PA UC benefit year ended - how to open new claim when funds depleted?

So my PA unemployment benefits just ran out last week. I got that message saying my 'available credit is $0.00' when I tried to file my weekly claim. Been collecting for about 9 months now. Is this different from a benefit year ending? Do I have to file a whole new claim or is there some way to just extend the current one? I'm still looking for work but haven't had any luck. Getting really worried because I have bills coming due next week. Anyone know the right way to handle this without screwing anything up? The PA UC website is super confusing about this!

same thing happened 2 me. u have to file a whole new claim, not an extension. extensions were only during covid. go to the regular UC website and click "file an initial claim" just like ur doing it for the first time

Thanks for replying. So I just start over with a new application? Will I have to do the ID verification stuff again too? That was such a hassle last time with the IDme thing.

It depends on why your benefits ran out. Did you get a letter saying your benefit year ended? Or did you just use up all your funds? Two different things.

I'm not sure - the website just showed $0 balance. Is there a way to check if my benefit year ended vs just running out of money? I don't remember seeing a specific letter about it.

This is an important distinction. PA UC claims have two limits: a financial limit (the total amount you can receive) and a time limit (your benefit year). Check your dashboard or correspondence section on the UC website for a notice about your benefit year ending. If your benefit year ended (typically one year from when you first applied), you need to file a new initial claim. You'll need to report any work/wages during your previous benefit year. If you've just exhausted your financial entitlement but your benefit year is still active, you typically can't file a new claim until your benefit year ends, unless you've earned 6x your weekly benefit amount since filing your original claim. Log into your dashboard and check your claim status - it should tell you if your benefit year is active or expired.

The PA UC website is NEVER clear about this!!! I had the same problem last year and spent 3 WEEKS trying to figure it out. They should just TELL YOU exactly what to do instead of making us guess. I wasted so much time because they never explained the difference between benefit year ending and running out of money!!!

Sounds like you exhausted your benefits. When your benefit year ends, you'll get a specific notice about it. If you just ran out of money but your benefit year is still active, you might not be eligible for more unless your situation changed. Either way, you need to call them to get a clear answer. I spent 3 days trying to get through to PA UC last month when my benefits switched over. If you're having trouble getting through on the phone, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of fighting busy signals all day. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 - saved me a ton of frustration.

Thank you! I've been trying to call for two days with no luck. I'll check out that service - at this point I just need to talk to someone who can tell me exactly what to do. My rent is due next week and I'm getting really stressed about this.

Just to add some clarity, in Pennsylvania: 1. Your benefit year lasts 52 weeks from when you first applied 2. Your financial entitlement (total amount of benefits) is typically 26 weeks worth of payments 3. If you used continuous benefits, your money runs out around the 6-month mark while your benefit year is still active If you've earned at least 6x your weekly benefit amount since filing your initial claim, you may be eligible to file a new claim even if your benefit year hasn't ended. But you must call and speak with a representative to determine this - you can't self-assess this eligibility.

Update: I managed to get through to someone at UC this morning! Turns out my benefit year doesn't end for another 3 months, but I've used all my financial entitlement (like some of you explained). Since I haven't earned 6x my weekly benefit amount from working since my initial claim, I'm not eligible to file a new claim until my benefit year officially ends. The agent suggested I look into PA state assistance programs to bridge the gap. Just wanted to update in case anyone else runs into this situation. Thanks everyone for your help!

Thanks for updating us! That's exactly what I suspected. While you wait for your benefit year to end, definitely look into PA's Emergency Rental Assistance Program if you need help with housing costs, and SNAP benefits for food assistance. The PA COMPASS website (compass.state.pa.us) is where you can apply for these programs. Good luck!

so ur telling me we gotta wait till the whole year is up even if the money runs out early?? thats crazy i thought u could just file again right away

That's unfortunately how the PA UC system works. The only exception is if you return to work and earn at least 6x your weekly benefit amount, then lose that job through no fault of your own. In that case, you can file a new claim even if your benefit year hasn't ended. Otherwise, you have to wait until your benefit year expires before filing a new claim.
