
Hey everyone, I'm kinda freaking out here! My benefit year with PA unemployment ends this Saturday (the 11th). Does anyone know if I'm still allowed to file for this final week? Or does the system just shut me off completely once the benefit year expires? I still have some $ left in my balance and really need that last payment. Would hate to lose out on it because of some stupid technicality with the system. Appreciate any help!

•Seriously? That's a huge relief! So I can definitely file for this week even though my benefit year ends on Saturday?

The previous response isn't completely accurate. You CAN file for the week that includes your benefit year ending date (the 11th), but you need to be aware that your claim for that week might be partially paid depending on your specific situation. The system calculates based on your actual benefit year, so if your benefit year ends mid-week, you might only receive partial payment for the days prior to expiration. Make sure you file that last weekly certification as soon as the system allows you to (usually Sunday after the week ends). If you're eligible for a new benefit year, you should file a new application immediately after your current benefit year ends.

•Ok that makes me nervous again. My benefit year ends Saturday (the 11th), so does that mean I'll only get paid for Saturday and not the rest of the week? I thought unemployment weeks ran Sunday-Saturday?

Don't worry - you're correct that the UC week runs Sunday-Saturday. Since your benefit year ends on Saturday the 11th, you're still within your benefit year for the entire week. You'll be able to claim for the full week ending on the 11th. What the previous poster mentioned applies to people whose benefit year ends mid-week (like on a Wednesday). In your case, since it ends exactly on Saturday, you'll get the full week's payment assuming you meet all other eligibility requirements. Just be sure to file for that week when the system allows (usually Sunday after the week ends) and then file a new initial application if you need to continue receiving benefits beyond your benefit year end date.

•This happened to me last year and I got so confused because I thought I couldn't file anymore!!! But yes, since PA UC weeks are Sunday-Saturday, your entire final week is covered as long as you file it on time. Don't miss that filing window or they won't pay you!!!!!

•I've been trying to call the PA UC office for THREE DAYS about a similar issue and it's absolutely impossible to get through. Every time I call, I get a busy signal or it hangs up after telling me they're experiencing high call volume. The system is BROKEN. I finally found a service called Claimyr that got me through to an agent in about 20 minutes. It basically keeps dialing for you until it gets through. Saved me hours of frustration. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 Their website is claimyr.com if anyone else is struggling to reach someone at unemployment. Worth checking out.

dont listen to these ppl saying u need to call!!! the system lets u file for any week that STARTS during ur benefit year. so if ur ben year ends sat the 11th, that whole week (starting sunday the 5th) is covered. but u DEFINITELY need to file a new claim right after if u still need benefits!!! dont wait even one day or ull have a gap!!!

•Thank you all for the help! I'm definitely going to file that last week as soon as the system lets me on Sunday. And I'll submit a new application right away too since I'll still need benefits. Hopefully the transition will be smooth!

One more important point to remember - when you file your new application, there will likely be a "waiting week" where you won't receive benefits. This is standard for most new benefit years (unless there's some emergency extension in place). So be prepared financially for a potential gap in payments during this transition period. Also, make sure all your work search activities are properly documented in your account. The system now requires you to record these activities directly in your PA UC dashboard, and they're being much stricter about enforcement in 2025.

•Ugh, I forgot about the waiting week. That's going to be tough financially, but at least I'm prepared now. I've been keeping up with my work search activities so that part should be fine. Thanks for the reminder!
