Will my ny unemployment benefits run out before September 4th with a BYE date of 06/12/21?

My benefit year ending date is 06/12/21 and I'm currently on regular UI. I got laid off last June and have been collecting since then. I'm trying to figure out if my benefits will run out before the federal extension ends on September 4th. I have about $4,300 left in my balance right now. Does anyone know how to calculate this? I keep hearing different things about extensions and I'm confused about whether I'll need to reapply when my BYE comes up next month or if it automatically continues until September.

The BYE date is just when your claim year ends, not when your money runs out. If you have $4,300 left, divide that by your weekly benefit amount to see how many weeks you have left. If that takes you past September 4, then you won't get all of it because thats when the federal extensions end. And yes, you'll need to recertify when you hit your BYE date even if you still have money left.

Thanks! My weekly amount is $320 so I guess that means I have about 13 weeks left? That would take me past September so I won't get all of it. Do you know how the recertification process works?

0 coins

Yep, you got it right. For recertification, they'll make you fill out the whole application again, but it's usually faster the second time. Just make sure to do it right after your BYE date so there's no gap in payments.

Heads up - when you recertify they sometimes flag your account for review which can cause delays. Don't panic if that happens, it's normal but annoying af 🙄

I was in the same boat but was having trouble reaching anyone when my BYE date came up. I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual person at unemployment in less than 30 mins. Talking to an agent got my benefits sorted immediately instead of waiting weeks. Here's a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Does this actually work? I've been trying to get through to someone for 3 weeks now...

Yeah it worked for me! I was super skeptical at first but I was desperate after calling like 50 times a day for a week. They just call and wait on hold for you then connect you when they get someone. Saved me hours of frustration.

sounds too good to be true...the unemployment phone system is literally hell on earth

0 coins

I thought the same thing but it worked. They just automated the calling and hold process. You still talk to the same NYSDOL reps yourself when they connect you.

I used this too after seeing it mentioned here. Worth every penny not to spend my whole day redialing that stupid number.

It's so frustrating that none of the official NY unemployment info clearly explains this stuff. I spent hours on their website trying to figure out the same thing last month. For what its worth, my BYE date was in April, I reapplied, and my benefits continued without issue.

You should be fine till September. I'm in a similar situation and talking to an agent they told me that even after BYE date, with the extensions in place you'll keep getting paid as long as you reapply right away. The system is automatically extending most claims anyway.

This is NOT always true!! My sister didn't reapply right away and lost 3 weeks of benefits. The system is NOT automatic for everyone. Don't risk it!

Good point - I should've been more clear. Better safe than sorry, definately reapply on your BYE date just to be sure.

Nobody actually knows what's happening with the unemployment system 🤡 The rules seem to change weekly and different agents tell you different things. I literally had one agent tell me to reapply and another tell me NOT to reapply on the SAME DAY.

THIS!! The inconsistency is what makes me crazy. How are we supposed to follow the rules when nobody seems to know what they are?? 🤯

Listen up - I've been through this whole circus twice now. Here's exactly what happens with NY unemployment and BYE dates: 1. When you hit your BYE date, you MUST reapply even if you still have money in your account 2. If you're still unemployed for the same reason as your original claim, they'll usually just continue your existing claim 3. There might be a 1-2 week gap while they process it 4. The September 4 cutoff is real - no matter how much money is left in your account, federal benefits end then 5. Your benefit amount should stay the same as long as you didn't work enough during the year to establish a new claim If you have trouble reaching someone (and you probably will), I highly recommend using claimyr.com to get through to an agent. I was skeptical but it saved me weeks of frustration and my claim got fixed in one call. You should be fine with your balance, but don't wait until the last minute to deal with your BYE date.

This is super helpful, thank you! I've been so confused about the whole process and the website is useless. Did you have to provide any additional documentation when you reapplied?

0 coins

They might ask for some ID verification stuff depending on your situation. Have your employment history for the past 18 months ready, plus any separation paperwork if you have it. Most people get approved with minimal hassle if it's just a BYE date renewal.

lol nysdol really wants us to jump through hoops just to get what we're entitled to 🤦‍♀️ the whole system needs an overhaul

Just went thru this last month. Called for 2 weeks straight with no luck. My payments stopped completely after my BYE date even though I had a good chunk of money left. Eventually used claimyr.com to get through to someone and they fixed it in 10 minutes. Apparently there was a flag on my account that only an agent could remove.

Same thing happened to me! The website said everything was fine but the payments just stopped coming. Such a broken system.

0 coins

how much did that claimyr thing cost? worth it?

0 coins

It was worth every penny considering I was about to miss rent without my benefits. Got me paid within days after weeks of nothing.

Something nobody mentioned - if you worked AT ALL during your benefit year (even part time), it can complicate your reapplication. Make sure you report all work when you reapply or they might flag you for fraud later.

unpopular opinion: everyone needs to stop relying on unemployment and find a job. every restaurant and retail place is hiring rn

ok boomer 🙄 not everyone wants to risk getting covid for $12/hr with no benefits

Some of us have careers and specialized skills and don't want to throw that away for a minimum wage job. Unemployment exists for a reason.

I'm just saying the money's gonna run out in September anyway, might as well get ahead of it

Not everyone qualifies for those jobs. I have a disability and can't stand for 8 hours. My regular job accommodated that but these "available" jobs won't.

Check your payment history on the ny unemployment website. It tells you exactly how many effective days you have left. Each effective day is 1/4 of your weekly benefit. So 4 effective days = 1 week of benefits.

0 coins

Oh that's helpful! I've got 54 effective days left according to the website.

0 coins

So that's 13.5 weeks which would take you to mid-September, but since the programs end Sept 4, that's your cutoff date.

These unemployment questions are getting too complicated for reddit tbh. I'd call and ask a specialist. You'll need to talk to NYSDOL eventually for the BYE date stuff anyway.

Lol good luck calling them! 😂 Been trying for weeks to get through.

Try claimyr.com - worked for me when I couldn't get through for a month straight
